  1. Certainly worth exploring if Boston is desperate enough to give him up for next to nothing and eat some of the remaining salary. Not sure this is the way to go otherwise.
  2. Rule 5 is today at 11:00 AM Central time. Hoping the Wander watch won't be the most exciting thing that happens today...
  3. Short-term yes, it's a risk. Long-term it's risky to overpay in free agency or give up highly valued prospects in trades for win-now acquisitions. The Falvey/Levine front office is clearly here to play the long game and they both just signed contract extensions that will keep them in the organization for 5 more years. Fans are free to appreciate their approach or complain and neither side of that argument is entirely wrong. I love what they've done so far and look forward to hopefully many more trades like this as they build up a competitor with a deep farm system and payroll flexibility to strike when they feel it's right.
  4. With the free agent market going crazy this is probably the exact type of trade the Twins should be targeting. Odorizzi was a great get, stock was a little down due to performance and perceived averagish stuff but had pedigree as a highly rated prospect. Two very solid years and an All-Star appearance later it's crazy they got him so cheap. For those clammoring for a "staff ace" to lead the team to post season success it's worth noting that Odo actually pitched pretty well against the Yankees this past postseason. Certainly well enough to have earned a win had the offense not choked.
  5. After seeing the Strasburg, Wheeler and Gibson contacts and Bumgarner's demands that were leaked yesterday I feel like the best course of action would be to pursue a trade with the fallback of not more than a 2 year contract for Keuchel if he'd agree to it. Bumgarner and Ryu are not worth overpaying for in AAV or Years so better to patch the rotation together with veteran mid rotation starters year to year until the prospects are ready or a better opportunity to sign or trade for an ace presents itself. Berrios, Odorizzi, Keuchel, Pineda and Dobnak would still be a very solid rotation.
  6. Out of the proposed options I like Option 1 the best but would pass on Homer Bailey. If they add a Bumgarner, Ryu or similar pitcher to Berrios, Odorizzi and Pineda I believe they'll roll with a competition among Dobnak, Thorpe, Smeltzer, Graterol, etc for the 5th starter slot and frankly as a fan I'd rather see them go that route. Talking strictly free agents I'd really like to see the Twins make a bold statement and leave the winter meetings with contracts for both Bumgarner and Donaldson.
  7. Another solid move. The Nats have to choose between Rendon and Strasburg and the Yankees seem to be zeroed in on Cole. Time to swoop in and steal Strasburg! A+ offseason
  8. With plenty of internal options you’re probably looking for a one year deal either way. The advantage of Shaw over Cron besides the wrist concerns is similar production with the bat with the added benefit of positional flexibility and a left handed bat.
  9. Any explanation as to why they chose to make a change?
  10. With Raley, Rooker and Kirilloff all realistic options by mid year I’d target a one year contract for a veteran infield bat. Travis Shaw makes so much sense on a one year deal hoping for a rebound. Can play 1B or 3B and even sprinkle in a little 2B. With the way the Twins love to mix and match lineups that versatility would be very useful and 2019 was such an outlier for him you’ve got to assume he’s a good candidate to bounce back. If he flops you’re maybe forced to bring up one of the prospects sooner than hoped, if he thrives you can let the youngsters develop longer or flip him in a trade.
  11. Travis Shaw could be an excellent bounce back candidate and can play 1B, 2B and 3B.
  12. The window is wide open, the White Sox are charging hard and Cleveland proved they are still very formidable. Falvey and Levine need to make every effort to at least secure a seat at the negotiating tables for Cole and Strasburg which you have to kind of wonder if they are with the reports that they’ve yet to make an offer on Wheeler. I highly doubt either of them could be swayed to come to MN but as an organization that wants to be taken seriously and with a clear need for a premium starting pitcher they need to at least make the effort. Either of these two would be game changers. They need to come out of this offseason with one of Cole, Strasburg, Wheeler, Bumgarner, I guess Ryu (though hopefully on a much shorter term deal) or an equivalent talent via trade. The payroll situation is in great shape so there is no excuse, they can afford the risk of one potential bad contract on the books. If they fail to upgrade this rotation the offseason is a failure no matter what else they do. As a fan the only other things I hope to see them accomplish is adding an infield bat (don’t care which position) and a backup catcher. I love Astudillo but believe his value is in his versatility and he’s a perfect 26th man. Would love to see Castro back or Chirinos, Russell Martin, Austin Romine, Maldonado or Lucroy. Romo or another bargain veteran bullpen addition would be nice but not a priority.
