  1. To be fair to the Twins hitters, when they're up they're not hitting against Jason Marquis.
  2. Wow, look at that lineup. I think Gardy may have been replicated by alien pod people.
  3. "(Doumit's) defense at catcher is better than we had heard." You're absolutely wrong here, John. Doumit's defense at catcher has been terrible.
  4. Batting average is right there - .286. His .387 SLG means he hasn't hit many doubles or home runs.
  5. Since I was at that atrocity that was the Thursday night game, I've come to the conclusion that Doumit is a terrible defensive catcher. It's not just losing pop-ups and not thinking to look behind him for the ball - he lunges at pitches close to the corners of the plate, making it difficult for umpires to call them strikes. He's no more a catcher than Matt LeCroy was.
  6. I think I'm going to start calling Diamond "Big Spot Scott".
  7. And I'd never say that Gardy is a bad manager, but when I hear things like "Gardy gets the most out of average players" I don't think that gives enough credit to the players themselves. The early 2000's Twins may not have been the most talented bunch, but they were rock-solid fundamentally, and that has more to do with their work ethic than Gardy's instruction, IMO.
  8. I agree that a manager's influence on the team is, in most cases, negligible. However, that also means that much of the praise and acclaim that Gardy has received has been largely unearned.
  9. The correct answer is both - Mauer is hurt, AND he's slumping.
  10. Perhaps I'm just being far too long-winded in my posts, but I've noticed that often when the text wraps from one line to the next, after I've made the post the last word of the line gets doubled up and repeated at the beginning of the next line.
  11. I'm confounded by the Twins' lack of advancement for Slama. Maybe he's not a world-beater, but they haven't exactly had a stellar bullpen recently. I'm surprised he didn't latch on with another team when the Twins dropped him from the 40-man.
  12. This is what I would do, and considering the Twins just sent down an infielder to call up an outfielder, it's what I suspect Gardy will do. There's really no reason to play Plouffe in the outfield now.
  13. Actually he did have a choice - pass on Maloney and sign a different journeyman pitcher to a minor league deal. For some reason Smith liked Maloney enough to take that risk.
  14. With another outfielder coming up, I would imagine that Plouffe will have the opportunity to play most of the time at 3B.
  15. The best starting pitching performance of the year came from the guy who was 7 or maybe 8 on the SP depth chart. Don't expect Diamond to be dominant, but at the very least he pitched with more confidence than we've seen out of Liriano and Hendriks. I like Diamond, but we also liked Duensing as a starter as well until he got overexposed. I can see why Gardy liked what he saw out of Dozier, he seems to position himself well and has good fielding instincts. I expect his hitting to come back to earth, though.
  16. The Twins are rippable on many fronts, but the "weak division" argument isn't one of them. What are they supposed to do, move to the east coast? The Central has not been as strong as the other AL divisions during the Twins run, but the Twins can't be faulted for winning games against teams they're supposed to beat.
  17. The rap on Dozier has been that his defense might not stick at short. Through two games he looks pretty good there. Scott Diamond = Twins MVP.
  18. Obviously Parmelee should have caught that ball, it was right there. But that's the reason that a balk is against the rules, so that a pitcher can't deke the runner by stepping towards home while throwing to first. And Perkins stepped a little too far towards home.
  19. Parmelee's on the bench as punishment for not catching that throw to first from Perkins. A throw which looked an awful lot like a balk to me.
  20. It also stings because the Twins were just built fancy new digs at taxpayer expense and don't have a major league quality team to put there. Some fans might feel they were sold a bill of goods when they were told the Twins would be more competitive with a ballpark that could draw in more revenue.
  21. I think this is where I disagree with you. Gardenhire was a part of those winning teams, sure, but there's a myriad of players you should also be thanking for winning divisions. Gardy himself didn't win divisions, just as Gardy himself didn't lose in the playoffs. Either the manager has something to do with the outcome of the game, or he doesn't. And if he doesn't, then anybody can manage a playoff team.
  22. New manager Redmond, new hitting coach Brunansky, and new pitching coach Cuellar.
  23. Greinke's numbers are fairly comparable to Baker's, except for one important one - innings pitched.
  24. The Twins like Greinke. He's been on their radar a couple of times before, so if the Twins were a pitcher away, it wouldn't surprise me to see them go after him, especially with Baker probably done as a Twin. But the Twins aren't one pitcher away, so I doubt they'll take the free agent route for starters in 2013.
