The Twins are most undoubtedly the most conservative organization in baseball in the movement of their prospects, particularly when you consider that they have been in rebuilding mode for six seasons.

Only in the Twins organization does a guy like Gonsalves move backward. He already has pitched 162 innings of AA baseball between 2016 and 2017. He has a career AA ERA of 2.21 with 188 strikeouts, and a career minor league ERA of 2.36. So, even though he finished the 2017 season in AAA, the LOGICAL thing to do is send him back to AA.

Article: Photographer Accuses Miguel Sano Of Assault

And if you sued someone because they shouted "Show me your XXxX" your case would be thrown out of court in 15 seconds. YOu don't think sex with a minor causes harm? Speeding is a crime against public safety, that is the crime. My suggestion is that before you tell someone to "study law more", you know what you are talking about.- 189 replies

The judicial system must measure harm. If there is no harm, there is no "crime". Someone yelling at you does not cause you harm. And, again, while I do not claim that someone deserves anything, when a woman instigates violence she walks away, and if the man retaliates she is the victim.- 189 replies

Article: Photographer Accuses Miguel Sano Of Assault
mlhouse replied to John Bonnes's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Good discussion. Here are a couple of my points, reiterating what some other folks have said. 1. The dictionary definition of sexual harassment is immaterial. For it to be true harassment there needs to be true harm. Someone shouting words at you does not cause true harm. 2. I agree we have approaching some real serious territory were "sexual harrassment" encompasses everythign a man does. 3. One of the problems with this issue is its disproportionality. A woman can falsely charge a man of rape or sexual harassment, and if she if found to be lying little is ever done. At teh same time, those false charges can completely destroy a man's life with little way of being compensated for such false claims. 4. This also enters into all kinds of areas of relations between the sexes. While I do not condone a man hitting a woman, and a man who hits a woman needs to be punished in some ways, often it is the woman who instigates the violence. Look at the Ray Rice video. I get it, Ray Rice should have never hit his wife ever. But look at the start of the video. His wife is the agressor. HIs wife is physically assaulting him. Look at the video of former FSU QB DeAndre Johnson (make sure you look at the long version of this). Again, the woman instigated the violence, holding her fist up to him as he tried to move through a crowd. She then kicked him and threw a punch. I agree that Johnson overreacted, but WHY SHOULD A WOMAN BE ABLE TO INSTIGATE VIOLENCE AGAINST A MAN AND IF THE MAN OVERREACTS SHE IS SOME PURE VICTIM WHO NEVER DID ANYTHING WRONG? If the "victim" is a man, we say he got what he deserved.- 189 replies

The problem with your attitude is in your conclusion. I never said it was OKAY in any shape or form. The problem is that it isn't true sexual harrassment. It is rude and boorish behavior, it is something I would certainly fire an employee over, but that is all it is.- 189 replies

The fact that you can be fired from your job for saying that has nothing to do with sexual harassment and everything to do with employment by will. The actual "crime" or probably more accurately tort of sexual harassment is a much more defined issue. If you tried to sue a coworker because they asked you to "show your *****", once, you would lose even if you had 100% proof. In our most historically famous sexual harassment suit, if all of the evidence that Paula Jones had was Clinton took her up to a hotel room and dropped his trow, she would have lost. That was why Bill Clinton's perjury about Monica Lewinsky and other women was not jsut a matter of "sex". Jones needed that evidence to demonstrate sexual harassment. And even if she could have gotten the evidence of those issues, she still had a weak case because she had little evidence that her career was impacted.- 189 replies

A lot of it is alcohol and/or drug related. People lose their inhibitions and say things they would not normally say. Even in a sober enviroment young men want to pursue young women but really do not know how. It is a real fine line and we should be careful not to cross it.- 189 replies

1. You simply do not know what you are talking about because 6% is an astronomical number for false reports of a crime. For other crimes it would be substantially lower. This is a significant problem because it cast doubt in these situations. 2. No, I disagree. Bad manners is not a sexual "assault". Someone yelling "show me your XXXXXX" is not a sexual assault and never should be. It is terrible manners. But not sexual assault. I think we will make a huge mistake opening the flood gates in loosening up what we consider to be sex crimes.- 189 replies

