  1. The Tigers "loss" is the Tigers "gain" (and the Twins "gain" is the Twins "loss") But hey, Cuddy projects as a worse RFer than Hunter, so there's that.
  2. Pelfrey actually acquitted himself very well today, 4 IP, 3 K, 0 BB, 3 H, 1 ER... against almost the entire Red Sox opening day lineup, sans Ortiz and maybe a couple others. (Thus, muddling the Twins 5th starter picture a little more).
  3. Yeah... it's very arguable that it is, in fact, the most likely option.
  4. Because he was "claimed" by the Twins when he was in limbo after the Yankess DFAd him, and then he was traded to the Twins.
  5. You don't think in a proper platoon that CF at least has the chance to be near League Average? 2014 AL CF- OPS .722 wRC+ 105 2014 HIcks v. LHP- OPS .792 wRC+ 133 2014 Schaf v RHP- OPS .681 wRC+ 94
  6. My numbers were taken directly off of Fangraphs. I'm not certain why they differ from BRef, and it was pretty clear who Nick meant by the "regulars".
  7. Yup. 1st AL .731 Mauer .732 RF AL .706 Arcia .752 LF AL .724 Hammer .747 DH AL .733 Vargas .772
  8. And not to leave out the "panic-free" veterans and all of their "presence" on the pitching staff:
  9. After last year's early season fiasco with multiple CF waiver losses, plus the simple fact that Florimon, Bartlett and Kubel had no business being on the opening day roster, the Twins made certain that they have plenty of extra "veteraniness" going into 2015- First- of course, "The Accidental Shortstop", Escobar, Second- "The Claimed Clingers", Nunez, Schafer, Third- "The Butera of the Outfield", Robinson, and, Fourth- of course, "The 40 Year Old OF Version", Hunter.
  10. Most unlikely February 2015 headline prediction that could now come to pass: Boyer Bolsters Bullpen
  11. Break out the DVRs. This game will be re-broadcast on MLB at 5AM CDT tomorrow morning.
  12. I;m not ignoring the non-100 prospect lists. I'm pointing out the most salient fact germane to the actual title of this thread. And that is- although we can all chest-thump about having bragging rights for a top farm system- having the most Top 175 prospects doesn't necessarily translate to a passel-full of Ace pitchers and perennial All Star position players, let alone, guarantee a string of ALC pennants and World Series appearances. It's all about what you allude to, plus a cogent and forward-thinking strategy and set of goals in the front-office.
  13. Geez, you're way too patient... and I know you're talking with tongue firmly implanted into cheek. Consider... the Dodgers #8-rated prospect, Scott Schebler, who projects only as a LF, and was 23 in 2014. He played for Chattanooga in 2014 and offensively led all Southern League OFers, besides ranking 2nd overall offensively in the League, with a .921 OPs and a 153 wRC+. His numbers were primarily bolstered by 28 HRs. And Also Consider.... Joe Benson.... yes, THAT Joe Benson was rated the 4th best Southern League OF in those particular stats (.264/.364/.410/.774 ------- 120 wRC+). Assuming that Buxton returns to 2013-level health and anywhere close to his 2013-type of production- he's up as early as May 1... but say, moving up to AA, he "falters" to only around "2014 Joe Benson Southern League production", in which case, Buxton should be in the Twins CF no later than the ASG. (I'm hoping Buck doesn't screw it up for me and get moved up "too soon", I'm in Chattanooga the weekend of May 8 to take in all of that Lookout series).
  14. Yes the Twins are backlogged with excess pitching, unfortunately, almost all of that "pitching excess" is of the untradeable variety- at least in the sense of netting a team upgrade. Anyone in particular that you have in mind?
  15. Good post. I mocked the Twins on the day of the signing, and identified just this likely thinking in the FO- something to the effect of - "Ladies and Gentlemen, meet your new 7th-inning set-up relief man!" They have a history of signing failed starters and promising the agent that his client will get a fair shot at a rotation spot, knowing all along that Stauffer's somewhat intriguing, albeit artificially-inflated, but still-high, K-rate over the last two seasons was just a possible part of the actual master plan in the Twins way of rolling the dice on "discovering" a discount-rate late-relief option. I'd look for Stauffer to change his mound-approach completely between now and March 31, and possibly show some improvement enough to at least temporarily move into the 2014 Burton role come April 1. Needless to say, I'm not very confident on this ending well for Stauffer, but the good news is that a decision should come quickly, ideally with the "promotion" of someone like Tonkin, or the call-up of whomever the youngster is throwing the best gas in Rochester.
  16. Right now it looks like only one new (aging and defensively suspect) veteran upgrade in the OF, and Escobar likely going to the bench represents a net downgrade for whichever veteran suspect ends up starting in CF. One new veteran starting pitcher, one "new" old veteran starting suspect pitcher, and at least one, maybe more, new veteran suspect(s) in the pen. In all likelihood, no prospects in the rotation, the pen, on the field or on the position player bench. The whole thing looks pretty suspect. Yep, I suspect that 73-77 wins sounds about right... or... maybe a little optimistic on my part?*** ***(I still hold out hope that this is all wrong, and unlike last year, the top guys that are dominating in AAA and AA are actually called up when they're dominating- not needing to somehow "show more consistency", and not some time in August or after September 1st.
  17. Check the first table, and the two boxes on the far right hand side.... to sum up, Further.... 1 in 16 position players from BA Top 100 lists became "perennial All-Star types" And.... 1 in 200 starting pitchers from BA Top 100 lists became "potential Ace types." Chickens. Need. To. Hatch. before we can start the actual counting.
  18. This is why you can't count all of your prospect chickens before they hatch and somehow translate "winning" the top farm system "battle" with the actual 162-game season battle..... see all those hot shot arms???.... that's better than a THREE out of FOUR bust rate for Top 100 pitchers
  19. Hunter will be 40 on July 18. Expect an extension on or around his birthday.
  20. It's surprising to a lot of folks who assume that Torii will be gone by July. Barring a Kubel-esque collapse, expect an extension by July 31.
  21. You haven't been around long enough. The Rays and Cards both still have a lot to offer and perhaps emulate- the Twins did get Gene Glynn and Neal Allen from the Rays. The Giants have been held up as a model for success by many of us contributors on TD- going back to the very first spring of Twins Daily's existence. But they aren't a perfect comp for the Twins because they usually reside in the top quintile for payroll. But, shrewd FA signings along with some decent small-to-medium-sized trades, plausible back-up plans usually in place, (and in a notable separation from the TwinsWay)-> quick turnarounds from disappointing seasons, and aggressive, shrewd use of payroll for the most part, are certainly areas of Giants excellence that the Twins could choose to emulate.
  22. It's wonderful to be able to brag about winning the "battle" for most high rated-prospects. Unfortunately, it's all just little more than words until that perceived talent translates to more wins and World Series appearances- or else we're stuck into waiting for "a tomorrow that never comes." The fact is, the Cardinals have almost continually drafted from the back- end of the draft, and don't operate the franchise payroll based on an unlimited checkbook- so making the correct decision on personnel the vast majority of the time has been a critical part of their success. They do however, have a history of rapidly developing to major-league-readiness, many of their supposed less-regarded talent and aren't nearly as subject to the boom and bust cycle- the cycle all too familiar in Twinsland.
