  1. I'd rather they go after Jake Peavy if they want a former SF Giants pitcher that is old.
  2. Bold prediction - Josmil Pinto traded to Texas Rangers for... Somebody?!? If the Twins have already traded Plouffe, maybe they can finally acquire Adrian Beltre, like they should have a long time ago...
  3. The one-year-make-good-deal looked promising before the Twins crippled their outfield defense - If I were Brett Anderson, I'd be looking to get someone with a better defense to sign me. Also, Target Field was originally thought to be a pitcher's park, but it seems to have normalized a bit. It's not really that appealing on a one year deal, unless a guy thinks he can be Phil Hughes 2.0 . . .
  4. Saunders has already been traded to Toronto for J.A. Happ
  5. I stand by my Lew Ford joke/prediction. Shocking trade - Arcia gets moved for pitching Shocking trade #2 - two of the prospects in the #5 - #10 range (and someone else!) are packaged for Justin Upton Less shocking - Plouffe gets moved for more pitching Twins Acquire Peter Bourjos for Brian Duensing (huh, that's what that feels like to type that) Twins Sign Justin Masterson
  6. The MLB Winter Meetings start Sunday evening and run through next Thursday. There's always a lot of rumors and talk about players moving from one team to another, and free agents added. What moves do the Twins need to make for the trip to San Diego to be considered a success? By this time next week, will the Twins have added more pitching? Some more OF Defense? Early Rumors have the Twins interested in Ryan Vogelsong - will it be a successful week if that rumor doesn't come to pass? Which Twins are most likely to be former Twins by next Thursday?
  7. It's up to Molitor and Neil Allen to say that now. Terry Ryan is going most likely sign one or two more starters this offseason. It'll be up to the pitching coach and the Manager to determine playing time. maybe they'll go with a six-man rotation? Wouldn't that be bonkers?
  8. The only reason I think Santana would still be in play is that Ryan allegedly offered him a 3yr deal last Jan/Feb after the Twins had already signed Nolasco and Hughes and re-signed Pelfrey. This year Milone is an addition, but otherwise, it's essentially all the same guys one year older. One would hope that a year later May and Meyer would have cemented a place in the rotation but I think Ryan would rather have them force the issue by beating out the competition in Spring Training.
  9. Except the ranking is pretty close between Trout and guys much "higher" on the list. Just take 2014. Trout had a -9 for Defensive Runs Saved - that's compared to the "Average" CF. "Average" is skewed by how good Juan Lagares was. The worst CF was more than twice as bad. Ben Revere had -18 DRS at the 2nd worst. There were lots of CF inbetween -5 and -9 DRS, so for those guys there are other ways to see who breaks away from the pack. Hunter had -18 Defensive Runs Saved in RF in 2014. That's really, really bad. And yes, it is just one statistic out of many that measure defense. It is unfair to Hunter to say that he is a bad RF using only his -18 DRS in '14 and -10 DRS in '13. But in Hunter's case, pretty much all of the metrics and the fan scouting reports agree that he is slow to the ball, and doesn't make as many plays that pretty much every other RF makes. I agree that using just DRS is insufficient. Alone it doesn't tell the whole story, but it is a fairly eye-popping piece of the larger argument.
  10. Ryan has been saying in pretty much every interview that the Twins need more starting pitching. The rotation may be full, but I get the sense that it could get a lot more crowded by Spring Training. I think Ryan's highest cost target is probably Ervin Santana. I think the chances that Ryan signs a bigger name will depend on how long it takes for Lester and Scherzer to sign, because he's pretty much stated that he's "waiting for the market to develop"... I don't really understand the logic there, but I'm not a GM. Brett Anderson, Justin Masterson, Brandon McCarthy, Edinson Volquez, Frankie, Ervin Santana are probably the best Twins fans can hope for this offseason.
  11. I think the player playing CF for the Twins in 2015 is going to get a lot of exercise. For his sake, I hope he's fast!
  12. Ranking 51st out of 51 is still bad though, as flawed as the metrics may be. Say he should have been 45th or even 40th - That doesn't really make the move much better in my mind. You don't improve your defense by adding the statistically worst defender in the league. I accept that I am not an expert; I'm only casually knowledgeable about scouting and defensive stats - but the implication that Torii will be fine because he looked good in the games against the Twins does not inspire much confidence in me. I trust Terry Ryan that he's doing what is (in his opinion) the best for the short-term and long-term future of the Twins. I just don't see how the dots connect on defense yet.
  13. Hunter could reach Kent-like offensive numbers, but I don't think that will be enough for him to be inducted. Hunter I think would have to be better than Kent and closer to some of the CF'ers in the HOF: http://www.baseball-reference.com/leaders/jaws_CF.shtml if he can rack up another 5-10 WAR and get his career OPS+ up 5-10 points, I think he's right up there with the current CF'ers in the Hall - but that's a pretty tall order.