6% is a lot of false accusations. The other point I am making is that many of this waves' allegations are not sexual assaults: they are just a (often young) man's attempt to ask a woman for sex in a very idiotic manner, maybe even aggressive manner. Given today's coverage of "sexual assault" I think we need to be very wary of these types of issues.- 189 replies

These allegations need to be carefully examined. And one thing that really needs to be examined overall in our current discourse is are these things "sexual assault"? Clumsy approaches for dates or sex are not sexual assault. Nor is consensual sex given to receive something in return. Not too many years ago Johann Santana was accused of raping a woman and it was a false charge. Luckily for Johann that was kept pretty quiet and the fact is that the woman who did the accusing was a known nut who had consensual sex with him around the clubhouse (my parents live in that development). It is not rare for women to falsely accuse men of sexual assault or to accuse them of assault when it really isn't. Balancing this is a difficult issue so rushing to conclusions is something we should not do.- 189 replies

Article: What Do The Twins See In Tyler Kinley?
mlhouse replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Agree to disagree all you want, a rookie relief pitcher who has 15 straight bad appearances isn't a prospect. Within those 15 appearances you can very readily determine if the is NOT going to be a major league level pitcher. You might not be able to tell if he is going to be a contributor, but you can tell that if he isn't much more quickly. As far as your second point, sorry, if this is what the new FO is doing then they are missing something. If they have a bias (and it appears they do) against prospects and/or players selected by the previous regime this will hurt the team. -
Article: What Do The Twins See In Tyler Kinley?
mlhouse replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
It isn't. Again, the purpose isn't to make a FINAL determination. You know with a high degree of certainty within 15 relief appearances if the kid CANNOT make it. If that is the case, your answer is clear. You send him back to the minors and that is that. But, if you get him up early enough you can then take the next step and keep throwing him out there or perhaps increase his role i.e. from mop up relief to more critical situations. Here is the other aspects of Bard and getting an opportunity last season. First, he was in a position taht the following offseason he would have to be exposed to the Rule V draft or put on the 40 man. Second, he was already 26 years old with a career that had been delayed by arm problems right after we drafted him. WHy not give a guy you drafted as a first round (supplemental) prospect a chance, particularly when he was performing well in AA? Give him the 15 appearances you gave other players and see how well he does? -

mlhouse replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I get that the minor league evaluation process is part of the process. I live in Ft Myers and get to a handful of Miracle games. You can easily see the prospects that really do not have much of a chance of getting much further just by sitting in the stands. But there are other guys who are very successful at a level and you need to move them up continuously to find get to their level of success or failure. A guy like Andrew Vasquez is one of those types. If you watch him pitch and look at his measurables (fastball speed, etc) it doesn't match up with his statistics. How does that guy have 158 strikeouts in 108 innings? And the truth is some of those guys like Vasquez can carry their success up to the majors and others cannot. Regardless, the biggest issue I have had with the Twins organization, previous and current, is that they did not move their prospect up quickly enough given we were a rebuilding organization, preferring to give time to waiver wire level replacement players they bring in. Like I said, why not give Luke Bard a chance instead of all of those waiver wire pitchers they brought in? It would have been difficult for Bard to be any worse. THen they could have had better information to make their roster decision this offseason. Again, I concede that the liklihood of Bard making an active roster this season is limited. But I would rather the Twins give him the opportunity to fail than some other team, because on the other side of that coin is that he could have had some value to the team at the major league level. Small chances like that often make a team because they do not come with much risk or financial committment. -

Versus zero. And, I disagree. The 15 appearances is plenty to evaluate a guy who does not have a chance. That is the first step in prospect evaluation. -
Article: What Do The Twins See In Tyler Kinley?
mlhouse replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I think that is a minor point compared to my main one: to lose Luke Bard without him every performing for the Twins is poor management. The Twins could have brought him up sometime during the season instead of a lot of other pitchers that lets face it were replacement level. Give the guy 15 appearances at teh MLB level and see if he was any good. He was already 26 and had reached the spot were he would be vulnerable to the Rule V draft. Then you have the information you need whether Bard should have been put on the 40 man or not. If he looks good in the 15 appearances (you give him more obviously) and you protect him on the 40 man roster going into 2018. If he doesn't, then you leave him off the 40 man roster. I get it, most likely he is not going to be a MLB level pitcher and will be returned to the Twins. I also get that the FO knows more than me (I live in Ft Myers so I see the Miracle team and have seen most of the Twins prospects come through, but have never seen Bard pitch) but with many prospects the real proof is actually performing. That is why there are September call ups and my point that the team gave all kinds of opportunities to waiver wire rejects at teh cost of sitting on their own prospects cannot be refuted. I called for the Twins to call up Trevor Hildenberger long before they did. They might have been even better if they recalled him earlier, but they preferred the rejects over a prospect liek Trevor who only had success every level of the minor leagues. -

