  1. Semi-related thought: I really wanted the Twins to sign Melky Cabrera. However, once the Twins signed Hunter, adding Cabrera on top of Hunter's signing would be a bad move. Same thing if the Twins went after Alex Rios. I think the Twins could still add Colby Rasmus or make a trade for a good defensive CF, but once they signed Hunter, the other plodding corner outfield types rightfully fell off the Twins' radar. I really wanted the Twins to go after Brett Anderson and Justin Masterson on one year deals. Once the Twins added Ervin Santana (and had already missed on Masterson) I was glad they didn't add Anderson on top of that. All of the White Sox signings would have been bad additions for the Twins, but in aggregate they will improve the playoff hopes of the White Sox.
  2. They also added Alex Rios to play in the oufield for them - taking the spot that had been held by Willingham and Ibañez. Yohan on a major league deal just means he's got a 40-Man spot, right? or is it a 25-Man spot? He's probably looking at the same role for KC that he had in Minnesota. The Royals will still be looking for another Starting Pitcher to take the spot vacated by James Shields...
  3. Very true, though Santana will be 35 in 2018 and 36 in 2019 - pitching 400 innings over those two years would not be unprecedented, but it's still a mark of a pretty good pitcher. Those options vesting seems unlikely, but if Santana can pitch effectively enough to get that many innings, he's earned that extra $14MM. Also, who's to say Molitor will still be the one managing in 2019? (sad trombone) (I hope he is)
  4. Of these three, which pitcher will have the most games started in 2015 for the Twins and why: Milone, Meyer, or Pelfrey?
  5. Also, Levi Michael is 23 today, but 2015 is his age 24 season; he turns 24 in February.
  6. Houston Astros sign Jed Lowrie for 3 years
  7. just means more $$$ for the person that correctly bets that the Twins defy the odds this year. The Mets got a big boost from.... Cuddyer? I guess? Not sure how the Orioles improved their odds...
  8. At this point the Marlins could probably snag Parmelee off waivers, though they probably want a LH bat to hit righties? Parmelee has a reverse platoon split.
  9. I could see the A's acquiring Parmelee to replace Brandon Moss (even though they added Billy Butler). Baltimore is running low on corner OF options, Toronto for sure (this is a Minnesota waiver situation after all), Texas may be looking to add a bench bat, he'd be an upgrade in Chicago or Kansas City to their bench bats, there's lots of AL destinations for him. Minnesota was just one of the worst fits for him going into 2015. Who knows, he might pass through waivers again and provide depth in AAA?
  10. It would be pretty impressive if Ervin Santana pitches 400 innings over those two years considering the Twins' best pitcher didn't throw that many this season. Unlike Hughes, Santana has reached the milestone 5 times in the past and was just 4 innings shy in 2014, so I guess it's more likely than some things, but still pretty unlikely that either option will vest.
  11. It's odd; each deal on its own feels like a questionable call, yet when they are all put together, I can't shake the feeling that the White Sox really improved their roster for the near future (3 or more seasons). I agree that I don't think the Twins would have benefitted from making these deals themselves (though I think I could live with a 3 year deal for Melky compared to the 5-6 years he was rumored to be asking for...). I will feel a lot better if the Twins add one more defense first outfielder (or if Rosario breaks out in 2015 and ends up playing in the field a lot with great defense).
  12. I've read that San Diego is also still in the running for Upton. . . will be interesting to see who offers the best deal, or if Atlanta decides to wait.
  13. Yankees get Chase Headley on a 4 year deal, the number of FA options at 3rd are pretty much all gone. Jed Lowrie or Asdrubal Cabrera could move if needed...
  14. His first year for the Fort Myers Miracle he was 21 in 2012
  15. Gibson, Arcia, May, Escobar, Rosario, and Santana : GAMERS Arcia, Hicks, Herrmann, and Hunter : AHH! Pelfrey, Pressley, Fien, and Thielbar : PPFT!
  16. So, The Orioles were unable/unwiling to retain Markakis, Nelson Cruz, and Delmon - and they missed out on Melky Cabrera and Torii Hunter. They have to be in the market to sign Alex Rios and/or Colby Rasmus now, right?
  17. how about Mauer, Vargas, Pinto, and Sano as "the MVPS" ?
  18. Ervin Santana is an excellent consolation prize for the Twins after missing out on Lester, Scherzer, and Shields. Especially considering Santana has a shorter and cheaper contract than those guys. The comparisons to Nolasco just makes Ricky look better to me... I'm hoping that he regresses (in a positive direction) to the mean, too! Maybe they'll still go after Brett Anderson - the more the merrier! Oh, and an outfielder!
  19. Speaking of DH's - Kendrys Morales got a 2 year deal from Kansas City...
  20. The Cardinals have picked up their new DH, Mark Reynolds! Oh, wait. I guess they'll use him as a bench bat and 1B...
  21. I mean, compared to a team that lost 90+ games 4 years in a row, sure the White Sox look pretty good. I was responding more to the tenor of comments saying that Sox were now the favorites to win the division and/or serious playoff contenders this year. I don't think they have done enough yet this offseason, and we haven't seen what the rest of the league will do yet. But if there's comparisons to be made: I think Plouffe is better than Gillaspie, both now and when Plouffe was Gillaspie's age. I'd take Plouffe over him. Also, I'd take Sano over Gillaspie for the next decade or two. I'd take Dozier over the current hole at 2B in Chicago, too. I think both outfield corners in Chicago are suspect. Viciedo and Avisail Garcia are both trouble. The Twins can't really talk in that department, though, so I won't belabor that point. Catching... ? Tyler Flowers and Nieto? I'd honestly rather have Kurt Suzuki and Josmil Pinto. If Molitor would let Pinto have more playing time in 2015 than Gardy was giving him, I like what the Twins have even more. The Sox have a better rotation, no argument from me there. The bullpens I think will depend on what the Twins do in the offseason and how fast the 2013 and 2014 draft class moves up.
  22. I know I wouldn't trade stadiums with the Sox!
  23. In some cases I also take solace in the fact that the mystery team rarely wins the bidding...
  24. 3/$42MM plus a draft pick for Liriano... I don't think the Twins would be going for that.
  25. Yes - the middle ground rhymes with "The Faint Bluest Dardanelles" I think the difference between the Sox and Twins means that in order to be competitive any time soon, the White sox had no choice but to make large FA signings and trade whatever prospects they think they can spare. The Twins have been slowly (re)building the farm and as a result, there's less urgency in the front office to make a big reach now. The Twins will wait for the next crop prospects to arrive and then contend for a few seasons before starting over. The owner makes money, the fans have something to hope for, almost everyone is happy.
