  1. Well, his option that the Orioles declined was for $17.5 MM - I think an average of $11 Million a year is probably his fair market value. He might have been able to get a little more annually on a 2 or 3 year deal, but this is a great deal for Markakis, and probably a decent deal for Atlanta, he might still be good in 4 years.
  2. Hunter will hit more homers than Mauer (I hope - Mauer's not going to hit very many) Mauer should have a higher OBP, BA, more doubles... I think SLG could be close, again because I think Torii will hit 15-20 HRs again this season, it's a question of how much Torii will regress in avg and obp now that he's another year older.
  3. I don't really see the case for induction being that strong, though Jim Rice was inducted for being "fearsome" despite some mediocre (compared to other Hall of Famers) numbers. I think if he led the league in some offensive categories, had some more MVP votes, played a little bit better for a little bit longer, there would be a compelling case for him, but unless he gets rejuvenated by the air in Target Field, I think he will be in that pretty good, but not quite good enough range. If he can linger in the majors for another 4 years (and play on a W.S. winner), he might get the Tony Perez treatment and make it in to the Hall.
  4. I guess there are pros to this move. Pro - Adding Hunter's bat to the lineup Pro - It's only a one year deal Pro - Molitor could have Hicks/Hunter/Santana in the OF lineup against "tough lefties" That's... about it. Torii was one of my favorite players (not just on the Twins) in his prime, so some part of me is very happy that he will be playing for the Twins again. The logical part of me, however, sees this as such a wrong headed move. It adds a player that solves none of the glaring problems of the 2014 version of the Twins, but it does add a sizeable $$$ to the payroll, effectively limiting further moves that could have been made.
  5. Ah, but the Twins already have a bad RF (who is younger and cheaper and could maybe possibly be better in the future we hope!), they need someone to play the more spacious LF.
  6. But if you're comparing Kaat to Blyleven on the basis of Strikeouts, I think Bert wins that comparison quite handily. Kaat averaged 4.9 K/9 for his career.
  7. *crickets* Maybe the non-tender deadline will see a little action and some new faces - seems like there are minor league spots open with the departure of guys lke Guerra and Romero . . .
  8. That's the rumor - Twins offered a contract already, I haven't seen any concrete number listed anywhere that it was two years. http://www.lonestarball.com/2014/12/2/7320261/texas-rangers-rumors-torii-hunter-rumors-continue-to-swirl Rangers Fans and Twins Fans seem to be hoping that the other team takes Torii at this point...
  9. New post on MLB Trade Rumors - http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/12/twins-notes-coaches-yang-pitching-targets-hunter-duensing.html#disqus_thread Twins have offered a contract to Hunter, usual suspects have been contacted about pitching help, not much to get excited about...
  10. I'm talking mostly in terms of the counting stats, less so than the advanced metrics. Mussina was better than Kaat, and had a higher peak. Roughly similar, though, are the counting stats that HOF voters have tradtionally (rightly or wrongly) used to elect guys. ERA, Wins, Shutouts, World Series Wins, yadda yadda yadda. Kaat had a lower ERA, but Mussina pitched in an offensive heavy environment. Mussina struck out more batters ( a lot more) but as Seth noted, that was also typical of the game at that time, fewer Runs, but also fewer Ks. Maybe Mark Buerhle is a better comp?
  11. Blyleven is 5th all-time in strikeouts... Top 5 in the league in Ks in 14 seasons - 4th or better every year for the whole decade of the 1970s. Compared to his peers (not including Nolan Ryan) Blyleven struck out more batters than most.
  12. He's going to want 4-5 years, probably $12-15 Million per year... not sure if that's out of the Twins' budget or not. It's probably more years than they want to invest in a free agent.
  13. I dunno about forgetting how to draw walks - he's only averaged about 40 walks a season. It seems like his problem is that he's not getting contact like he used to - his K% spiked to almost 18% last season, his extra base hit % was down, his balls in play percentage was a career low. Looks a little like Mauer's 2014 decline year. At 41 years old, I don't see Ichiro having a bounceback year - it's more likely that he's going to be even worse, so it's really just the P.R. of reaching 3,000 MLB hits at stake. He's currently got 4,122 professional hits (including his years in Japan), so he's only a little more than one bad season away from passing Pete Rose (not that anyone would really count those combined stats over here) for most professional hits all time. The Twins should look elswhere than Ichiro or Hunter for their OF needs.
  14. Can/would Ichiro play LF? I don't know if his body is up to being a full-time starter anymore. I agree that out of those two, I would vote for Ichiro over Torii. Hmmm.... veterans.... Eric Young, Jr. might be non-tendered by the Mets, not really interested in the Twins going after him. Maybe the Twins would trade for Marlon Byrd or Shane Victorino, but those guys don't really inspire much confidence either, especially since neither one is cheap, and both have had recent injury woes. Colby Rasmus, Melky Cabrera, Nori Aoki, Nick Markakis, Alex Rios, Chris Denorfia, Emilio Bonifacio, Delmon Young, Mike Morse, Jonny Gomes, Nate Schierholtz, Nyjer Morgan, Endy Chavez, Tony Gwynn Jr, Scott Hairston are all free agents.
  15. Descalso is a non-tender candidate - I think Dozier is closer to the first group than the 2nd. Plouffe I think is closer to the 2nd than the first. Don't know why I feel that way, it's unfairly rooted in a gut feeling. Both are better in my opinion than the 2nd group. I'd rank Dozier above Allen Craig, for sure. I'd rank Plouffe above everyone in group 2, for sure. Outside of that, until they actually play the games, it's anyone's guess how they will play next year and the following years...
  16. I think a really close contemporary comp for Kaat is Mike Mussina - if Moose is deemed worthy by voters and gets in, I think Kaat should be in too.
  17. How many other 17-time gold glove award winners have been passed over for induction?
  18. I think Blyleven was a better pitcher than Kaat, though I think both were very good. I give Blyleven the edge with all the Shutouts and Strikeouts. Some of that is longevity, but being able to remain on a major league roster (and in a starting rotation) is an accomplishment on its own. If the voters were looking at defense, I think Kaat would get a well-deserved boost. Both in reputation and iby the numbers, Kaat was one of the better defenders at his position. He could also handle the bat pretty well for a pitcher.
  19. y'all beat me to it, I was reading the same links - he seems like a pretty good guy to have in the clubhouse and I think he'll be great for the Twins' young outfielders!
  20. I'd be happy if they did even half that - a 2015 debut for Sano, May in the Rotation starting opening day, Rosario and Burdi sometime in 2015. To me that would be a lot (given the track record). In retrospect, May, Santana, Vargas, and Polanco all getting major league service time in 2014 was a pretty good step.
  21. Great! No more lollygagging! ALSO - Davis was an outfielder, and had some decent speed in the Minors: http://www.baseball-reference.com/minors/player.cgi?id=davis-001wal
  22. I guess it is encouraging to see that they have been trying to be as thorough and expansive as possible in hiring the new coaches. Looking forward to seeing what the Twins do to add talent on the field as well.
  23. The Twins' courtship with Hunter reminds me of a 80s teen comedy situation in which the nerdy boy waits and waits for the girl to pick him without accepting that she's only stringing him along in case every other option falls through. Get over it - go out with somebody else!
  24. Mariners may have just signed Nelson Cruz - 4 years, $58 Million or so.
  25. So the deadline to offer players like that a contract is Spring Training? At what point would they become free agents if the Twins did nothing at all?
