  1. Payroll in 2011 was about $25M higher than 2010. I don't know why you keep saying it was lowered. And your friend is not very original (or clever for that matter).
  2. I have a question on the new rules and that reminded me. There's that ~$12M number that is out there...is that the amount they have to offer him IN ORDER TO GET a compensation pick? Or is that the minimum arbitration number, period? I guess I'm wondering if they could offer him arbitration for a more reasonable number.
  3. I could have sworn I heard Bremer saying something about a Twins app as they came back from commercial just in the last few days. Maybe he was talking about the MLB one.
  4. 1) Agreed that many others including Span or Revere likely make the catch. I even agree that Hammer should have. I think I was just saying I don't think it was that easy for him on that particular play because of the look away from the ball near the end (which wouldn't have been necessary or as at a crucial a moment had he not lost it, gotten a good jump, and been faster...haha). I think we're saying about the same thing here. 5) On the double steal, both Bremer and Blyleven went on a while about how Diamond never really even checked the runner at second. He got a HUGE jump. Couldn't agree more about Mauer hopefully being in the lineup today, though. I expect he'll get another day without having the DH available, though. But only a guess.
  5. I think...or maybe I hope?...that both Hendriks and Gibson will be ahead of Walters by next year.
  6. I honestly can not grasp how saying the contact where it occurred was unexpected is something to complain about. Truly baffling.
  7. Carl Pavano?
  8. 1) From the various replays, it appeared to me that he lost the ball for just a moment in the sun, then going back took his eye off to find the wall and then didn't have time to re-react and find the ball. I agree that a good initial reaction makes it a catch, but given his rush at the end, I don't think he was then likely to make the play. If that makes sense. 3) I'm curious how they appeared lazy and uninterested. 5) I've always found it difficult with my level of experience and knowledge to visually judge a catcher's abilities for the most part. So you may be right about him being generally bad. I will say that the double-steal was not on Doumit. At all. That was on the pitcher. 8) As mentioned in the thread about all the ballparks, I don't think you will be to a better ballpark. It's tops. I actually get excited just to see it on TV since I was there last year. It's choice.
  9. Bummer...I guess he's gonna have to give back that bonus. Hope he didn't spend it already.
  10. Also working from memory, I recall a game in the middle-late part of the year where it was a late-afternoon start (probably 3:00) where the shadows start to come over the field in some tough ways, and over and over hitters from both teams were walking back to the dugout, shaking their heads, muttering to themselves, and often saying things to the on-deck guys and people in the dugout. After that game there was a lot of talk about the glare from the Minny and Paul sign as well as the shadows and movement of the trees where it was very hard to pick up the ball. And yes, it was to the level of "that's not safe." And it was both sides. Right after that is when I remember the discussion of the backdrop kicked into high gear. Again...that's my memory of it, so it's always possible there's some slippage there!
  11. From the quote in StarTribune from Mauer: "But coming in hard -- that’s part of the game" He was almost certainly asked about the play and he answered. I don't get how that's complaining or whining or whatever. It was a strange play. Watching it I thought I'd never really seen a collision where the guy was out by THAT much and that far from the plate when the made contact. So yeah, being asked and answering by saying it wasn't what he expected is pretty understandable, isn't it? And even if he did use a tone that implied he was annoyed, is that really so out of line that people need to get up in arms about it?
  12. Congratulations on being the first one to think of that! Enjoy the enormous bonus I'm sure you'll get. If only anyone...ANYONE...could have considered that and done some analysis that controls for teams. That'd be awesome.
  13. I tried to come up with something clever that was essentially "bizarro Samson" for the nicknames thread and couldn't come up with something catchy.
  14. Implying that they are the list is pretty dishonest. I actually don't remember Mauer being part of it at all, but it's possible. But I definitely remember comments by Cuddyer as well, and more than one opposing player, so it wasn't (just) them.
  15. I know it's from a troll that isn't worth the time to read or respond to, but I'm wondering how long we have to read idiots accuse people of crimes without any evidence before the people who run this site have had enough and do something about it. I would hope and expect that doing so to another poster or community member wouldn't be tolerated, and I really don't get why it is fine when it's someone that is only the subject.
  16. In our house, # 7 has been Kid St. Paul for years. The only other "original" we have ever used almost exclusively in place of a player's name was "Zoooommmm!" for any reference to Carlos Gomez.
  17. Parts or all of 13 games for a total of 112 1/3 innings.
  18. Hey, I recognize that lineup! Wonder how often they've gone even two-straight games with identical fielding and batting order over the last...long while.
  19. Same to you! (How many Japanese words and phrases evoke that similar phrase of ours? That and Fukodome are obvious...there must be many others, no?)
  20. Paul can answer for himself, I suppose, but I don't think the ability or type of career is the crucial thing so much as the experience and knowledge from having been there and gone through and learned from many things.
  21. I don't think so. At least where I went to school, people (generally speaking) turned 18 during their senior year anywhere from September of the prior year (beginning of school year) to the end of August just after graduation (just before the following school year). So he was born in December and turned 18 in December of his senior year, which seems normal to what I've known, anyway.
  22. Last night was his 2nd, but I think the point was the same.
  23. Not exactly on topic, but since there's obviously a lot about Liriano here...the last couple days I've gotten to wondering a non-factual-based question: How good would Liriano have to be the rest of the year for the Twins to actually offer him that minimum amount (which I've heard being as high as $12.5M)? I have run a very, very large range of answers that I think might be correct in my head. It's a puzzler!
  24. Is there some way to file suit for "territory infringement" or whatever it is they call it that the Giants use to keep the A's out of San Jose?
