  1. that sound you hear is the window of opportunity for trading liriano for anything decent closing. 2.2 IP 7ER and 3HR doesn't inspire confidence in any buyer.
  2. "insert token comment about blaming this loss on Butera since he (Butera) clearly deserves all the credit for Liriano's recent success..." oh boy 2.2 IP 7ER and 3HR...not what the doctor ordered for the Twins tonight...
  3. Kansas City has been "way on their way to rebuilding" for countless years and they still suck. Sure, their future looks brighter but until they actually prove it on the field, i'd still stick with the Twins for the next 5 years. Having said that, my expectations are very low for the Twins.
  4. While I completely agree you can cherry pick players/contracts to make any point, why do you think making multiple bad decisions and getting little to no value from those players is better than over paying one guy who's the best at his position? Here is another way the Twins are spending $24.25m/yr. 7W 14L 6.45ERA 152IP 194H 79K 109ER 66BB 1.71WHIP 4.67K/9 This ghastly pitching line is the combined totals for Pavano, Blackburn, Baker and Capps for 2012. At a combined cost of $24.25m in 2012. This list gets us 3 pitchers that make up our atrocious rotation and one inconsistent reliever. For the same price we get one guy who leads the league in OB% and might get his 4th batting title (the only catcher ever with 3). A team like the Twins can swallow the extra 8-10M that Mauer is overpaid a lot easier than it can swallow 24M on terrible pitching. It CANNOT afford to waste 32-34M on both. All Mauer's contract does it put more pressure to not screw up other contracts, but they can still compete with his 23M if they choose wisely.
  5. I'll just completely ignore the first part of this post for obvious reason. No need to insult your intelligence. However, as far as blaming Mauer's contract for the Twins' sucking....Let's pretend he's only making 13M instead of 23M. What's that 10M get the Twins? 1 half-decent starting pitcher? We could absolutely use another pitcher in the 10M range, but that would still leave us 2-3 arms short of a respectable starting staff. 10M doesn't take the Twins from the basement of the AL to the top of the AL Central. The Twins have won the whole division with payrolls below 60M.
  6. $19.5 million a YEAR? Excuse my language, but you're F#$&ing crazy. We're talking about a guy whose ERA over his last 45 starts is over 5.00 dating back to last season. His lowest season ERA is 2.16 but that was before his surgery. Since then, it's 3.62. Every other season has been 4+. How many "Aces" have ERA's over 4? Maybe 19.5 M over 2 seasons. Yes he shows flashes of figuring things out. His ERA is 2.74 over his last 8 starts, but that's 8 starts not a whole season. Can you imagine if the Twins signed him for $19.5M a year and his ERA was 5 again? People hate the Mauer contract, but at least Mauer is good and consistent (when healthy), but paying frankie $19.5M for 10 good starts a year is insane.
  7. I feel like everyone has this same conversation every year. "Wow, look at Frankie, he has the potential to be the ace of this staff. lock him up." Yet for every dominant start he easily has 2 crappy ones, he just bunches them together. I say trade him and hope for the best. If there's anything Frankie has shown us is that he is consistently inconsistent. If the Twins had any depth at starting pitching he'd have been gone years ago.
  8. hey if we get this whole pitching thing sorted out we'll have 4 out of 4 pieces in place to be on the fast track to getting swept in the first round of the playoffs like the good old days. Sadly...this would still be an improvement...
  9. So if that's how you describe hockey, I'd love to hear how you describe baseball, basketball, and football. Please enlighten us.
  10. ...we've all been hoping for Liriano to turn into the ace for the last 3 years...not happening.
  11. Killing the franchise? So, you're thinking that because Joe makes 23M a year it means the other 77M can't be spent on anything useful? The Twins have won the division with a total payroll of 55M before. Quit using his contract as an excuse for the rest of the team, mainly the pitching, (okay, pretty much just the pitching) being awful. One bad contract doesn't kill a team, 4-5 terrible starting pitchers does. (some flashes of respectability in there, but obviously still the reason for the Twins sucking this year)
  12. Mix in a double? He's on pace for 35 doubles this year which would be his second highest (career high of 42). He's not only hitting singles here. Not that far below his career SLG or OPS either, even counting his MVP year.
