  1. Maybe not a huge fan, but I bet you might have been at least a middling fan of Big Papi?
  2. Are we forgetting the silver lining in every cloud of "frustration"? After just one (extended and brilliantly pitched) game, the Twins team ERA went from 3.54 to 3.05 and the Twins dropped from 11th place to 5th place in team ERA rankings. If the Twins can maintain anywhere near that level throughout the season (and not to forget, significant veteran and rookie help is waiting in the wings), the run drought will be much less frustrating.
  3. My nephew's college teammate is from Puerto Rico and I had the good fortune to be able to travel there to see them play in San Juan a couple years ago. Both my nephew's teammate and the people I met there are very proud of both their island home and their American citizenship. And curiously enough, they share the same distrust and cynicism we statesiders have of political corruption and hypocrisy that have benefitted the few at expense of the many. Because of the pervasive corruption and imminent and looming bankruptcy of the local government, Puerto Ricans have been fleeing the island and heading to the US mainland in great numbers, long before the recent weather disaster- of which has only served to make a very bad situation even worse. Through all of this, support for statehood has grown from about equal to status quo in referenda 30-50 years ago, to now slightly above 50%. Meanwhile, support for independence has steadily shrunk over this same timeframe, also to the benefit of statehood support numbers.
  4. Yep. Noticed that immediately- the dangers of writing articles beyond one's scope or depth. US Unincorporated Territory and officially referred to as the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico (from English Law?). Puerto Ricans are US citizens. Past referenda have shown overwhelming public support for either statehood or maintaining the status quo- as opposed to very tiny support for independence.
  5. technicality point-> Duffey came on in the 13th and finished the 14th to record the win. What is Duffey's projected role long-term for the Twins (if any)? 1) SP looks like a fading dream. 2) Closer? 3) Set-up? 4) (dreaded) Spot-Starter/Long Reliever?
  6. I strongly suspect that RB has the only Doors reference related to an MLB team on opening day in 2018. Truth be told, the worst Doors album is still a cut above what passes for most rock music today. And the poet and "Runnin' Blue Shaman", Jim Morrison gives us plenty of fodder to work with vis a vis the Twins. I mean, really, 'Cmon, cmon now', it wouldn't just "Touch Me" or make me "Wishful, Sinful" or a "Wild Child" if I were to "Tell All The People" that it's time to "Do It" and and join the "Easy Ride" on the 2018 MN Twins "Soft Parade" on Opening Day and all the way to the playoffs, amIright?
  7. Yep. FWIW, I was in Chattanooga and sat behind the Twins dugout for two games in 2015. Sano was one of the "vocal leaders" both in pregame warm-up sessions, and in the dugout during the games. Lots of sometime mischievious chatter between teammates and occasional chatter with off-field spectators and employees. Sano was a frequent instigator. However, I didn't notice anyone being "harassed." I guess that "proves" that Sano is.... what, exactly? Gregarious? Immature? Exonerated from Betsy's charges? Oof.... the scourge that Twitter sometimes can be. The platform has nuclearized the power to dangerously redefine the legal notion of "Rush to Judgement". Does anyone seriously believe that the "head usher" at AT&T Park freely shared with some random fan... the entire set of adopted policies and procedures taken relative to a perceived predatory sexually harassing Lookout player?
  8. Throwing the (former) first base coach's (superfluous) alleged behavior towards her into her allegations against Sano- was an immediate red flag to me- and it didn't seem to have helped her case with MLB, or to the basic right to the presumption of innocence inherent in our legal system. Weinstein, Cosby, et al are being justifiably taken down because victims have bravely pursued legal recourse and remedy- that apparently hasn't come close to happening in this case. I'll be the first to condemn Sano if and when charges are filed and the legal system can make a credible case against him.
  9. Bingo. I've also proposed that besides the AL East runner-up, the Mariners and Rangers are the most likely teams to be competing for Wild Card spots with the Twins. The Angels? I'm not seeing it. They seem to have had a curse set upon them. Ohtani hasn't shown anything this spring, and the rest of their starting pitching depth is a DL Disaster Zone waiting to happen.
