  1. Whatever you do, don't walk Adam Dunn, 'cause he's a strikeout machine...
  2. If 75% meant a front-half starter, a 4th starter, and a worthwhile reliever, well, that might still be optimistic, but I could live with that expectation. But yes, I'm afraid they're expecting even more than that.
  3. Told us what? That he'd still be in way over his head in mid-May? We're all happy for Hicksie's big night, and I'm sure I'll take plenty of heat for my timing for this. But anyone who's paying attention to how he's doing knows that he's still utterly helpless against right-handed pitchers (.128/.227/.179). That's horrific. And it's still little better than a coin flip whether he'll start in or out on balls hit in front of him. Again, happy for Hicks that he had the huge game, and I hope and believe he can get it together, preferably at AAA. But the notion that tonight represents even a sliver of validation that the Twins made anything less than a big mistake by having Hicks start the season in the majors and stay despite still being overmatched after 6 weeks... easily a Preposterous Statement of the Year nomination.
  4. They're pitching prospects. Meyer has 37 innings above A ball. May is repeating AA after being bad there last year. Berrios is a 19 year old who was primarily a reliever in rookie ball last year. Gibson has already had TJ surgery. And you're worried that the Twins will find themselves with a glut of good starters if they sign two good free agent pitchers? That's very...well, I guess the nice word is optimistic. My hope is that the Twins front office isn't counting their pitching prospects before they hatch, especially if it means avoiding free agent pitchers in anticipation of every one of their top four pitching prospects turning into above-average MLB starters.
  5. DB: "Hicks is marginally better batting right-handed...". .634 OPS as LHB, .397 as RHB. What sort of split would qualify as 'substantial'?
  6. First hit when you google d-shazzle: I'm thinking avatar.
  7. Dazzle. Worst. Nickname. Ever.
  8. Great stuff; the Richard Solomon reference alone was worth a like.
  9. Having Aaron Hicks develop into a major league ballplayer by improving his game in AAA would be an enormous long-term benefit for the Twins.
  10. For the people who didn't see the game... GIF-story: Ron Gardenhire vs. Aaron Hicks - CBSSports.com
  11. Now if we could just get opposing teams to use only left-handed pitchers when Hicksie is in the lineup.
  12. Dick with the "slow pitch softball swing" call just moments after your post....
  13. If he had spent his career in Boston, it would have already happened.
  14. There's a little bit of a paradox here, isn't there? If the Twins can't swap Benson in for Hicks because Benson would be significantly worse, that would mean Benson is an epically, historically awful ballplayer. And yet you're worried that if Thomas takes Benson's 40 spot and Hicksie is sent down, the Twins should be terrified that another team will claim the epically, historically awful Benson? Also, if Hicks is floundering in the majors just because Gardy still has a crush on Drew Butera, then I hope there's some serious housecleaning ahead, including the GM.
  15. Maybe I'm missing context too. Was it like the infamous baserunning 'hustle' play where Hicks ended up in the right spot between 1st and 2nd on the dropped pop fly to center, instead of being gunned down at 3rd like Nickie 'fake hustle' Punto would've been? And a good call about Kelly. Live exclusively by the 'fundamentals', die by them too. If young players don't live up to Gardy's standards for playing the game right, he will surely lobby the front office to get them off his lawn.
  16. That's why you only use Perk to collect saves...
  17. And Hicksie still hasn't trimmed his sideburns short enough for Gardy... http://comeyoumastersofwar.files.wordpress.com/2010/04/mattingly.png
  18. Didn't see the play, but with Hicksie managing only two walks in the past 10 games (excluding tonight), it's looking more and more that only the Mastro injury is keeping Aaron in the majors.

  20. Top of the order needs to have a couple of guys reach base so that Hicksie gets a chance to keep his 8 game K streak alive. Is defensive sub the halfway house for release from the doghouse?

  22. Pitch count a typo, 89 or 99 maybe? After all, he's not pitching to contact...
  23. Comet has a smoother finish...
  24. Coomer basically admitted that Morneau has been terrible so far, but hey, it's ok because he's "on pace for 100 RBI". Good to know...