  13. absolutely love this post. Glad some fans actually get it. I feel like the ones that are complaining are the ones that only paid attention to the headlines last year and have been too lazy to actually watch some games this year or look up the stat leaders for this year. either that, or they are just flat out stupid.
  14. It sucks for Willingham, but I think he's victim of his positional depth more than anything. He's the Twins' MVP no doubt, but there are a handful of outfielders having better years than him so far. Remember, the ASG is voted on by position, not by worth to one's team. It'd have been nice to see more than one Twin at the game, but they made the right choice in Mauer. Mauer is clearly top 2 as a catcher in most stats so far, whereas Josh is more in the top 10 range for OF.
  15. Got a pretty good laugh out of this one. AJ beats Mauer in HR, RBI, and Slugging. Mauer beats him in every other stat including runs, hits, doubles, stolen bases, walks, average, OBP (first in the league by the way), and OPS. Good try though, glad you don't decide the remaining roster spots.
  16. I agree cr9617, it is a LOT more money, but paying a guy more doesn't make him a better player. If you get a raise at work, you don't all of a sudden become better at whatever it is you do. Boney, I agree on the Ferrari analogy. I'd rather have him take an extra day or two on injuries and get as close to 100% as possible and prolong his career and keep his production high. I don't understand why people want him to grind through every injury until his body is destroyed and he turns into that beat up Chevy. Beat up Chevy's are everywhere, Ferrari's are not.
  17. so where is your blog about Capps or Pavano for missing time? They just have shoulder/arm issues. Big deal. Shouldn't they be out there being "tough" and doing everything they can to help the team? Keep throwing even if it hurts. How dare they miss a few games to let an injury heal. What bugs me is the double standards here. People get hurt and miss time, no big deal. Mauer misses a couple games, or gets a scheduled day off and people flip out. Pavano makes 9M a year and he isn't doing jack for the team on the DL. Why not call him out? Capps sucks even when he does play, but he's missing time. At least when Mauer is healthy he's a productive player. And it also blows my mind that people equate a higher salary with higher output from a player. Mauer is the same player as he was when he was making 8M a year. Paying a guy more doesn't make him any better.
  18. finally, a fan that gets it. Thank you for a realistic recap of Mauer for the fans who demand 50 homers, 120 RBI and 162 games played from the guy just because he is being paid more money than he was a few years ago.
  19. feel good about yourself for ripping on a guy for being injured? seriously, you people need to move on from this "soft Mauer" crap. You have no clue how his body feels on any given day, and I guarantee if you were slid into by someone and got hit on an unprotected part of your body you'd be missing time, too.
  20. I'm sure it also has something to do with most fans just looking at the classic stats such as average, homers, and RBI and probably not caring about more complicated stats like wRC+ and FLD (PO+A)/(PO+A+E).
  21. I'm not physicist, but I'll give it a try: He hit the ball and it had a certain height, which happened to be higher than the outfield wall, at the precise moment that the ball crossed the plane of the outfield fence during the ball's trajectory. This is remarkably similar to roughly 100% of other homeruns ever hit anywhere. I also live in LA, near USC. Glad to see I'm not the only poor Twins fan stuck out here, although we're not missing much this season.
  22. Cuddyer is gone. Move on. He isn't coming back. Even if was out there and he account for 3 more wins at this point (which I doubt) the Twins would still stink. Yes he was a great guy off the field which is ultimately more important than anything in baseball, but I'd rather have a team full of the 25 biggest A-holes in the country and win a championship than have a bunch of nice guys that never win anything. just my two cents.
  23. i stopped reading after you said "I SEEN the disgust on Gardy's face..." seen? really?
  24. I don't think he'll ever break 20 homers again. 28 was just an amazing year, and unfortunately for the Twins it was his contract year. I hate how people blame Mauer for the contract. If your boss came in and offered to triple your salary, you'd sign, no questions asked. You wouldn't tell your boss, "no thanks, I don't think i'm worth that much, i'll sign for less so i don't hurt the company." Just because Mauer is now making a ton of money doesn't mean he is going to be as good or better than he was when he signed. It sucks for the Twins, yes, but if anything you should blame management for offering the contract in the first place. But, on the flip side, the Twins have been competitive and better team overall with a far less payroll than they have now, so even if Mauer is taking up too large of a % of the team's payroll, it's no excuse for the rest of the crappy team given that they've raised the payroll considerably over the last few years.
