  1. It's definitely an enouraging development compared to the payroll comments that Dave St. Peter made just after the season. I'll wait to see what they do before I start looking for a good section for season tickets, though...
  2. I think it is a luxury to have Escobar as the utility guy - it would be nice if he could play with passable defense in the Outfield. If that were the case, he'd be a great Cesar Tovar clone. If the Twins can find room for Escobar, Dozier, Santana and Plouffe to all get at bats that would be awesome. Nuñez is pretty much out the door unless Escobar is traded. I think Santana and Escobar both deserve to be on the Twins' opening day roster. Re: Vargas - in 2014, he had 26 Homers across two levels, and his work so far projects to a shade under 30 homers over 162 games (which means he's probably closer to 20-25 per year at this point over a full MLB season). That might not be David Ortiz power, but it sure beats the guys that have been around at DH since Thome left. He's got room to grow, as does Arcia, and that Sano kid isn't far behind. I would like the Twins to keep the middle of the order as meaty as possible in the near term. If Dozier and Mauer and Santana can get on base, the big guys should be able to bring them home a lot in 2015,
  3. Interesting sentence from this link: http://www.1500espn.com/sportswire/With_hitting_coach_hired_rest_of_staff_remains_undecided_Ryan_says110614 "It's believed that Brunansky will be the only coach retained from Gardenhire's staff."
  4. Didn't see much of a need to make a change here, even though they will be hiring some new faces, having some consistency carry over from last year should be helpful. Does Bruno get credit for Suzuki's great year? Will Bruno be in hot water if Arcia and Hicks can't turn it around, or if there's noticeable regression from Santana, Vargas, Suzuki, etc?
  5. Yeah, that was a bummer - I wanted the t-shirt but I wasn't all that interested in the rest of it.
  6. This is kinda neat - too bad they don't really mention Kirby on any of the merchandise... http://www.topps.com/collectibles/archives-collection/1987-minnesota-twins/1987-twins-archives-collection-box-series-2.html
  7. Marge Schott was in a class of her own - I don't really think the comparison of an owner vs. a player is apt. While the stats that A-Rod compiled are tainted by his PED use, he wasn't the only one using. If PED's alone make someone a great player, why didn't Dan Naulty or Juan Rincon or Manny Alexander put up video game numbers like A-Rod, Clemens, and Bonds? His final stats are inflated, there's no doubt about it, but he still did it, amongst competition that was likewise using steroids, HGH, and whatever they thought could give them an edge. I won't claim that it's fair to the guys that were clean, or that clean players should have used to keep pace with the users. Enough people used on both sides of the ball that I'm reluctant to say that the careers of A-Rod, Clemens, Pettite, Bonds, etc. should be considered invalid.
  8. I dunno - the Hall of Fame is full of scummy, crummy people. I think guys like A-Rod, though awful as a role model for youth, nonetheless has made a lasting impact on the game. It would be one thing if his PED use happened in a vacuum, and none of the pitchers he faced were using PEDs, but we already know that is not the case. The entire era from the Bash Brothers through Barry Bonds' last season was played under this cloud of people using PEDs (and guys are still using - some of them are better than others at not getting caught). I think these players put up numbers in an environment in which drug use was rampant - I think it's impossible to know everyone who was really clean and who was not. I think the sportswriter voters will not elect these players, but I think a few of them might make it in via the veteran's committee somewhere down the line.
  9. yeah, the 61 topps cards were a bit ugly, everyone had "hat hair" - Jose Valdivieso, Billy Consolo, Reno Bertoia, and Frank Lumenti had the TC caps, and Don Mincher it looks like he was wearing a Senators cap that was airbrushed (see the pinstripes? That a Senators jersey). The team card was just everyone in Senators jerseys: http://img.comc.com/i/Baseball/1961/Topps/542/Minnesota-Twins-Team.jpg?id=713176af-4b28-4682-b719-881f139170bb&size=biggerthumb http://img.comc.com/i/Baseball/1961/Topps/336/Don-Mincher.jpg?id=fcf87c66-fe8f-4057-aa33-a9571e315f61&size=biggerthumb http://img.comc.com/i/Baseball/1961/Topps/469/Ralph-Lumenti.jpg?id=fc5d3e3e-6f6c-4f6d-92c3-03c81f0623dc&size=biggerthumbhttp://img.comc.com/i/Baseball/1961/Topps/504/Billy-Consolo.jpg?id=f49d40d6-39bf-4d5b-99c9-54e8a08a5814&size=biggerthumbhttp://img.comc.com/i/Baseball/1961/Topps/392/Reno-Bertoia.jpg?id=751a1915-b8f1-44ec-a86b-9a7f58edb685&size=biggerthumb http://img.comc.com/i/Baseball/1961/Topps/557/Jose-Valdivielso.jpg?id=edfb8f29-6452-40a4-9afe-7efaca179bd6&size=biggerthumb
  10. I bet they read the comments section, too! "please, sir, may I have another?"
  11. I'm looking forward to seeing a list of candidates from the Twins camp and/or names of people that have scheduled interviews for the position. I realize that the ink is barely dry on Molitor's contract, but I wish the Twins would throw us a bone, I am probably not alone in thinking that the pitching coach will getting a lot attention and scrutiny from the fanbase.