Article: What Do The Twins See In Tyler Kinley?
mlhouse replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
This is why the previous and current management's approach to moving prospects has been flawed. I get that Burdi has been injured and really has not had a chance to move up in the minor leagues because of those injuries, but the Twins could have had Luke Bard pitching in the major leagues last season. He was already 26 years old with a career delayed by extensive arm injury. Why not bring him up and face ML hitters and see how effective he was? I get we were in a "playoff" run and even got to play a single playoff game, but we had innings for Nik Turley (11.21 ERA), Adam Wilk (7.84), Drew Rucinski (10.38), Tim Melville (13.50), Nick Tepesch (5.40) and a host of others. We could have given him 15 appearances in long relief outings and see what he could do. Most likely he would not have been successful and I fully think that he will be back in the organization, but now he is gone without ever getting a chance to demonstrate his abilities for the Twins. If he is a MLB level pitcher some other team will benefit from our thrown away opportunity. The other factor that bothers me about the Bard/Burdi situation is that the teams that took them could have selected Kinley, but did not. Hopefully this guy is a diamond in the rough that will be a rare pitcher that is more effective in the majors than the minors. -
1. I think they should have given Luke Bard innings last year at the big league level. The guy just turned 27 so they should have pushed him up with at least a September callup to evaluate him at that level. Arm injuries have killed his career. 2. Swapping Kinley for Bard is probably even. Two 27 year old guys getting a chance to get out of their current situations. If you were to play the odds, it is unlikely that either guy makes the big league organizations of their Rule V drafting team. I do think Bard is the better prospect but because of his injuries it is limited. 3. I think the same is true with Nick Burdi and most likely he will be back in Minnesota. But here is the truth. I wish Burdi and Bard well. I hope they both become great MLB pitchers. I doubt they get the chance with the Twins organization so if I am glad other organizations will give them a chance.

You cannot use statistics to evaluate rookie league level players. WHose stats were these in the Gulf Rookie League? G 47 PA 199 AB 173 R 19 H 35 2B 10 3B 0 HR 3 RBI 25 .202 .296 .312 .609 Answer: Derek Jeter the 6th overall pick that season. These were good trades for the Twins. They traded away two slots in the international market "draft" and received two reasonable prospects for them. There was no guarantee that the Twins would be able to find international players worth signing with their signing slots. But instead, received a player that was drafted #85 in the draft, round 3 who signed an above slot contract in Jacob Pearson (a bonus the Twins do not have to pay) and a solid college catcher selected in the 5th round.

Those calculations are erroneous. When you travel from Asia to U.S., the jet stream is behind you. So, you can travel to Hong Kong to CHicago in about 14 hours. But when you travel from the U.S. to Asia, the jet stream is against you. So, then it takes you 14 hours to travel from San Francisco to Hong Kong.- 68 replies

Article: Can The Twins Win With Dozier And Mauer?
mlhouse replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
The Twins simply were not good enough to "go for it". Most every year some team overplays their talent and has a record for the first portion of the season that is better than it should be. However, even a cursory look at the Twins 2017 run differential showed that this team was nearer to the bottom of the league than being an above 500 ball club and division leader, even in a weak division. THe Twins have a handful of guys that figure over the long run, but their roster is far from complete. They fooled themselves this season by pretending that they were better than they were and because of that we are going to pay the price of not bringing up players like Mitch Garver and a lot of pitching prospects because they are going to have to get their major league adjustments in future years, costing the team losses in those years that they should have incurred in 2017. Brian Dozier has unfortunately been part of an organization that had management stall their rebuild by clinging to the "Twins Way" despite the need to radically rebuild from scratch. -
One note about Andrew Vasquez's scoreless streak. Technically, it is a streak of unearned runs. In the game I watched him pitch he gave up two runs, which were "unearned". The kid has been really consistent in his minor league career with only marginal stuff, but has good control and keeps the ball down.
