  1. That was a much more complete stating of my thoughts. From whether it's a "rule" of his, to why it may have happened a lot, to why it maybe shouldn't. Nice work. I've mentioned it elsewhere before, but my preference leans toward batting Mauer 2nd based on the likely lineup, and I cling to some hope that it may happen because it's happened in the past (a smallish, but not insignificant amount). I don't know if I'd go so far as expecting it, but hoping it. And if he doesn't, it wouldn't cause me too much angst, either.
  2. Ben Revere plays what?
  3. Already have. A lot of times (hence the "Haha" in the post you quoted). Once again, though, Morneau came back from the DL playing a different position than he had before going on. And in at least one of the times I mentioned this "compelling reason" I explicitly stated that it wasn't necessarily a reason I agreed with, only one that seems likely to have been the driving factor for those that actually make the decisions.
  4. Everything I've seen implies that Escobar would only be used there from the time of the loss of Mauer and Doumit in a game and the arrival of Butera/Hermann from Rochester. So the terrible idea is essentially exactly the idea you're thinking is the good one. Not to mention, it's not like this is teaching the catcher position to someon who has never done it. He was the White Sox emergency catcher last year from what everyone has said (although he never actually played...which I think would be the hope and plan here, too).
  5. Hmmm...it seems like there must be more reason than that. Almost as if the lineup (or the positions played) may have changed or something...... Haha.
  6. Just for completeness... I never have and likely never will understand the allure of perpetuating untrue myths.
  7. I never have and likely never will understand the allure of perpetuating untrue myths. On topic, can anyone who watched the game give a brief report on any plate appearances where Deduno pitched to Mauer? I was more curious about those than I would have expected.
  8. As a confirmation of my last reply, it was in several articles that yes, it was the fastball command he had trouble with last week, and in talking about that he compared it to the AFL where he also had trouble with locating the fastball. In the recent spring game with all the wild pitches, he actually said his secondary stuff was fine. Carry on.
  9. Even though he'd been with the big league club in his time here, I have always felt like it was trading a prospect when he was dealt. I assumed even at the time there was a good chance he'd get at least a little better, and possibly quite a bit, along with the chance that he wouldn't and would fizzle out (or bounce around as a bench player). I tend to keep at least a little bit of an eye on some former Twins, and each time I'd check his stats last year I'd have that, "Huh, Go-Go is having a pretty decent year!" reaction. Good for him. I always had a bit of a soft spot for him for some reason.
  10. As stated before, a more complete version is in the "Gardy wants pop on the bench" thread, but before Morneau went out he was the DH almost always, and when he came back, he was the DH almost never. That shifted Doumit or Mauer to DH almost always (when it had been rare before Morneau went out for a while because he--Morneau--was usually in the DH slot). It sure seems like the third catcher became "necessary" when one or the other of the first two catchers were turned to DH'ing full time. In that previous thread, I surmised that it would be tough to think they would replace Butera on the roster with "some pop" because Doumit still figures to be the most common DH. But another player that can catch in a pinch (Escobar) would do the trick also, maybe.
  11. Butera actually came up first. He started in Diamond's first two starts which was during the time Mauer was out from behind the plate for a short while after taking the foul tip off the knee. After those first two starts, Butera didn't start along with Diamond again until the final game of the season.
  12. The roster/lineup underwent a fairly significant change as discussed in the "Gardy wants some pop on the bench" thread. (Short version: Morneau became a first-baseman again, making Doumit/Mauer the DH.) I'm not saying it makes it "right," but there was more to it than just "Gardy wanted Butera."
  13. I thought I remember in one of the articles on the game where he threw the three wild pitches in an inning that it mentioned they were all fastballs. I don't have time to try and find which one it was, though. And I also thought after the AFL that he said something along the lines of command of his fastball, but I'm less sure of that memory.
