  1. I think so..... (This season Meyer vs. LHB 3.70 FIP 3.05 SIERA 12.19 K/9). There are also actual LHP in Roc. Darnell ( Major league stats vs LHB 2.45 FIP 0.77 SIERA 6.75 K/9). And Johnson (Major league stats vs. LHB 1.75 FIP 2.23 SIERA 9.31 K/9). But they're all needed for the stretch run in the IL. Oh, and there's this.... soooo..., a decision has already been made on Meyer, one way or the other:
  2. Thompson's 10-season minor league odyssey and sketchy stat line seem to indicate he'll fit right in. Needing a "lefty who's getting lefties out" doesn't exactly sound like a vote of confidence for T-Bar and Deuce.
  3. Looks like a T-Bar vs. A-Tom September grudge match for a 2015 LOOGY spot.
  4. And the winner is..... Aaron Thompson?
  5. Correction, in the 4th inning, It was a hit, then 2 HBP, K of Delmon, and then the walk to Hardy. (Losing Hardy was the crusher to May getting out of the jam, he has a paltry BB% of 4.7% and this year is an extremely high percentage, GB/IFFB hitter).
  6. To the arb experts out there.... I'm wondering what this current run of games started and possibly maintaining his current OPS+ of 136 will do to his potential arbitration value come off-season. They refused to put a claim in on Bonifacio, who was and is a nice bench weapon, as he could play both the Inf and the OF and had blazing speed, with the possibility of only being on the hook for $1.925M (KC had to pay an additional $575,000). Shafer makes $1.09M this year..... around what potential dollar amount would the Twins completely walk away from Shafer for 2015?
  7. 2014 combined IP so far Burdi 56.1 (37 college) Reed 67.0 (37 college) So apparently, it isn't necessarily excess innings. Could it be, the Twins are fully satisfied with what they've seen in Burdi and have already slotted him on the 2015 fast-track? And perhaps, Reed is now getting the chance to vault past the recovering Zach Jones, currently a step ahead of him, and joining Burdi on a similar fast track, just a few months in back of Burdi? Has anyone gotten reliable velo reports for Reed? It was reported on draft day that he was consistently in the mid-90s and touched 97.
  8. How many Twins prospects get an AFL invite the year they are drafted?
  9. Everything you say seems very reasonable in context, and yet, in walking back his ASG game theory a bit, he threw in the "I've never seen Joe Mauer want something this bad" remark. I've got to think almost every MLB player wants a pennant, and then a World Series ring, more badly than a hometown ASG appearance.
  10. Gardy might have walked his quote from Twitter back a bit for Berardino's just-published article, but saying that he's never before seen Mauer "really want something bad" isn't the most flattering thing to say, either:

  12. Patrick Reusse has been espousing a theory since the 2011 "bilateral" Mauer nightmare, namely, that Gardy, consciously or unconsciously, has frequently slipped in some, oh so subtle needles when referring to how Joe Mauer is doing. Reusse also stated on Sunday evening that he's convinced that all of the losing has finally taken its toll on Gardy, to the point that he thinks Gardy will ask out of the job at season's end. Yesterday, when Gardy decided to give Mauer getaway day off against KC, here was his quote: I thought little of it at the time, as Mauer hadn't missed a game or inning since his return over two weeks ago, although it did strike me as kind-of-odd phraseology. And then this little quote just popped up this afternoon, from Gardy's pre-game banter with Mike Berardino: MLB ballplayers are human beings, even the future HOF veteans. But could this really be a valid reason for Mauer's slow start? Or is this following in the line of the strange comment about the shifted infield defense after the loss to KC on Wednesday, from a frustrated and beaten-down manager who missed a night's sleep flying into Baltimore at 5 AM this morning?
  13. Don't Look Now II*** 1) The Astros with ~30 games to go this season, have already won 6 more games than ALL of last season- and only 2 less games than the Twins (57 vs. 59). 2) And they have a SP staff with an ERA one full run under the Twins staff (ERA 4.03 vs. 5.02) 3) They have such confidence in their current SP staff, Top 100 recent call-up, 22 year old,Mike Foltynewicz (temporarily in their pen), plus Appel, now healthy and on the way, they were in the position to trade one of their high-upside 24 year-old arms in Jarrod Cozart, to the Marlins for a nice package of top prospects in return. 4 Collin McHugh was absolutely shrewd highway robbery as a waiver wire pickup. 4) And they did make other significant moves at the major league level before this season that have yielded major league positive impact, and given the season over season improvement, I'm not sure if your Point #9 still holds as much water. *** [Not a big fan of some of the strange goings-on in Houston, definitely Too Much Drama.... but the club has clearly made strides at both the major league level and a bolstered farm system].
  14. Or maybe TR just saves his "better than his numbers", "consistency" and "prepared" platitudes and cliches when signing FAs and publicly considering promotion of his very best pitching prospects?
