  1. Some years ago we had a sports talking head named Jack Clark wonder why Verlander had lost some speed on his fastball after signing contract. Now he is back.
  2. Who is going to sign Keuchel and Kimbrel this late in spring training?
  3. Salaries can't go higher than the cost of living forever if demand for product is shrinking. Hard to believe advertisers want to pay more for shrinking viewership. My $9 beer shows how ridiculous prices are getting. Look at attendance drop off after new stadium wore off. Trout's contract will look horrible when he has injuries and off-season.
  4. And he likely will drive in and score more runs than Trout, Harper, and Votto for far cheaper.
  5. Its been 30 years since an investigation into Pete Rose's gambling on baseball was started. He finally admitted to betting on baseball in a book he made money off of. It looks like he bet on baseball as a manager and player. I like his signing baseballs, " I bet on baseball". It looks sad when he is by himself at table in Las Vegas signing autographs. He's nearing 80 years old who believes he should get voted into HOF?
  6. I find interesting is attendance is down, television viewership for post-season is 40% or less what it was in the 70's and 80's so why is it assumed that tv contracts and salaries will keep rising. Baseball salaries going up means higher ticket prices, $9 beers, and paying higher cable bills. This can't go on forever.
  7. The Angels are that bad averaging 4.5 runs a game.
  8. Last year he drove in 40 runs other than himself. He should be driving in more runs. He is getting on base at .460 clip and he is only driving in 40 others. This is Joey Votto country. Wait until his HR total drops to 20 ala Votto. You can see another Angels contract disaster.
  9. Can, I first say Trout is a future HOFer. But, when I see 39 HRs and 79 RBIs and 33 HRs and 72 RBIs I'm thinking shouldn't he be driving in more runs? Is he walking instead of driving in runs when no one is behind him? This is the same issue with Joey Votto. The Angels are the only expansion team above .500 by a few games over franchise history. They probably would be better having 2 players that can drive in runs for $43 million.
  10. 8 Most small and mid-market teams have had to build within and trades since FA started in mid 70s in order to win it all. They may sign their franchise players long-time contracts that go past their free agent years. As a mid-market team you hope you have the bigger market teams in a down year and hopefully getting burned in FA. It was great that the Red Sox hadn’t won a WS for 86 years, Yankees went winless until the late 90’s after winning in ‘77 and ‘78, the Dodgers have gone 30 years since winning and the Cubs went 108 years. The Phillies are only 2 WS timers. If you have a bad signing it usually means you have to string the player along until you finally dump him in a trade or release him taking up a roster spot. Signing mid-level pitchers like Hughes and Santana and injury proned like Garza in order to get lucky doesn’t seem to work very much. So building through draft, trades, and a year or two free agent seems to work best for us.
  11. Looking at Anibel Sanchez's career he sure missed alot of games. 136 IP. Amazing how Sanchez can get him a couple year contract. Pitching is so hard to fine.
  12. I looked at his pitching logs. Over a whole season unless the pitcher is very unlucky his team’s record when starting is a pretty good measure especially over 28+ starts unless he has some bawdy ERA. The Twins averaged about 4.5 runs a game so it wasn’t lack of run support. His ERA was good. Seems like a .500 pitcher.
  13. You know what I think is crazy? In 2012 he did that in 111 games. He was on pace for 83 runs scored over 162 games and 80 RBIs. He has extra base power. Votto has never scored more than 106 and has trouble driving in more than 100 runs. Now last year with 12 HRs. He has those OBP but his team can’t win. He should be driving in more. Since 2011 1 season of 100 RBIs. He should be scoring more. Especially in that bandbox.
  14. Yes, because looking at Kyle Gibson’s 2018 record before he won his last 3 games I couldn’t believe they were thinking multi-year multi-millions for someone who’s team record at that point was 12-17 when he was pitching in mid-September. No matter how you spin it I doubt you could call him near elite. Maybe his team will win 18 out of 30 and he will get some offers, but, I doubt it and still think you will regret the contract for most part. I chose the Cardinals because they have 9 starters whom you wouldn’t trade for Kyle Gibson. BTW, I warned about Lance Lynn at best a .500 pitcher who always needed one more pitch. His team lost the last 8 of his 9 starts in 2017. There was speculation he was going to get a $100 million like injury prone Darvish did.
  15. Kershaw, auto-correct. One could see that they were trending down or were getting injured.
  16. If there are no injuries to anyone, I wouldn’t trade any of our pitchers except Ponce de Leon (However you spell it) if I didn’t take account for the money. Before winning his last 3 starts the Twins were 12-17 when he was on the mound and a pitching record of 7-13. Win 3 games only 2 were QS and now you are going to get a big contract. Wow. You must not have any future prospects for awhile. Pitching is tough to predict with the injuries. The last 4 out of 5 long term pitching contracts of our Cardinal pitchers miss most of one or more seasons, but, we manage to get mostly good value out of them as well as having to see Wacha and Lynn miss time when they were under team control. We signed so-so Mike Leake and had to deal him off.
  17. Looking at Darvish and even Arrietta the rewards/risk wasn’t worth the amount being offered. The poor Dodgers extending Keyshawn with all of the time he will spend on the DL.
  18. If Kyle Gibson is your #2 SP, I don’t think that of our starters on the roster I don’t think he would be ranked #7 on the St. Louis Cardinals. He would be behind Mikolas, Wacha, C. Martinez, A. Reyes, Flaherty, J. Gant, and a rejuvenated Wainwright who is pitching well since September. Would he be better than Dakota Hudson for the money the #8 guy? That’s when I see you guys throwing out $50 million for 4 years I think where has been your draft and pitching development and luck? Who is going to make a SP impact in future? We, also, have Ryan Helsley, maybe Ponce deLeon, and Austin Gomber. Then maybe Jordan Hicks moving from the bullpen.
  19. Speeding up the game is noble which is now 3 hours down a little from year before. But, number of strikeouts increased 11,000 over the last 15 years, 30 years ago there were 13,000 more hits. Now there are more strikeouts as hits. The league average for strikeout is 8.4 batters per 9 which only 7 pitchers averaged 15 years ago. The league batting average is down to .245 and will likely fall more. So here you have longer games, less action, fewer hits, 1000 more strikeouts each year for years now, mediocre batting averages, etc. Those trends are likely to trend. Just think if 2 years from now there are another 2000 more strikeouts, batting averages drop to .239 and the length of game? Little by little fans' minds will wonder away. I blame the increased speed for arm injuries, less IP per starter, more strikeouts, etc. Just think if there are even more Strikeouts than hits.
  20. The Twins signed Phil Hughes and he had a very good year. So instead of playing out the contract they decided to enrich him ignoring his on and off again history. The Twins were going to spend. Then what happened? Let Kyle Gibson pitch out his final year and you will likely find others like him that you can risk millions on. He will have another 5 ERA in the near future and a higher WHIP than 1.4. You need a pipeline of developing pitchers. Just think if you get pinned down for 5 years and have to eat $40 million.
  21. This has mediocrity all over it. Has he ever been good? A 1.48 WHIP lifetime. Yes it is AL. You win half his starts and get 6 IP per outing you can be happy I guess. Why can't the Twins develop more young pitchers?
  22. If the trend of more strikeouts and a few more HRs per year continues baseball will be boring. There is fewer and fewer real action in a game with balls in play.
  23. Look at the players they panned.
