  1. The back-cover bi-fold image was like a gateway drug to origami. And, like everything else in Mad, a parody. Of the Playboy centerfold, of all things. Thanks for posting the pic of Al. He looks like Belushi's smarter, more cynical older brother. RIP, Mr. Feldstein. You made lots of people laugh, which is a pretty great legacy in my book.
  2. While there were varying opinions on where Hicks should have started the year, there was fairly widespread belief that opening the season with Jason Bartlett as his only backup on the 25 man (and Mastro as the only other backup above A ball, for that matter) was a mistake. And it was. Wanting to see the Twins develop and play the kids while expecting them to have a realistic Plan B for when they fail, either temporarily or permanently, isn't a contradiction in any way that I can see.
  3. Dump truck was awesome. The Christmas that I got mine I used it to haul my nine month old cousin from the kitchen into the living room, and dumped him on his back in front of my parents and his.
  4. Same here, although it wouldn't have surprised me if Nolasco had more success initially, an opinion that's difficult to admit at this point. Hughesie's K rate will probably decline some, but so will the ERA if he pitches anything like he has been so far.
  5. LoDarn? Darnie? Darnsie? http://www.milb.com/assets/images/2/8/0/55172280/cuts/POTW_Darnell_qhypkfp5_rldsnmo7.jpg At any rate, if he's good enough for Batavia Downs Casino to name him Player of the Week, he's good enough to take the ball and have a go.
  6. Fair enough. Still have high hopes for Arcia, but will be surprised if Hicks, and to a lesser extent Gibson, contribute significantly to a contending Twins team.
  7. Kenny Wilson's mom dislikes this post, and thinks TheLeviathan owes her a steak dinner.
  8. Morneau's 'rookie season' was about 100 AB's. He OPSed nearly .900 the following year. Cuddyer became a respectable hitter almost immediately, though it took the Twins several years to catch on to that fact. Kubel needed only a half season to shake off the rust of a year lost to injury before he started to hit. It took Santana only 130 innings until he began to pitch at a Cy Young level. There's a difference between pronouncing a prospect a failure and not according him elite status after seeing issues in their game at the major league level. Gibson, Arcia, and Hicks should all be given every chance to prove they belong in the majors, but they're not in the same conversation as Buxton, Meyer, and Sano.
  9. There is nothing remotely sustainable about Gibson's success, based on the peripherals we've seen. The fact that there is even a debate about whether Arcia should rejoin the team or return to AAA when healthy pretty much denies him elite status. Pinto hits well and should be the everyday catcher, but the Twins' concerns about his defense mean they don't consider him elite. And the only thing Meyer and Hicks currently have in common is that they have contracts to play baseball in the Twins organization. Not calling for tar and feathers, but like you mentioned with regard to Rick Anderson, the organization's comfort level with the status quo doesn't seem to jibe with what we're seeing on the field.
  10. Yes, but also in fairness, Pinto is a catcher, and Herrmann is a catcher who can play OF and who is on the roster so Pinto, a catcher, can DH without Mr. Gardenhire collapsing into a terrified, sobbing heap in the dugout at the prospect of "losing the DH", as if one or two lost AB's mean more than going long chunks of the season with what amounts to a 24 man roster.
  11. The whole post was great, but this single sentence sums up the problem. Getting a job, including Twins Assistant General Manager, doesn't mean you can do that job. This fact was reflected upon at some length by Mr. Waturi in the movie Joe Vs. the Volcano... http://table9mutant.files.wordpress.com/2013/01/20130121-085107-am.jpg
  12. And player/personnel decision outcomes aside, this is an organization that publicly prided itself on its disregard for modern metrics the season before it embarked on a three-year, nearly three hundred loss debacle. That's just inviting scrutiny and hindsight, if not outright scorn.
  13. Or he could bat .150, yet still be an offensive upgrade over PFlo.
  14. Seven, eight or nine innings from Nolasco? Be prepared for that not happening? Like being prepared for the possibility of getting wet when thrown into a lake? Maybe I'm missing a subtle humor in that, but based on what we've seen so far, shouldn't the Twins be grateful if he goes five or six without getting Charlie Browned? http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_uFYtT3I_QHY/TLbkz7SCTPI/AAAAAAAAA0c/1tT1-GxWUzI/s1600/Charlie+Brown+Pitching.jpg
  15. Nice hustle, good try, we all feel bad that he got hurt, but it was yet another awkward play for an alleged future Gold Glover. He had no idea where he was. He reacted to hitting the wall like a man hit by a bus in his living room. Aaron Hicks has yet to even resemble a major league ballplayer, at the plate or in the field. At this point the greatest distinction between his Twins career and Tsuyoshi Nishioka's is Hicks' rapidly fading cache of youth-based upside. He still might turn it around, but my guess is that he won't contribute anything significant before Buxton surpasses him. And the hand-wringing over how to replace a .178 hitter is a new low in Twins franchise history.

  17. Macro or spontaneous? Either way, eloquent.

  19. In the hashtag parlance of the day, this...
  20. Kawasaki the only bench player left. When will the FO unleash the genius that is Gardenhire, and allow a roster made up of eight position players, three catchers, a Punto clone, and thirteen pitchers? Never mind.
  21. Check your health care website. Many changes.
  22. Fuld is 32 and just embarrassed Hicks with that catch. So there's that.
  23. Well said. If the Twins were publicly owned, this would be in the opening statement of a prosecution against ownership. Nobody's perfect, you can't win 'em all, etc. But enough is enough.
