  1. Bonus points will be awarded if a person picks the first time Torii Hunter plays CF for a couple days and doesn't miss too much.
  2. Food for thought: Torii's most recent start in CF was on Thursday May 19th, 2011 : http://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/SEA/SEA201105190.shtml It was a "get away" day game before a trip from Seattle back home to Anaheim. Torii started in RF the game before and the game after. After the Twins signed Torii, Terry Ryan had this to say:
  3. Hi Twins Daily! In another thread I wondered aloud how long it would be before Torii Hunter found himself starting a game in CF for the Twins. Maybe someone gets injured? Maybe Schafer and Hicks prove completely ineffective at the plate? Maybe Molitor decides to go with experience? Who knows? I thought it might be fun to make it a contest. To participate in the contest, just reply in the thread with a calendar date (April 1st, May 15th, etc.) that you think will be Torii's first regular season start in Center Field in 2015. 2015 Twins Schedule begins April 6th in Detroit The Winner will be the guess closest to the actual date, whether Torii's first CF start is before or after the guess. If there's a tie, all correct guesses win. The Prize (no real monetary value): A selection of baseball cards from your favorite team! (we can hash out details via Private Message) Disclaimer: This contest is just for fun! All prizes are provided by me, no sponsorship or endorsement from Twins Daily is implied (though I did make sure the contest was not breaking any forum rules).
  4. Yeah - would that be ok? To offer to mail a stack of cards to the winner? The monetary value would really just be postage.
  5. I think with the structure of this contract he's either going to beat out somebody for an opening day spot in the pen, or he's going to be looking to latch on somewhere else.
  6. What about Bobby Grich and Lou Whitaker? Hopefully those two get a little love from a veteran's committee in the future. They both had higher fangraphs and bref WAR totals than Biggio.
  7. The deal includes an invite to Spring Training - so he'll get at least an audition for the major league roster.
  8. Hello! A thread about the CF situation has prompted a question about when Torii Hunter will make his first start in CF in 2015. If I wanted to start an unofficial contest to guess the date in a new thread, would that be kosher? Any disclaimers needed to have a contest on Twins Daily?
  9. Hmm. I could offer a nice stack of worthless cardboard awesome baseball cards to the winner...
  10. Twins sign Blaine Boyer RHP to a minor league deal (with a spring Training invite) http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2015/01/twins-sign-blaine-boyer-to-minor-league-deal.html
  11. The interesting thing to me about Biggio is that he excelled at three different up the middle positions - starting as a catcher, then 2B, and also he spent a full season in CF.
  12. I could see late May - facing a tough lefty, Hicks has hit 0 for his last 15 ... So Hunter in CF, Arcia in RF and Nuñez in LF. Vomit. Or... Maybe 'Shuga Shane' gets called up. Or... maybe they add another, different, outfielder and send Hicks down to AAA?
  13. Yankees signed Stephen Drew - 1 year deal $5MM (up to $7MM if he meets certain criteria)
  14. So the elephant in the room is this: how long before the Twins play a game with Torii Hunter in CF?
  15. I'm picturing Big Pelf coming to camp with un gigante moustache and trying to convince everybody that he's a different guy. ¿Quién es Mike? Me llamo Miguel. related to this thread: I would enjoy Johan getting a minor league deal with ST invite, then coming up to the Twins to make a couple bullpen appearances towards the end of the year and retiring as a Twin. I think any larger committment would be a "Willie Mays falling down in the outfield" situation.
  16. I do think Nomar is a borderline candidate, but not quite a HOFer. I don't know if it is better to get a few votes that first year and be done (like Lou Whitaker, or this year with Carlos Delgado) or spend 10-15 years getting some support but falling well short each year (like Alan Trammell or Jack Morris).
  17. Carlos Beltran played a few years back when he was still in his prime. It's more common for a great player to go home to play winter ball than for a star to go to another country to play what amounts to an exhibition. Bobby Abreu played winter ball the year before he retired to show MLB teams he could still play. I think Arcia is just on the cusp of "established" even though he's been with the Twins for awhile now. He's still very young.
  18. Kind of surprised that Nomar got enough votes to stay on the ballot for another year. Mattingly will be mercifully dropped, next year will be Trammell's last time, two years for Lee Smith - to me that's another way that a logjam is cleared. Mattingly got 50 votes this year.
  19. Neat - it's rare that the writers elect that many players in one election, but that ballot was STACKED.
  20. Annoucement is coming very soon - early polling shows Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, and John Smoltz are in - maybe Biggio too. Piazza may fall just short.
  21. JB's point about Arcia's nagging injuries is a good one - I lean towards saying let him play, but I guess if sitting him will help him heal fully, that will be better for Arcia and for the Twins in the long run. If letting him rest will improve his defense at all . . . then yes, rest!
  22. There's always risk of injury (or further injury) for players playing in the winter leagues, and Spring Training is going to be here very soon, but I think if Arcia feels like he can play, he should. No substitute for a playoff atmosphere, it's good experience for a guy that hopefully will be getting some playoff at bats in the majors in the next few years.
  23. I have been going to a lot of sportscard shows in the last year, and I did hear that steps were taken to improve the lighting situation for the vendors. It was a big complaint and a few of the card vendors I know ended up deciding to go back this year based on promises of better conditions this time. Are concessions stands open? Can I get a Tony O Cubano?
  24. Bonifacio is definitely an improvement over the 25th Man. I would have liked Bonifacio over Nuñez for the Twins, for instance. It's possible that Bonifacio ends up the starting 2B for Chicago this season, which I guess could be better than the options they currently have. I don't think he's good enough with the bat to be a regular starter - his best role would be as a super sub, giving various starters days off throughout the year. It could be 100 games or more played, but all over the field. It would be great if Escobar could handle an outfield corner, Super-sub would really be an ideal role for him given the log-jam in the Twins' infield right now. Being competent in the OF is really the best asset that Bonifacio brings to the table.
  25. The White Sox have been trying to trade Viciedo ever since they added Melky Cabrera, no one has bit yet. Bonifacio brings versatility, however I think Eduardo Escobar was a slightly better hitter last year, which isn't saying too much for Bonifacio. I like this move for Chicago because I don't think Bonifacio is very good.