  15. Yup. That was my biggest complaint in the Ryan Era, sign and flip tactics, gives you the cover for fielding a team that ensures you will at least have a prayer of projecting a semblance more requisite for the major leagues rather than the St Paul Saints. Major miss on Ryan's part for not laying out a better plan with plenty of available dollars for acquiring the Scott Kazmirs, Scott Feldmans and Paul Maholms of the world- which was baffling, as Ryan has demonstrated the ability to extract value from low-end expendables and seemingly could have done even better with higher end rented talent.
  16. I may have missed the announcement, but Aaron Slegers was doing well in Ft Myers until his last outing on August 16. And now I see him on the GCL Twins roster. Is there any report of an injury, disciplinary action, etc. The move seems unusual assuming he's not on a rehab assignment and I hadn't heard that he's gone on the DL. Any word?
  17. How could Dayton Moore have traded a Tampa Bay player?
  18. Again, no disagreement here on that assertion. (Of course, this laudable Span-Meyer move became peripherally a part of a deeper bungle in stripping the Twins of any major league starter-level talent in CF in one week on Ryan's part, and not acquiring a suitable CF placeholder- which is still hampering the Twins in late 2014 with their ROY playing out of position).
  19. This post requires installation of a Multi-Like button.
  20. I doubt there's a bigger Meyer-backer, long-term, than myself. And trading him for Span was a deal that had to be made. I may be mis-interpreting your comment, but I beg to differ on the "Span and the theory of an aging player and a ton of regression". While it's bound to happen as his career continues on the wrong side of 30.... this year he's topping or matching every career category in his slash line and in his OPS+... moreover, he's already at a career high in SB with a month to go in 2014 (and a highly successful Steal rate for someone at age 30, his wSB is also at the career-high level from five seasons ago- 2010 was the only year with the Twins that Span was significantly above league average in wSB- and at or below "League Average" wSB for a leadoff hitter for 4 out of 5 years with the Twins wasn't offering the club much help at that spot in the order. Another measure of baserunng, "Spd"- [“…Stolen Base Percentage, Frequency of Stolen Base Attempts, Percentage of Triples, and Runs Scored Percentage.”] .... rates out at "Excellent" and Span's number this year is only topped out by his 2008 season ). Aging regressor? If you look at how this season is going, he's really gone "Back to the Future" in his regression, "regressing" close to his career-best numbers from six seasons ago at age 25 in 2009. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/s/spande01.shtml
  21. Great article. I'm not sure who gets credit, but Shafer sure is swinging better than since he first arrived in the Twins outfield. As in the case of Sam Fuld, guys like Jordan Shafer and Emilio Bonifacio and Todd Redmond become available every year and homework on them needs to be done well in advance. The Twins FO did their job well in both waiver claim cases. Ultra low risk, medium reward options. What's not to like? Especially for team with so many holes and fringy guys on the 40-man roster. I still have my doubts about Shafer longer-term (especially against LHP), but guys with a certain level of a mix of talent, skills and athleticism can have it all come together for a short or even an intermediate stretch of time that can prove beneficial and possibly downright valuable to the club. Puts doubt on the blanket theory of many that 25th men spots are.to be so easily dismissed. And now you set up a scenario where a CF job will not just be handed to Aaron Hicks in April, 2015. A little competition and depth are good things!
  22. In the spirit of pot stirring, I get that Mauer might need a night off, but given the currently slumping Twins lineup against KC, he's got a lifetime .360 BA against Guthrie, with a 1.204 OPS. Meanwhile, Dozier might have gotten the night off instead (.125 BA .313 OPS vs. Guthrie) with maybe Escobar moving over to 2B and Santana getting another rep at SS, Parmelee in LF, Shafer in CF. (Or Mauer as the DH in the above mix). Just suggestin'.
  23. As Winston pointedly points out.... Forgive me RB, but per our discussion of a couple nights ago, is this one of those instances you were referring to when when descriptive adjectives "silly" and "ridiculous" viably come into play as a riposte when you "hang one out there?"
  24. Postgame Twinsights: What happened on that Mike Moustakas shift? The Rashomon Effect refers to the famous Akira Kurosawa movie and its depictions of contradictory interpretations of the exact same event by different people. I usually record Gardy's post-game presser, he's usually pretty entertaining with his colorful interplay and jabs at the media- and of course, potential new Gardyisms, plus, it's the best way to get some unfiltered thoughts on his impressions of the just-concluded game. On this night, things turned a little uncomfortable and somewhat cryptic when a couple of scribes questioned Gardy about midway through the Q & A session on the, what-turned-out-to-be crucial, Moustakas tapper to 2nd in the 8th inning that resulted in an infield KC single Maybe it's a good thing there were only two versions of the story officially on the record from Wednesday night's game. I thought the team has played the division-leading, and hottest team in baseball, KC Royals pretty tough the last two nights, and on the road, no less. No reason for everybody to hang their heads and throw in the towel on the season. It just looks like it's time for an infielder/coaches meeting to get everybody back on the same page regarding the defense. Version One: Version Two:
