  1. Twins will enter the second week of June with the best record in the American League. That ominously improbable event was predicted by: A) The Incans B} The Mayans C) The Aztec D) All of the above Trick question. The real answer is E) That same earthquake movie that imagined The Rock wouldn't look like a panicky woodchuck when shown piloting a helicopter: http://s2.filmwatch.com/media/13/news/1715000/1719862_0.jpg
  2. But what about the Curse of Mays? Jolted Joe was lights out the year before the Twins returned to the playoffs, and then juggled hand grenades the rest of his career. Shouldn't we spare Pelfrey the pitcher equivalent of Home Run Derby-itis?
  3. If Pelfrey settles in as a 4th starter who pitches 180 innings and posts a 4.25-4.50 ERA he would have value to most teams. To the 2011-14 Twins he would be invaluable. Santana is suffering from two things. One is an inaccurate 'phenom' label. DickBert made him out to be some sort of prodigy who managed the baseball equivalent of going directly from half-day kindergarten to middle school, when all he really did was arrive in the majors during his age 24 season. The other problem is that, as a-wan noted, when you drop 100 points of BABIP from your rookie to your sophomore season, well, in the immortal words of David Alan Grier as Maya Angelou giving her hypothetical John McCain inaugural address, "Ain't that a b!tch!". Santana is fun to watch and may still be the best bet in the system for a decent SS in the near future, but good Lord, in his last 50 plate appearances he's looked like a man being attacked by wasps.
  4. As the saying goes, don't look a gift horse or Sarah Jessica Parker in the mouth, or you'll miss out on the good parts. Pelfrey has provided good starts for a team that spent the last four years fielding a rotation that mostly looked like it was selected randomly from the independent leagues. That being said, Pelfrey's success so far this season is very likely the Mystic Lake kind, not the Warren Buffet kind. Pitchers whose K and BB rates are within tin can telephone distance of each other tend to go Joe Mays eventually. "Eventually" as in months, not years. And speaking of Joe, he and Blackburn are pretty good examples of what ends up happening to the money and innings you 'invest' in a long term deal for a vanilla pitch-to-contact guy.
  5. If the Twins front office goes another week with this roster it will have ripened from a faint whiff of "You should just be glad we don't suck again this year" to a fairly strong odor.
  6. The Twins' roster... 'tis a silly place... http://images.fanpop.com/images/image_uploads/Camelot-monty-python-and-the-holy-grail-591549_800_441.jpg
  7. On a fabric-related note, Stauffer hairshirt Twins jerseys are due to go on clearance any day now.
  8. Where is the 'Reluctantly agree' button? "Unsustainable" is too strong of a description of the Twins' record outperforming their overall play, but "very likely unsustainable" is probably not.
  9. Stauffer... The 'uck' is silent. Two errors in the inning, if you include trotting Stauff^@%er out there with the game still within reach.
  10. Only if the front office wants a reenactment of Disco Demolition Night, minus the disco records and the good PR.
  11. L'audace, l'audace, toujours l'audace! http://i.kinja-img.com/gawker-media/image/upload/s--Rbae5wKR--/c_fit,fl_progressive,q_80,w_636/17w40gt7twc10jpg.jpg
  12. Somehow this post leads me to believe that before this season is over some TD game thread regulars will end up meeting downtown during a game to recreate one of the deeds of Fight Club's Project Mayhem...
  13. Hard to say, but I do know We Don't Need Another Hero, what with Escobar heating up in the DH slot... http://www.typicalerin.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/tinaturner_madmaxbeyondthethunderdome.jpg Aaaand... Pannekoeken huis with the save. Now if the Lightning can just hang on to their lead against the Black Hearts, it'll be a trifec... well, two outta three ain't bad. Hmmm. Catchy. Could be a good song title...
  14. Dance of the Upwardly Mobile, by Sherman Hemsley. Note Lionel's disdain. http://l3.yimg.com/bt/api/res/1.2/06MWbhyoEPa8tJ699amBAQ--/YXBwaWQ9eW5ld3M7cT04NQ--/http://media.zenfs.com/en/blogs/thesideshow/JeffersonDance.jpg
  15. Without tonight's tremendous start factored in May sits at an xFIP of 3.84 and a FIP of just 3.11. After tonight his K/BB ratio should clock in at right around 4 to 1. A .352 BABIP has (had, after tonight?) gone a long way toward masking what has otherwise been a terrific start to the season by May.

  17. Well done on the movie ID. And that's an excellent combo. The Game is one of my favorites, but yes, it's almost as spoiler-sensitive as The Sixth Sense. And speaking of the Hudsucker Proxy, might have to name my next male dog Norville. Oooh. Hope that wasn't a spoiler for anyone who hasn't seen The Sixth Sense yet...
  18. An IPad can help pass the time between the second bloop and the blast...
  19. Heh. Thanks, good to be back. On a related note, my next spring vacation from TD will be booked through a reputable travel agent instead of just googling 'cheap resort Baja windsurfing tequila shooters'
  20. Not so much a purpose as just a reason to want to see it, which would be to replace my current future memory of this game ("Crappy road loss to Boston, hope they're better tonight") with "Remember that game in Boston where Mauer played left for an inning and beaned that fan heading down the tunnel behind home plate?"
  21. True, but for the sheer exhilaration of speed I prefer the Blue Jay Turbo Kawasaki... At any rate, in fairness to Kurly Su, his throw to third on the double steal was good, but overall so far this season he looks like what I expected when he signed his extension, which is a guy who you give low end starter money to and yet immediately hope a better player forces him into a backup role.
  22. Only if you promise we'll get to see him airmail a throw home, from the warning track to ohh, let's say about 12 rows back from home plate.
  23. Hughes wasn't sharp but the Ortiz sand wedge off the Monster was an out anywhere else. He also couldn't hold runners to save either his life or Suzuki's arm.
