  1. Yeah, I knew what Doc meant, but the juxtaposition of the two, being only one letter away by name, but infinitely apart by way of talent, struck me as hard to conflate- and worth a throwaway bit of fun (hence the ). Regarding Dozier, yes, I'm thinking of teams around the league being inspired by the A's and going for it. As we've speculated since the offseason, the AL East had a chance to be wide open, and perhaps the Jays and Orioles want to take advantage of this opportunity. Which leaves the Twins....if they are as convinced as I am that 2015 only offers marginal improvement over these last 4 years, I would hope that they would consider any big-time offer involving Dozier in exchange for potential top-end SPs. 2015 can be the year to find out about Rosario, and possibly an evaluation of Polanco by the end of the year....but that doesn't have to mean that you're all-in with either. You can always look to a trade from your surplus talent (it would presumably be pitching after such a blockbuster trade) or in the FA market, neither of which the Twins considered seriously enough (feeble inquiries to Rajai Davis nothwithstanding) in a Plan B or Plan C scenario in the event that Hicks faltered (twice).
  2. Is there a contending team that wants Buxton enough to put him in CF- in 2014?
  3. You can never have enough pitching. The Twins traded their best CF assets to acquire potential starters just a season ago and we still haven't received any dividends from those acquisitions, with injuries, flame-outs, lag-times, the pipeline must continually be reloaded. An overabundance of quality SP depth allows for the best trading currency with which to fill holes. And there's nothing wrong by looking at signing proven, but relatively inexpensive, major leaguers like Ben Zobrist when they become available, finding FA 2nd basemen is far easier than finding SSs or SPs. And don't forget, Rosario is still in the mix for the job internally, as well as Polanco longer-term.
  4. You're probably correct on Dozier, but if the right offer came along from either the Jays or the Orioles (ie, Top 100 pitching), the Twins should consider it. They can always trade out of their accumulated pitching depth for, or sign, a top-flite 2nd baseman later.
  5. Another favorite potential trading partner of mine, chock full of pitching prospects, and with specific needs that match with the Twins potential trade subjects: Suzuki, Dozier and possibly Correia (KC's numbers, although admittedly smoke and mirrors, over June and July, are near as good as Baltimore's 3 best SPs and much better than the bottom 3- Ubaldo, Chen, Gonzalez). And if they want to dump Delmon, there's Willingham as a replacement.
  6. Dozier..Plouffe...Willingham
  7. And that is the key. With the A's bold move, the Orioles and Jays need to make a series of bold moves if they hope to keep up. The Twins need to be ready for a blockbuster counter-proposal (ie....include Suzuki with another impact player or two to get a shot at their high-end prospects) to both of these teams when they come a-calling.
  8. From MLB Traderumors: The Twins have potentially something to offer at each area of Blue Jays need. (I've mentioned Willingham in the past as of potential interest to Toronto). The Jays are in a position with the AL Eastern Division's usually strong teams being down this year, and are currently seeing their chances for claiming a pennant in 2014 fast slipping away. It sure seems like this would be a team that could quickly convince Ryan to unload some of his expiring contracts, and perhaps come up with an even better blockbuster-type deal- if the Jays are willing to empty their farm system. The Jays have 22 year old RHP Aaron Sanchez (ranked # 23) and 19 year old Roberto Osuna (ranked # 93, but coming off of TJ) who are Top 100 prospects, but currently in down years, but also with high upside projectability. A guy I really would like for the Twins to consider is 21-year old LHP, Daniel Norris. He actually outpitched Berrios in the FSL, and is 6'2", and like Berrios, just called up to AA.
  9. ...and the International League-leading K/9 of 10.4 and K% of 27%, along with ranking 5th in H/9 @ 7.55 are at least whispering "let me show you what I got, coach."
  10. Antony is on record (and I'm pretty sure Ryan in the past has, too) that there is magnitude of difference between competition at AAA vs. MLB. Thus, there's ultimately only one way to evaluate a player's true state of major-league readiness. Thus....It costs some service time to make a fully-informed decision. So be it.
  11. Absolutely. At close to 90 IP as of today, he only has 50-60 innings left for 2014, based on the restrictions that Antony, himself, imposed.
  12. Trevor May was placed on the Futures Game roster on June 25 (to replace Marco Gonzalez), a day or so after the official roster was announced. Based on all of the Twins moves in the last 2 weeks of June...it seems pretty clear that May wasn't going to get promoted until after the All Star break.