  10. Just hopefully not like Hector Santiago....
  11. "Insinuating" means you didn't say the word. It's a means of fleshing out in conversation of just what you do mean. I think you added some clarity here. Thank you. A good GM has to recognize his current needs, where his team is at in the competitive cycle, where the main competition is similarly at, and then extending these concepts out in time via game theory the what ifs in the timeline for going all in. So far, the braintrust has avoided jumping into tempting, yet dangerously expensive risky FA or blockbuster trade gambles or hasty internal personnel moves that either hamstring the team or leave gaping holes going forward. The results of where we are now has been more than luck (even though you didn't insinuate that it was ). My take from all of this in this first 1+ year is that these guys have been both prudent and shrewd (even though still wet behind the ears) and suggests that there's no reason yet to think they can't continue in this prudent yet shrewd vein going forward.
  12. Therefore... Falvine = TR? I don't think so..... we're now witness to a series of trades and signings well above scrap heap level @ perceived strong value plays. And it's not just agents who misjudge the markets, it's contention vs. 29 other teams to perceive value and/or succeed or fail at acting upon said value. Odorizzi = Santiago? Please Lynn = Pelfrey? Nope. TR couldn't wait to extend injured mediocrity LoMo = ByungHo Park? Not in this galaxy Castro = JR Murphy? Major misperceptions of C value by previous regime Reed = Boshers? Is there a FA RP down to his last shot that TR didn't covet?
  13. Are you insinuating that what was accomplished by the braintrust this offseason might have been mere luck or accidental? Pardon me, but all evidence suggests that what was demonstrated this offseason was a lesson taught from a pair of sharp, well-trained 21st Century baseball business minds- accumulating valuable and talented pieces that build upon last years' success- without busting the budget, and without damaging continued future improvements and upgrades incoming from the farm pipeline. Let's revisit this topic one year from now; what we've seen thus far suggests that the braintrust this offseason have laid the groundwork for further similar personnel upgrades next offseason, while simultaneously securing and extending the optimum veteran core going forward. Short term moves or not, they have not shown anything thus far that suggests that this team isn't being positioned for an extended run well into the 2020s.
  14. Tough crowd out here, at least some of us, anyway. Let's see... We went from 2017 having one Mid++ guy and a still-developing rookie- who is now trying to avoid the sophomore jinx- and a stable full of back end, dead end and major question mark guys.... to this season's upgrades in adding two new quality SPs with proven #2 level potential (that gives any or all of 4 guys that could hit #2 production levels), and not to forget, quality pen additions..... in exchange for.... virtually nothing? Okay, so we didn't get a potential Ace... but, I'd say we definitely got a quantity of higher quality over the mostly mediocrity that was the Twins staff in 2017.
  15. I suspect that the 4 or 5 man rotation speculation is going to be the subject of many threads and articles between now and the end of March.
  16. Agreed completely with your analysis. But if one were to open, the prospective position would be far more lucrative than Minnesota.
  17. You nailed it, Mike. For the first time in nearly a decade, we have the prospect of a rotation that gives you a decent shot at winning nearly every single game. Barring a monster season from somebody like Texas, Seattle or Toronto, it looks like this acquisition puts the Twins as a front-runner for a wild-card, at worst.
  18. Perhaps the braintrust is holding off on biting those bullets until June/July player rental season?
  19. Nothing funny said on my part. I think there is an issue of misunderstanding here. I come here to praise Falvine, not to bury them. In a sense, my post was to emphatically state high fives all around are in order! But... if we're heading for some type of major success as appears to be the case, Falvey and Levine will be near the top of the wish lists when executive openings occur at the high dollar teams.
  20. The Twins finally bit the bullet, threw out the stultified parts of the "Twins Way" mythos, and (evidently) went out and got the right guys to run the front office (and loosened the pocket books a little in the process). Enjoy the ride while it lasts, folks. The big money teams' headhunters will likely be coming after Falvey/Levine in the years just ahead.
  21. Mostly agree. Strong case was easy to make for Cobb over Lynn, or Arrieta instead on the one-year, but a one year/bargain $ commitment to fill the gaping hole in the rotation is entirely acceptable vs. the alternative of Mejia, Hughes or Sanchez. Meanwhile Lynn stays highly motivated to perform at a high level to continue his pursuit of a big payday, and the Twins now have a nice cushion until Romero and/or Gonsalves prove themselves ready for the next level.