  12. It's more arrogance I think. The Yankees aren't going to change it, the Twins might do it, though. casual fans in the nosebleed seats are probably too far away to read the names anyway...
  13. I think it's the opposite - the Yankees don't have names on their jerseys becuase they assume everyone already knows who they are. They were one of the first to put numbers on the jerseys, though, to make it easier for fans to recognize Ruth and Gehrig, etc.
  14. I think a re-design might be a good idea, it's not that I want to forget the era from 1987 to the present, just that I think it is time to look forward instead of backwards. I feel on some level Twins fans have been nostalgic for 1991 ever since 1992. Instead of Minny and Paul shaking hands it can be Vargas and Sano! The Tater Tot Twins!
  15. TC was on the original caps in 1961 : http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-eC7-PA1rR9s/UNSwIS_Y7DI/AAAAAAAACGk/yVhaK53lmkY/s1600/1961+Minnesota+Twins.jpg
  16. I think Kelly would probably decline the invitation, if it was even offered, for health reasons. He had a stroke about a month ago, it's hard to say what the lingering effects of that will be.
  17. Throwback all the way - no names, no numbers - wool cardigans! Block Letters "M-I-N-N-E-S-O-T-A" and a blank back. Olde English "M" on the hats. No more bulky helmets! Pantaloons! Male fans must wear suits and bowler hats, fedoras, top hats, etc at the old ball grounds, are you not gentlemen? Ladies, cover those ankles! Have you no shame? or, yeah, just lose the pinstripes for now.
  18. Not to mention everyone gets to hear Bert talk on the Broadcasts, he'd be second fiddle in the Twins dugout. I think he's probably happy doing what he's doing now, it's a pretty sweet gig. I think the new coaches will all have to be willing to be second (or 3rd/4th) in command to Molitor. I think Bert has too big an ego for that (that's not a slight on Bert, I think his ego is one of the things that made him a great pitcher and why he's usually an entertaining person on air). . . The pitching coach will have to defer to Molitor, and I don't see that going over particularly well with every candidate mentioned. Who's the closest thing to Leo Mazzone/Dave Duncan/Larry Rothschild in Paul Molitor's circle of teammates?
  19. Realistically, who's the first Twin that will be tendered a Qualifying offer? Phil Hughes in three years? Maybe Brian Dozier? Most of their roster is still too young, or would never be given a contract the size of the QO. This year, I think Cuddyer will take it, or at least re-sign with Colorado rather than with another team. Even if Cuddyer rejects the QO, I don't think any team will offer him a better contract than Colorado can at this point. Liriano might do it, too, but I'm guessing he's worth 3-4 years on the open market, so he'd take less annually and at 3-4 years it might be worth one draft pick to the team signing him.... Victor Martinez might decide to take it, too - 15MM is probably about his ceiling for annual value anyway, and he may or may not be planning to play that much longer...
  20. True - and for both teams' sake one would hope that they aren't done adding talent. Lind is actually best suited as a platoon with a guy that can hit lefties, but he's an upgrade over the Brewers 1B of the last few years regardless.
  21. That was a good move for both teams, I think. Adam LaRoche would probably have been more expensive than Lind was, Toronto gets a little wiggle room to sign a player or two and added a pitcher. Toronto also added the OF J.B. Shuck on waivers - he's probably a 4th outfielder, realistically, but he's an upgrade over Mastro and Kenny Wilson.
  22. I would agree, although the Twins did offer Santana 3 yrs last year with the QO attached. I think if the Twins just change all the dates on that contract, then Santana might want to sign it.
  23. It is a little bit baffling to me from Colorado's perspective - they could have spent that 15.3MM on pitching this offseason. I guess they are hoping that Cuddyer declines it and then some team (like the Mets) loses their minds and offers a three year deal to Cuddyer. To me, it seems like Cuddyer would be crazy to turn down $15.3MM, but maybe he thinks he can get 2-3 years on the open market for more total dollars. If he (and his agent) think that he can sign one last multi-year deal, it might be worth the risk. But the player needs to factor in that the other teams will not just be paying the player, but also giving up a draft pick. Who will think that Cuddyer is worth both a multi-year deal AND a draft pick?
  24. Hey, if they are calling Jack Morris, how about Dave Winfield, too? All St. Paul, all the time! I'm more nervous/excited about the rest of the coaching staff than I was about when they would announce that Molitor was the new manager. I don't mean to sound cynical about it, but I have thought for a long time that Molitor was the preferred choice of ownership and TR alike.
  25. yes - I think Molitor has a different motivation than making a living. He did take an extended break following his playing career to spend time with his family. I think that different motivation is a good thing, and something that Twins fans should be at least a little excited about. The cliche "he wants to win" is particularly true of Molitor, and it shows in the way he goes about his business.
