Kyle Gibson, Andrew Albers and consistency
Riverbrian replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I am made of sand... I get stared at all the time with heads tilted slightly and a blank look. It's because of that dryness. For full disclosure: I want to see Gibson and I want to see him now. Mostly I admit for the shiny new toy reason but I do think he's due for a look and I do think facing Prince Fielder would be a great experience for his development and he needs to be good for us. Walters: Is pitching well and he has my full support as long as he is. He will be a great story if he keeps it up. I like seeing pitchers get rewarded for working on getting better. Even older guys. Deduno: I'm a huge fan... I want him to stay a Twin for a long time. Too much talent and Entertainment. I'm crazy but I think that Sam can be a top of the rotation guy with a little mechanics adjustment. Correia: He ain't going anywhere... He's got a contract for next year and he's pitching well. He's one of us now. Diamond: Has been inconsistent but he doesn't deserve to be sent down to experiment with someone unproven. Pelfrey: He's the guy to move for Gibson but he's been a little better and may be getting better and his contract will give him a little rope. However... He hasn't been very good... I wanted Pelfrey this past off season... I admit it... But personally... I don't think that he has worked out and... Despite the improvement in numbers latelly... I'm still not seeing the command that he needs to say I'm comfortable yet. Gibson: I want to see him but he comes with no gaurentee and right now... The current 5 man rotation has put together some decent starts and is looking OK for now. Albers... I know nothing about him... Hope he is a solid option when he gets his chance. I'll remain patient... Cuz an injury or implosion is always around the corner.- 119 replies

I don't know if this fits the thread but I have a story and I feel like telling it. True Story from about 20 years ago: I was watching a American Legion Tournament Game in East Grand Forks. Thief River Falls vs Fergus Falls. It was a windy windy day... Blowing straight across Left Field to Right Field. I was sitting along the 1st base line on the top row of an aluminum portable bleacher. A gust wind came up so strong that it blew my hat off and sent it rolling behind me about 15 yards. I jumped off the bleacher to go after my hat and a Gentlemen who was older than me was walking past... This stranger ran to my hat to grab it... He didn't walk he actually kind of hustled after it so it didn't get away further. He collected my hat and walked toward me and when he got about 5 feet from me... He decided to toss it to me... Another gust of wind came up and my hat flew backwards again... Even further than it originally was... This Gentlemen... Turned around and ran after my hat again... Collected it and this time walked up to me and handed it to me. Being the funny guy that I am... I went for the joke that came into my head... I said to him "You'll never make the major leagues with an arm like that" He laughed and walked away. I didn't know who this stranger was when I said... "You'll never make the major leagues with an arm like that" Later on... He walked past again... and being the funny guy that I am... I looked at him and put both hands on my hat to let him know that I was securing it. That's when I noticed who he was. It was Dave Goltz... He was watching his son play for Fergus Falls. I thought I was making the "Never make it to the major leagues" joke to a random run of the mill guy. The fact that it was Dave Goltz and I didn't know it was Dave Goltz made this meh joke... Hilarious. Anyway... It kind of applies to this thread... Because the Baseball Player Dave Goltz could have walked past my hat and said "not my problem"... I thought he was a nice guy for hustling after it and not keeping it himself after getting it.

I watched the Video you provided... Thanks for that BTW... Anyway... I watched the Video and the thought that invades my skull is this... Holy Crap does he look LARGE from a long ways away. Pitchers pitching him carefully is boring for us because we want video game numbers from our potential video game player. However... Pitchers pitching him carefully is great for his development. A Power hitter of Sano's ability with added patience at the plate will produce an amazing MLB baseball player. Every pitchers pitch that he lays off is a lesson in discipline. If he is as good as they say... The MLB Pitchers won't be giving him much either eventually. In my opinion... Your theory of protecting him at the plate is a great idea but it's premature. We can worry about protecting him at the plate in Minnesota. For Now... Let him work on a little plate discipline. Did I mention that he looks large... lol... I got dreams of 40 plus homers in the Bigs.

LOL... Jokin... "Would have been given the chance to be a solid contributor with the Orioles" is much different than your original post which stated "A safe bet to be a solid contributor with the Orioles". After that confusion... you will have to forgive my last paragraph. A last paragraph that was meant to be dry humor BTW. The Orioles were willing to push younger guys through because they had to... Just like the Twins had to push Hendriks through last year. The Twins also had to push DeVries, Deduno and Walters through last year as well. Necessity is the mother of promotion and my contention is that I would give the ball to Walters again because a 3.23 doesn't scream necessity to me. It's screams... Thank You... This is what we need. Now if the argument is Pelfrey!!! I'm all ears. Walters... I'm giving him the ball until he shows he can't do it. The guy has spent many years working for this chance and he isn't blowing that chance... I'm not prying the ball out of the hands of a pitcher that is performing for a guy who might perform better.- 119 replies

I want to be clear that I'm not arguing against a Gibson Call Up... I'm dying to see him pitch and I have high hopes for him. I like shiny new toys like everyone else. However, as for your examples... Gausman has a 7.66 ERA in 24.2 Innings thus Far in Baltimore... He's a Tide Now. Walters has produced a 3.23 ERA in 30 innings thus far. Now... I personally would take Gausman over Walters for the long term. Now... If I want to win a game tomorrow... I'm going with Walters because he has been pitching decently in the majors right now while Gausman hasn't. Dylan Bundy has thrown 1.2 innings in the majors. He's the top prospect in baseball. I don't see how he applies. Machado has been great... Ian Stewart for example was a black hole. But let's forget about Ian Stewart... if you want to talk about Orioles only... Let's broaden the Orioles conversation to include... Zach Britton, Mike Matusz, and Jake Arrieta. These guys got cups of coffee in the big leagues... These guys were all highly ranked prospects (higher ranked than Gibson) that didn't walk in the door and hang zero's and they still haven't really hung zero's. Only Chris Tillman has finally started to show something and that started last year after 3 years of 5 plus ERA's. Tillman currently has a 3.61 ERA and that is higher than what PJ has produced this year. Meanwhile the Orioles along with Tillman are throwing a rotation of: Jason Hammel... Failed Colorado starter who at age 29 out of nowhere IMPROVED to a 3.43 in 2012... Miguel Gonzalez... He was PJ Walters last year... Finally got a starting job at Age 28 last year and pitched decently enough to get a starting rotation job... Again... at age 28. Freddy Garcia... AGE 92... And here comes the 4th Attempt at Zach Britton to round the rotation out. To me it looks like the Orioles would grab Walters and his 3.23 the very second he hits the waiver wire because we had to release him and his 3.23 to make room for Gibson and the Orioles will grab him so they don't have to throw Gausman and Bundy out of necessity. To me the Orioles are a prime example of using players like Walters not an example of handing out cups of coffee successfully but that's just how I see it. Again... I want to be clear that I'm not against a Gibson call up... But... I won't bet against Gibson and I won't bet on him but I will sit back comfortably and watch you make the safe bet that Gibson could be a solid contributor right now.- 119 replies

Quite possible... If you assume that players are working on things... You also have to assume that working on things can lead to solving things and then assume that they can get better.- 119 replies

When it comes to Walters... I find myself thinking the same way. I never expected much out of him so I struggle to shake that expectation. However... As an organization doesn't there have to be a reward system. If a guy throws 30 innings and his ERA is at 3.23. Don't you let him take the ball again as opposed to saying... Good job so far but you are going to suck tomorrow so we are cutting you loose. I don't know... But I think I would give him the ball again.- 119 replies

I think Deduno has talent. I think Diamond has a little cred from last year. I think Correia has rope from his contract and he has done well. I think Walters is performing right now. I think Pelfrey has rope from his contract. Gibson will be up when one of those 5 things are not true anymore or when someone is injured. I can't wait to see him pitch but currently... At this moment at least... Those 5 pitchers have been a decent rotation of late... Its the offense that needs someone Gibson like... right now.

What is the Twins strategy this season?
Riverbrian replied to stringer bell's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
In my opinion... A. The Twins probably think they have Santana in Sano. B. You start making those painful moves of giving up magic beans for beanstalks. You will run out of magic beans and the organization has a farm set up specifically for those magic beans. C. Full Grown beanstalks are expensive and only the Dodgers and Yankees can afford a team full of beanstalks. D. In my opinion... The Twins will never get healthy without the magic beans so give me more magic beans in case 30 of them don't grow.- 127 replies

What is the Twins strategy this season?
Riverbrian replied to stringer bell's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
No argument from me at all... #2 is my opinion. I typically try not to speak for the organization or anyone else. I'll even go as far to say that If... Sano was traded for Shields... My Mr. Positive Disposition would have darkened in a hurry. I would have been more upset over that than I was upset over trading Ramos for Capps. But again... That is just my opinion and while some may disagree with that opinion(which is normal)... I do believe that there are enough TD posters who agree with me... and a large enough group to cause a fairly decent size explosion on these pages.- 127 replies

1. An Ace is something that everyone wants as well. That drives up the price it takes to trade for one. 2. I think TD would have lit up with Negative remarks if we traded Sano for Shields. 3. If we signed Sanchez... Who knows... He looks like a nice signing for Detroit but we still have to have pitchers beyond him and we still have to hit the ball and do all that other stuff. 4. Trading for Shields and Signing Sanchez guarantees nothing for 2013. Just like Signing Greinke and Ryu while trading for A-Gon, Crawford and Hanley didnt guarantee anything for the Dodgers.- 127 replies

What is the Twins strategy this season?
Riverbrian replied to stringer bell's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
I don't know. I find it hard to get the posters on Twins Daily to agree on the value of Trevor Plouffe for example. I can't assume that Friedman thinks like I do or like you do... or assume that Terry Ryan thinks exactly like every GM in baseball. Freewill is tough to navigate.- 127 replies

Did you call Andrew Friedman to determine if he would accept the deal of Span, Gibson, Harrison and Michaels for James Shields? We know that Friedman liked Myers, Odorizzi and Montogmery from the Royals. Its easy to say the Twins should have traded so in so for so in so... But it takes two teams to agree to a deal because they have that freewill thing like everyone else.- 127 replies

I'm 100 Percent sure that Terry Ryan has made some mistakes and I'm 100 percent sure that some things didn't go as planned. I'm also pretty sure that mistakes are part of the job... Just like they are part of my job. I'm also 100 percent sure that I don't know exactly what those Twins mistakes are. I'm just gonna watch the games and hope that 2013 players identify themselves to management as 2014 players. If enough guys look like 2014 players. 2013 will take care of itself.- 127 replies

Its an assumption that 3.30 in AAA means a 4 point something in the majors. Some pitchers have done better and some pitchers have done exactly the same and some pitchers got beaten silly. We will find out about Kyle when he is called up. I look forward to it but I can wait if the current MLB five keep pitching decent.

Some players work on things... If you do work on things... It's possible that you solve things. I'm not saying that is what happened... I'm just saying that sometimes yesterday doesn't mean **** when you are looking at tomorrow.
