  1. This is the part I'm assuming changed. And I'm wondering the details of how. Is arbitration for players after 6 years gone? Just not connected to compensation picks? Other...?
  2. I wonder if that's some sort of clever inside joke or just a needlessly classless moment.
  3. I think either I'm confusing some terminology or had misinterpreted something in the past. For instance, haven't the Twins offered arbitration to Pavano (before working out deals with him between the offering and when the hearing would have been)? Or wasn't there something like they had to offer one of the Orlandos arbitration with the wink-wink agreement that he wouldn't accept it so that the Twins would get the compensation pick? Maybe there was different system for guys who had already had a free agent contract and those that were first entering? I don't mean to beat a dead horse here (despite the fact that I likely am).
  4. The legalese is pretty much what I was hoping to avoid. Hmmm. Your gist is about what I've heard, but I guess I don't get if the arbitration part is just gone now (for someone entering free agency)? Or...what? For instance, what if they just wanted to offer him $7M? Do they just make that offer and the player accepts or not?
  5. I've half-asked this question elsewhere and I was even going to start a thread on it, but it seems to be on topic here enough to include. Somewhere I'm missing something in the changes for offering arbitration and getting compensation picks. So...can someone tell me where I'm astray here? My understanding of the old system and timeline: After the season, a team could offer a free agent arbitration. If they declined, they became a free agent (and the team would receive first round or sandwich picks depending on Type A or Type B status). If they accepted, THEN the team and the player would submit their salary number and there was a period where they could negotiate any deal with the player before the actual arbitration hearing. At the time of the hearing (assuming they hadn't come to an agreement on their own), the arbitrator picked one. My understanding of the new system and timeline: After the season, a team can offer a free agent arbitration. If they decline an offer of ~$12M, then the offering team gets a compensation pick(s?). But...isn't the amount the team submits only available AFTER the decision is made to accept or decline? So I don't get how the amount is tied to whether or not they get compensation. Does any of that make sense? Does anyone know how it works or where I'm missing something (that I'm guessing is obvious)? I suppose I could go try to find it myself, but I'll first attempt here to see if anyone knows.
  6. You're here enough to know a troll. I know, I know...sometimes it's just too unbelievable to not respond, but we all must try...
  7. I believe that and I believe that. Which is why I'm holding in that rant, because it's probably pretty unfair.
  8. Yeah, still pretty awful. It's taking a lot of self-restraint for me to hold in the rant I'm feeling. Hope it gets fixed soon.
  9. Was it intentional that you picked THE guy as your example of a non-pitch to contact player that also happens to have given THE pro-pitch to contact quote? The irony is fantastic either way, although I'm partial to the flavor where it wasn't. It's been claimed (I don't know the veracity) that for a while Liriano was given a target down the middle and was told to just fire the ball over the plate to let his natural movement thrive. That...didn't work. Congrats on having pitched a lot of games.
  10. Not being successful at making adjustments isn't necessarily because of being unwilling to make them. Failing isn't necessarily the result of not caring. And not caring isn't even the same as taking for granted. I just think it's a pretty big leap to put that specific mentality on someone from the amount of observation we're able to do.
  11. For me it's not an occasional problem. It's more often than not and it happens throughout the day. I usually read threads here and there during down times at work where I'm required to use Internet Explorer (honestly don't know the version). At home I use Firefox, and I also don't know the version there off the top of my head (but can check when I am home later). It's been going on for several days, probably to the end of last week but I don't remember exactly.
  12. How do you know he took his job for granted?
  13. Seems like when I can actually get a page to load, there is comments here and there about pages not loading or slow loading or similar. I don't know if this is "thread-worthy," but I also don't know where else to mention this. The last several days, more often than not, when I open a thread, one of the following things happens: 1) The original poster shows, but without showing the post itself and showing nothing below it (and not being able to scroll down at all). 2) The original post and maybe some responses show properly, but at some point the thread seems cut off with the final entry showing again the poster, but no post. (The # of replies in the thread being larger than the last post showing.) It seems better when I'm logged in than when I'm not, but happens both ways. Basically has made the entire site more frustrating than it's worth to try and even read. Sometimes refreshing will remedy the problems, but not very often. The end.
  14. Jamey Carroll and Trevor Plouffe have almost identical walk rates.
  15. You have to be within spitting distance of where I sat at my only game there last year. Weird.
  16. I do the same. If I'm not going to be able to watch any or even chunks, I'll just dvr. Sometimes I'll be insulated from finding out and I'll watch the game (often hurrying between pitches or the like with the ffwd). But even if I have kept tabs on the game, I like having it recorded for "just in case" moments that I want to go back and watch. Today's game is definitely one to at least watch parts of. I'd say every Votto at-bat (for various reasons) and the 9th inning for absolute sure.
  17. Is there another Delmon Young that played for the Twins other than the one I'm thinking of? And as long as we're mentioning JJ Hardy, one might mention that he gave an interview this year where he gave a lot of credit for his current success to the work of Vavra.
  18. Sure looked like he was bunting for a hit to me.
  19. Or you could try reading and actually trying to understand. That might work just as well.
  20. I'm fairly confident that the 15-20% or so fielding percentage I'd put up would be quite telling of the quality of the player.
  21. Since I was directly quoted in one post and implicated in others, I'd like to reiterate something from that quoted post: I think Hardy is a very good shortstop and would love if he was employed in that role for the Twins. What I actually said was that people often go overboard in their praise to make an invalid point that feeds their negativity, when simply the truth would suffice to make a valid point (that in this case, the Twins made a weird and poor choice).
  22. Agree that Hardy has become one of those players that people like to inflate from reality to fit their narrative that the Twins are stupid and dumb and all the other teams are smart. That said, I didn't really get why he was let go when he was. And also, Doumit doesn't play a lot of shortstop, so that's probably not a great comparison. And on the opposite side of that, I think Doumit has been given a fair amount of credit for his contributions this year. As may be clear, I don't really have a point here!
  23. Typically, I don't find much difference as long as the game is relatively close. My favorite is somewhere in between, actually (4-3 games, etc). But the fact that the Twins have had a fair number of high-scoring games this year has actually been good to my eye, because last year when they fell down by two or three or four runs early, the game felt over. Last night was an example, though, where even after they fell behind, I felt like the COULD come back (even though they obviously didn't).
  24. Wrong guy. That's a McCartney line.
  25. Couldn't agree more about PNC Park or the city of Pittsburgh. Went to both for the first time last year. I expected the ballpark to approach the top of the list, but expected not to get much from the city itself in terms of beauty and character. Well the ballpark did more than approach the top of the list, it vaulted to the top. And without much question. The city (and the people in it) exceeded expectations even more. From a visually stunning downtown, to great food and bars, to wonderful personalities whenever we interacted with locals, Pittsburgh became one of my favorite towns. I can't wait to go back.
