  1. If we trade him in the offseason, the buyer gets two years of his service at a reasonable cost. If we wait till trade deadline next summer, buyer only gets one and a half years. His value is higher now even if he produces at the same rate next year, which is questionable.

    Plouffe

What the latest report on his return?

  4. He is also second in the league in SB behind Mike Trout.
  5. Excellent article, Seth, you nailed it. No need for a fire sale today. Nice to see that folks have mostly walked back from jumping off the cliff, and the comments are more reasonable today and less visceral (with a couple of exceptions). I like the suggestion of leaving Valencia at 3rd and putting Plouffe at 2nd when he returns. May not work out, but it has tremendous upside; why not use the next couple of months to make a determination for next year.
  6. "I started making a list of the top 10 things I hate about this trade for today’s Gleeman and the Geek podcast. I’m up to #28." Try breathing into a paper bag.
  7. "I hate the Twins traded a high-upside player to division rival without knowing if he was willing or maybe desperate to sign a long-term extension." I guess you missed the news that he blew out his elbow five years ago and has been wildly inconsistent and consistently wild and mediocre since.
  8. Michael is very questionable. Rosario is much more likely.

    New Britain callups

Since he started at Fort Meyers and spent some time on DL, he only has 34 games at New Britain while the league leaders are over 85.

    New Britain callups

With New Britain likely headed toward the playoffs, we may not see some prospects early in September. Hermsen and Benson would be probables, but I am especially eager to see Hicks and Arcia. With his five hits on Wednesday, Hicks has moved to the top ten in league OPS, and most of the others on the list are 1B or DH. Most importantly, his left-handed productivity has caught up with his right-handed productivity this summer. Meanwhile, Arcia would be leading the league in both BA and OPS if he had qualifying plate appearances.

  12. Professional sports franchise economics are far beyond my understanding. What I find curious are two inconsistent fan rants: a) abuse heaped on the Pohlads for not spending more on personnel and abuse heaped on the Pohlads for paying market value for Mauer and Morneau.
  13. There is a misconception that Sano is sitting because of errors. Coincidentally, he sustained a minor injury the same game he had three errors. I heard he is "day to day".
  14. Note that the recent increase in homers is heavily tilted to left field. Right field remains a problem due to plaza wind tunnel effect with wind blowing in more than out and the right center wall. To get a ball over that wall on the CF side requires a blast almost like Thome's two over the batter's eye.
  15. I agree that Span is prime trade bait for the reasons stated. However, Span isn't quite the stellar star you make him out to be. He is an average major league center fielder. His OPS is 22nd in the top forty big league center fielders. His OPS is 20th out the top forty leadoff hitters and 16th in OBP.
  16. How is that Hendricks put up those numbers in AAA?
  17. With Hicks and Benson injured and stalled, I expect Arcia may pass them by on the way to the bigs. If Span gets traded, Revere moves to center, and Arcia may be brought up to play right ... if his brief AA time says he's ready. If not, it would probably be Mastroianni or Tosoni or some other placeholder.
  18. 14 for 22. Has there ever been a better home run streak in Twins history? Perhaps the Killer back in the day, but I'm not sure how to research the question.
  19. Believe what you want, but fangraphs disagrees. http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/whos-the-most-underrated-player-in-baseball/ I have to confess I haven't a clue what he's talking about. He appears to make numerous assumptions in choosing which data to use, what to add to what, etc. Bottom line, the folks on his most underrated list compared with his "least underrated" seem to say that up is down and down is up. His most underrated include a wholly mundane group while his "least underrated" (he couldn't quite dare to call them overrated) essentially consists of a number of MVP candidates. I'm not convinced.
  20. Span is overrated. He is good not great as either a center fielder or as a leadoff hitter. He has average range and an average arm for a centerfielder, and he ranks toward the middle of all leadoff hitters in the AL in OBP (6th) and OPS (9th). Overall, he is an average center fielder and an average leadoff hitter.
  21. For whatever it's worth, here are lifetime OPS of the great "singles hitters". Pete Rose .784 Rod Carew .822 Wade Boggs .858 Joe Mauer .871 The other three didn't play an a primarily defensive position, either.
  22. I know that is what kept many away in the beginning. On the other hand, his growth in the last couple of years is more consistent with a teen ager than early twenties.
  23. Last night, a routine ground ball to second came off a splitter. The night before, he struck out a lefty with the splitter.