  14. Since there are like 52 guys (approximated) that came up and started last year, I assume you mean someone who is already on the 25-man and in the bullpen that can step in for a start here and there without a roster move? Without Swarzak, it does look like they are short of "that guy." Wasn't the Rule 5 pick a starter not that long ago? Not to go too tangent, but I haven't been seeing much of him lately, so I don't know if he's even likely to make the team. I've read people here saying that DeVries would be moved to the bullpen and kept on the 25-man roster, but I don't know that I've seen that from any "official" source or media.
  15. Oh my GOSH, but it totally should be like that! Although I'm picturing instead of a litter, something like a magician at an old-time carnival would use (or Gob's Aztec Tomb from "Arrested Development" for those who like newer references). And a lot of fanfare associated with the big reveal!!! This might be the best idea since Disco Demolition Night!
  16. I'm curious how many times you'll be willing to reply to my posts in this thread with a self-righteous tone while being completely wrong. We're up to three now. I gotta say, it takes some balls to continue to get high-handed even after you've been proven unequivacolly wrong. Good for you. As long as I'm here, my pointing out how embarrassed you should be about just how wrong you were wasn't my biggest moment. Sometimes softballs right down the middle are too tempting to pass up. I apologize for that, especially given the multiple threads recently about improving the tone. Those threads led to my attempt at a light, concilliatory response to your first post. I won't make that mistake again, but I was probably a little (or a lot) too gleeful and snarky when things took the predictable turn they did. Again, my apologies to the forum.
  17. Well that's gotta be pretty embarrassing. On the other hand, interpreting what people write has never been your strongest suit.
  18. Based on subsequent posts, it seems more like he meant the best he could be. Also based on subsequent posts, it seems like he may think he can do it for years and years. So I really have no idea.
  19. It may not explain it entirely, but the whole league is striking out more. It may be (at least partly) due to pitchers being better at striking people out. EDIT: I was surprised after actually looking, that Mauer's K-rate has actually increased over his career more slowly than the league K-rate. It certainly doesn't appear that way to the eye because he actually decreased it over the first several years and jumped each of the last two (as opposed to the league that has been on a steadier, smoother climb, obviously).
  20. I'm not basing on much fact here, but it seems like having a guy who is known to be on an innings limit go down just before reaching it and then suddenly goes on the DL, that it would be a pretty big no-no with the union (not to mention just the principle of it). In fact, isn't that essentially what the Perkins grievance from several years ago was all about? I reiterate, this is all speculation and fuzzy memory.
  21. Because the projection you were responding to was a one-season line.
  22. While your point may be correct, if you're projecting ceiling, wouldn't it be more informative and accurate to look at the BEST season of the players on that list? Most of them had at least one major league season with a BA better than the overall minor league average listed. Some by quite a margin, and some did it several times. Maybe best major league average compared to best minor league is an even better way to go?
  23. Wouldn't most of his knowledge over there be to make sure to touch the base as you jog on past?
  24. Now I'm just plain confused. Your first post in this thread, in its entirety, said Butera came up when Morneau went out for a couple of weeks. There was no additional commentary as to why or anything about the Morneau-Mauer-Doumit-Butera chain. From there I wanted to get at what was different, especially when Morneau came back. Since Butera stayed, it didn't seem as simple as Morneau Out = Butera In. In response to my attempt to look at what changed, you replied that Gardenhire wanted Butera all along and used Morneau going out as his excuse. I still don't see how that makes sense, and don't see where you made the arguments that you seem to wonder how I missed. Was it in a different thread? I don't see it here. I apologize if I'm missing it somehow. All of that is outside the topic of the thread, though, and I'll re-state the essence of where I was going to hopefully get us out of the mire here: Butera was kept on the roster after Morneau came back because the DH was almost always Doumit or Mauer. Before Morneau went out, it wasn't necessary because Morneau was the DH (and, therefore, Doumit was not). So if the hope is that there is "more pop off the bench" in place of a third catcher, it seems unlikely to me unless A) someone other than Doumit is the primary DH, or the popper can also fill in at catcher.