  13. The reason for holding him back definitely isn't the Futures Game, Meyer was the second choice for that spot, behind May (actually the third choice, behind the originally-chosen Cardinals pitcher who was promoted). The only recent encouragement to suggest a possible acceleration of this go-slow process is the fact that besides this being the 3rd straight effective outing, Meyer now is apparently allowed an expanded pitch count. But unfortunately, now sitting at nearly 90 innings, Meyer only has another 50-60 innings left- max. That's about 9 starts, which means a shut-down by around the end of the third week in August if he remains in a starting role. Perhaps there's a smidgen of hope that a roster spot is cleared for Meyer by a trade or two in the next week? Maybe, but I'll stand by my prediction in May that we don't see Meyer until June 2015.
  14. Brad Mills and George Kottaras would be good short-term pick-ups.
  15. Earlier in the season, Antony set a high bar to exceed and a wide gulf to cross, specifically for Meyer- his comments offered little hope that he would be called up any time soon- barring unforseen events, I posted at the time that it appeared the Twins would be fine if they held off on Meyer until some time in 2015- and now LEN3 seems to confirm that this may be the case. By contrast, for May, the Twins have not offered similar public rationales for why, or why not, he was yet to get the call. But again, actions on the part of the Twins should mean something. The Twins were quick to appoint May to the Futures Game squad when a spot became available (only a day after the initial rosters were set), and this came on the heels of the 120-pitch Trevor May effort on June 16. Before May sustained the injury, it seems likely that he was going to get the first shot at an open spot on the 25-man roster after the All Star break (presumably Correia). Presumably, his timetable has been set back slightly, but I still gotta think he's going to get a "tryout", either in one of Nolasco's starts or for Correia's, once KC is jettisoned.
  16. I literally laughed out loud, GCTF. (and thanks for the Chris Hermann tribute, two laughs from one post doesn't happen very often, and especially appreciated by me on such a dismal evening of baseball).
  17. I'm remaining my optimistic self and still fully expecting 72.
  18. Great post. The Miracle are still short-handed in the IF until Mejia and Michael return. And it only makes sense that Polanco would go back to his home base to cover that need and get his affairs in order. It's obvious from the way that the New Britain roster is constructed, that one SS, or even two, could be promoted in the next few weeks. On the Berrios front, Brett Lee returned to pitch tonight for Ft Myers, so Berrios is probably in position to move up soon, as well.
  19. He's hitting High A pitching, Bombo, pretty well. After I researched it (see above), it's even better than I imagined. It even looks like the numbers he's producing would work at 2nd Base, as well. FWIW, when I saw him play, it was at 2nd for Cedar Rapids, he looked very smooth in the field, and was crushing Low A pitching as a teenager, and I thought, besides Buxton, he was the guy in CR that looked the most like a future big leaguer, but not on a track faster than Buxton to the majors (but I'll defer to Jim Crikket for the final word on that type of analysis).
  20. What? This is not exactly true. Despite being 3 years below the average age for the Florida State League, among his peer group at SS, Polanco leads all SS in: OBP/SLG/OPS/wOBA/wRC+/BB%/BB*K/BB/SF/Runs scored/HR He's second for all SS for: AVG/Hits/RBI/ISO I'm not sure what more can be asked of a performance and a performer to be labeled as "dominating". Granted, there's work to be done in the field. There are 4 guys listed as SS at Fort Myers, while there are none listed at SS in New Britain. While Mejia and Michael are on the DL for the Miracle, I would expect that Polanco will earn a promotion when the MI depth issues are resolved. I would concur that, just as in the case with Santana, it's far more important that he be playing SS everyday, somewhere, than being juggled around the organization. And BTW, Polanco went 3 for 4 tonight with a BB and Double.
  21. I believe the word the Twins prefer is to "master" each level, either that is the requirement or they award "seniority" promotions And yeah, what is the deal on the SS situation at New Britain? Have they promised that vacancy to Levi Michael via his seniority rights? (Whenever it is that Michael regains his health, that is). Or to Niko Goodrum?
  22. Well the Rangers this year might be worse than the Twins over the last 2.5 years, but the 2011 experience will really stick in the memory bank for a long time to come. The data that I remembered looking at covered the average days lost to DL for the years, 2010-2013, and believe it or not, at the major league level anyway, the Twins were actually the 8th healthiest. http://cdn.fangraphs.com/blogs/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/4seasons.jpg I think the major league health issues for the Twins have been magnified by the lack of depth options on the 40-man roster, so it might seem like more injuries than are actually taking place. Of course, this year's and last year's losses in the Twins minor leagues are near-catastrophic...Meyer, Sano, Buxton, Rosario, Zach Jones, Michael, Landa, and possibly Fernando Romero...immediately come to mind, I'm sure there are a lot more.
  23. Since they took Drew off of our hands last year....Chris Herrmann and Eric Fryer?
  24. More than outplaying the rostered SS in AAA, apparently.
