  1. Yup, pitcher calls the square dance, IF's earn their pay checks.
  2. I was shocked that peavy was starting to miss with the breaking stuff yet was less worried about missing with that than he was about Hicks hitting his fastball. Hicks has 7 walks and 2 hits. If there's such a thing as an unsustainable sub-.200 OBP, we're seeing it...
  3. Think of it as recycling, which will reduce energy consumption, resulting in less climate change and therefore fewer games postponed due to weather, or something.
  4. More Sano/less Plouffe is a good idea for the thread, but will risk throwing in my take on Plouffsie first: He's nowhere near bad enough that the Twins should rush Sano (or make any other dramatic move) to replace him, and not nearly good enough to consider moving Sano off third if that's his ideal position.
  5. Don't ask questions. Just give in to the power of the tea.
  6. Maybe I missed it, but I didn't see any mention in the thread that an undeniable cost of 'pitch to contact' is its greater dependence on defense. When you raise the overall organizational bar on what's acceptable defensive ability for a position compared to what less defense-dependent franchises will live with, your odds of ending up with less offense from a given position increase.
  7. Of course. How else will they know that Sano is ready? The lack of any proven alternatives is what tells you the kid's time has come. That, and a handful of nice ST at bats. It's a proven formula that's been working since whenever Hicksie improves from historically bad to merely overmatched.
  8. ftfm, I need to be about .1+ to handle the third and fourth outs he makes. Even with the cornucopia of defensive intangibles.
  9. Stat for this ratio? Bourbon Average on Butera in Play, maybe?
  10. 72 hours unclaimed starting from earlier today until he can be sent down, which espn says is "not likely to happen". Still not seeing the problem with having a real CF who can also sub in left and pinch run if Hicks is sent down or Mastro is hurt.
  11. Setting aside the laughable defense that a backup doesn't need to be healthy because he's not 'going to play anyway', Mastro is the only backup to a double A guy batting about zero, so that basically makes him a defacto starter for a franchise with no decent alternative. And you're fine with yet another injured Twin finally landing on the DL after days or weeks of limited availability? That's cool, as long as you've stopped voting. Seriously, man, don't vote. Otherwise you're passing unqualified judgement on professional politicians, just like I'm unqualified to claim that the Twins training/medical staff are pretty bad at identifying and treating injuries.
  12. Well, they were thin entering ST. Benson was a mess last year. Hicks had never played above AA. That left Mastro as the sure thing, and while he had three 500+ PA seasons in the minors, he could hardly be regarded as some sort of Iron Horse. A poster in another thread felt my characterization of the lack of CF depth going into spring training as negligent was extreme and unfair. Tomorrow night, the Twins will take the field with a .044 hitter in center and no non-emergency sub on the roster. Good call on Borbon, but contenders will offer more, and I've heard through multiple reliable TD sources that if the Twins don't get a player like Borbie, then either we don't need him or he was impossible to get...
  13. Yes. They can have Mastrie put on his red shoes and dance the blues for all I care, as long as he wears them on the DL, which is where players who can't play belong. That's like 'invention of the wheel' stuff for the Twins med...ehhh, staff members I can't criticize because I'm not Dr. James Andrews.
  14. Bullpen has hasn't been taxed the last few days, so Swarzak going that long was a surprise. Probably just letting a guy on a roll stay out there, but maybe Gardy wanted to see if he could sustain that level for future reference.
  15. Who's the pitcher wearing Swarzak's jersey? He looks pretty good.
  16. Bert: "I don't like sabermetrics..." "....but it did help me get into the Hall of Fame".
  17. Hicksie finally moved downsie. Did Gardenhire pre-announce this as promised?
  18. That's one valid way to look at it. Another is that he's gone through two reeeeally tough weeks, unnecessarily getting his butt historically handed to him. It just may have hurt his self-confidence a tiny bit more than Gardy's ugly hustle rant. In exchange, the Twins found out that he needs to "work on" exactly what his minor league track record and most publicly available scouting said he would: making contact. How is that a good trade? Bonus questions: Is there any sort of Twins track record for the Hicks AA-to-majors promotion that made you think it would work? If so, please elaborate. Also, do you not believe service time doesn't matter in general, or doesn't matter for Hicks, two weeks into the season?
  19. Thank goodness you're right, or we may have been deprived of Hicksie's 3rd-worst 30 at bat MLB-debut batting average since 1900 (tip o' the cap to oxtung). Now you just need to convince the GMs, players, owners and agents who clearly disagree. Maybe you could call them armchair GMs too; that's what really got me on board.
  20. 113 years of MLB debuts, dating back to when America had 10 miles of paved roads? Pffft. Small sample. Get back to me when someone has the worst debut in two centuries.
  21. +1 on all counts. And Parm has had few enough reps in right, especially in the last 3 years and in Target Field, that his defense there should have more room for improvement than most guys of his age and experience level.
  22. Gardy, snapping at a reporter in PG about moving Hicksie down in the order: "We'll let you know when we're going to do that so you don't have to keep asking every day". At least he managed to avoid dropping the F bomb between "every" and "day".
  23. No, but thanks for trying.
  24. Parmelee's defense continues to be a pleasant surprise.
  25. No worries, even after today the starters will still hold a 5-ish inning per game vs 4 IP pergame edge over the pen in IP. > 50% is good, right?
