  1. That wasn't your question but feel free to keep moving the target. The point was there are plenty of coaches/managers who have held tenure without having the good fortune of finding the Holy Grail, reason being they were quality people and by all other measures successful. The same could be said for many players. For the record I'm not saying Gardy should stay, change inevitably happens, as it should. If one of the main arguements for firing him is that he has never delivered a championship, then I say that's pretty short sighted and too convenient.
  2. Jerry Sloan, Lindy Ruff, Andy Reid, Bo Schembechler, Chuck Knox, Dan Reeves, Marv Levy, .......some guy with the last name Grant.
  3. I agree with this 100%, with what it takes to make the majors and considering the hierarchical structure at the major league level, I would think as a young player you do everything to get your manager to love you, not tune him out, that's pretty counterproductive, not to mention a pretty big gamble that he'll be gone before you are.
  4. I'll agree mostly with that but there is a lot of luck involved, particularly past the first round.
  5. I'd like to know which upside arms Ryan passed up on in his first stint as GM that turned into top of the rotation starters. Anyone know?
  6. And being the richest club in the sporting universe has nothing to do with that.
  7. http://freesmileyface.net/smiley/transports/police-car-004.gif.....now you've done it Luke.
  8. I have no problem with your post, you're entitled to it and it's pretty understandable after the last couple of years. I disagee with now being the time to do it, especially in Ryan's case, after this year all bets are off for Gardy, although this team is not assembled to accomplish much, which may give him another opportunity, rightly or wrongly. Ryan isn't going anywhere anytime soon. I think calling them blind mice may have been a bit over the top, I get the sense that's where people didn't take you too seriously.
  9. This should be a disclaimer for any future positive posts regarding Kevin Correia.
  10. Valencia had likely patted himself on the back enough, Gardy didn't feel like he needed to.
  11. I listen to a lot of them, I guess it depends on your interpretation. There's a difference between throwing guys under the bus and just being honest, developing a good relationship doesn't mean you have to stick your head in the sand and treat everyone with kid gloves.
  12. http://www.sherv.net/cm/emoticons/horror/chainsaw-smiley-emoticon.gif..........why?
  13. Sometimes you have to question who those players are and whether they matter or not. I don't recall Gardy singling out many guys and throwing them under the bus, some young players have issues with accountability and accepting some direction, Danny Valencia pops to mind. Besides I was just relaying a perception of Gardy from a guy who has been in MLB clubhouses before, and played for a number of managers. I personally can't testify to any of it, none of us can really.
  14. There is a story in R.A. Dickey's book that is the perfect example of the two sides to Gardy. He recounts a game he entered in relief with the game tied and the bases loaded and Gardy advises him not to throw his knuckleball because he's afraid Mauer might miss it, so he tells Dickey to stick with his fastball (86 mph) and his slider (doesn't throw one), Dickey looks at him as if he's from Mars, the knuckleball had been working for him and it's his out pitch. He walks the first batter on 9 fastballs and gives up another single on a fastball before he and Mauer say f**k it and retire two of the next three batters with knuckleballs. They lost the game. The other half of the story is the amazement Dickey expresses when Gardy comes up to him after the game and apologized for doing that to him and takes the blame. His point is that although Gardy messed up tactically, he owned it and didn't back away from it, he states that this is partly what makes Gardy such a good manager of people and why his players like playing for him so much. It's a pretty good insight into the "what the hell were you thinking" Gardy, but also into the one that is likely responsible for why he's been around so long.
  15. He's trimmed his mustache a bit, makes him look totally different.
  16. Completely agree, having read my post again, I was quite deserving of some derision. I have to re-evaluate my late night offerings, if you're too tired to provide some context, you probably should just log off and go to bed.
  17. There's some classics on here, my personal fave is the guy setting himself on fire. I'm waiting until the season starts to use it....or until Lightfoot posts something again. http://www.sherv.net/fighting-emoticons.html
  18. Now hold on a minute here, Snepp is no mere moderator, he's a super moderator, let's get it right. Having cleared that up, there was really nothing to moderate, Fro's comment was pointless (maybe mine was too, if you choose the simpleton interpretation), but it wasn't inappropriate. Let's not turn into the mod police.
  19. Well, thanks for that but I'm really just saying it's not like he has that far to go for this to work out. His deficiencies at the plate are minor, not as if he has to re-tool his whole swing or develop one and he just needs to be acceptable in the field, not be an all-star for everyone to be quite happy. Anyway, speaking of tools..... http://www.sherv.net/cm/emoticons/fighting/kick-in-the-balls.gif
  20. Plouffe just needs to improve his approach and discipline at the plate, make the plays he's expected to at 3rd and the rest will follow. I think he'll be fine.
  21. Funny thing is you're both right. We don't need a 3rd catcher, but if we're forced to accept one, we could do a whole lot better than Butera. I'm exhausted on this one, it's like punching yourself in the face.
  22. At the end of the day these are my sentiments exactly, well stated.
  23. Which would make 31 years between appearances, reach for the stars!!
  24. With all due respect I think you're way off base (no pun intended). I think Gardy is a competitor, question his methods sure, but not caring about winning and being happy with getting close doesn't fit the description of any professional athletes or coaches.
  25. You're right, quitting is the best course of action. http://www.sherv.net/cm/emoticons/fighting/beating-head-against-the-wall.gif