  14. Edgar was blocked by Jim Presley at 3rd (a guy that was a 24 yr old All-Star in 1986, decent in 87 and 88), Alvin Davis at 1st, and Ken Phelps at DH. I wouldn't call the Mariners stacked at Corner infield at the time, but they already had relatively productive options at each position. Trading Phelps to NY to get Buhner also helped clear the logjam for Edgar. And Jim Presley fell off pretty sharply starting in 89, which helped get Edgar in the lineup regularly.
  15. Maybe for the bullpen - he can have Swarzak's spot. (Pelfrey should have Swarzak's spot, though.)
  16. Agree on all points - If Edgar doesn't make it in via the sportswriter's votes, I think the veteran's committee will elect him when the time comes. Right now the ballot is so crowded, it will be hard for some deserving candidates to stay on the ballot. A person could vote for the maximum 10 candidates, omit the guys that admitted or tested positive for PEDs, and still have Edgar Martinez on the outside looking in. I'm hoping this year at least 4 players are inducted, if nothing else to make room for some other guys to get votes. I think Biggio, Pedro, Randy Johnson are pretty much locks to get in this year. There are plenty of other guys already on the ballot that deserve it, too.
  17. yes - Baines would have a much stronger HOF case if he put up his numbers while also playing in the field. Same issue with Edgar Martinez. Molitor was a hard sell for some given the time he spent as a DH, but he had the magical 3,000 hits without the PED association that will keep Palmeiro out indefnitely. Dawson had more time in the OF (including his prime years in CF). I think Steve Finley is probably a closer comp to Torii, though Torii had a bit more HR power.
  18. Voters would assume PED use and not vote for the guy...
  19. I like this signing more than the Hunter signing.
  20. Baines might make it in as a veteran's committee nominee, but out of the guys listed I think that's it. Dawson had a longer career, a higher peak, an MVP, a Rookie of the Year award, over 400 HR + 300 SB. Dawson was quite a bit more HOF worthy than Hunter's case. Rice is a different story, though he too had an MVP award, had a higher peak than Torii, and playing in Boston didn't hurt his visibility among voters. Rice was a tough interview, and a bit of a jerk to the media, but the consensus was that he was one of the top hitters of his era. Dawson and Rice had seemingly weak HOF cases compared to their OF HOF peers. I think Hunter would have to surpass them in the higher scoring environment of the 00's to make much of a case. If Hunter plays after this season, there's room for a conversation, but I don't see a situation in which he gets even close to the final career numbers of Dawson. I think Hunter would probably need to play 4 more seasons at minimum to make a compelling case for Cooperstown.
  21. I like the part where Terry Ryan says "I'm not going to say that a lot [of the defensive metrics] aren't accurate . . but a lot of them aren't accurate either." *slow clap*. We don't care what the score is, we're champions on the inside. Surely one of only two players in the league that was WORSE than the Twins' RF will somehow improve the defense in RF.
  22. Don't forget 4th all-time in RBI - Barry Bonds. I'm not sure if there is a floor anymore for RBI to get automatic induction. Jeff Kent has over 1500 RBI, I don't hear many people going crazy for him to be in the HOF. Gary Sheffield, Manny Ramirez, Sammy Sosa, A-Rod, Palmeiro all pass that hurdle easily, but I think they will all find it hard to meet the voters' demands. Give Torii Hunter 150 more RBI and he's still got fewer than Rusty Staub, Dave Parker, Jeff Kent, Vlad Guerrero, etc. Give him 200 more hits and he's short of Garret Anderson, Steve Finley, Luis Gonzalez, Steve Garvey, Julio Franco, Willie Davis, etc. Give him 50 more homers and he's short of Dale Murphy, Craig Nettles, Joe Carter, Andres Galarraga, Baines, Dwight Evans, etc. Give him 100 more stolen bases and he's short of Mike Cameron, Edgar Renteria, Steve Finley, Larry Bowa, and lots of other players... He has had a good combo of power, speed, and until recently, defense. I think he still would have a long way to go to be HOF level.
  23. that's from the Hunter for HOF thread - it got me thinking, though.... Speaking of Radke, I thought he had a case for having his number retired by the Twins. Speaking of Hunter, does his time away from the Twins hurt his chances of having his # retired? Will anyone from his generation get theirs retired? I think Mauer is probably a lock for that when he retires, but is anyone else deserving? Maybe they could retire the number #2002 as an homage to the team surviving contraction and to honor that group for their playoff run. Will Gardy's # be retired?
  24. I bet Seattle would like that to be the case...