  13. Was just thinking the same, this would be a solid pickup if they get a chance to claim him.
  14. The White Sox have been very aggressive to kick off the offseason, are reportedly among the several teams interested in Wheeler and don’t seem to be afraid to throw stupid money at free agents. They seem to be of the belief that their competitive window has opened. I’m not so much worried about them signing Wheeler and passing the Twins in the standings but definitely concerned about them being more aggressive, taking him off the market quickly and leaving the Twins with scraps to choose from. 4/$89 sounds pretty good to me. They’ve got control of Berrios through 2023 and Odorizzi for 2020 on a QO. If it were me I’d make the 4 year commitment to Wheeler and sign Hamels to the lucrative 1 year deal he’s rumored to be looking for and let the prospects fight it out for the 5th slot. This would be a very competitive rotation in 2020, I would argue an upgrade compared to 2019. It also sets the Twins up with a lot of options for 2021with the top two slots locked in with Berrios and Wheeler, lots of promising young arms with another year of development under their belts and the option to retain Odorizzi and Hamels or let them walk and pursue other options.
  15. Love the concept of a Betts trade centered around Rosario + a prospect or two. Not interested in attaching David Price to any deal or dealing Sano. Would be open to including Balazovic IF they went nuts and brought back Odorizzi plus two of the first or second tier FA starting pitchers as the rotation would be 4/5 locked down for the next three years and that kind of upgrade plus Betts would be a huge sign that they intend to go for a WS title in 2020. The thought of a Betts, Buxton, Kepler OF is very very exciting. I’d propose Rosario + 1 of Larnach, Rooker or Jeffers + 1 of Sands, Colina, Enlow + Nick Gordon.
  16. 1. Can’t picture Arizona being interested in trading Gallen after giving up quite a bit to get him this past trade deadline. Also feel that’s way too much to give up if they were open to dealing him. 2. Not interested in Anderson at that price at all but agree with the premise of dropping Cron, moving Sano to 1B and adding a defensive upgrade at 3B.
  17. I’d love to see a Graterol/Smeltzer combo for the 5th starter slot. Good way to build innings gradually and they compliment each other nicely.
  18. Edwin Encarnacion is available as of this morning. I’d be all for adding him to spend 2020 at 1B. A middle of the order featuring Cruz, Sano and Encarnacion would be pretty formidable.
  19. I know the Pads wouldn’t do that trade. I’m admittedly very high on Royce and believe he’s going to rebound in a big way in 2020. Love Paddack but as a mostly two pitch pitcher with some durability issues in his past I feel his upside may be limited slightly, enough that I think Royce will be more valuable.
  20. San Diego’s rumored asking price for Kirby Yates (a reliever who probably doesn’t fit their window) was astronomically high so I have a hard time picturing them trading Paddack at all, much less for a palatable price. He’s very impressive but I wouldn’t trade Royce Lewis for him straight up personally. I just don’t see a fit for Kershaw and not sure I’d be interested if he were indeed available. The Reds seem to believe they’re on the cusp and their pitching coach has a long history with Sonny Gray. Not sure what would motivate them to trade him or at least not at an attractive price. Archer I find very intriguing. He flopped as soon as he left Tampa so maybe a return to an analytically savvy organization could help him bounce back. Pittsburgh is a bit of a **** show at the moment with the manager, pitching coach, GM and President all getting fired so now could be a great opportunity to make a low ball trade offer.
  21. I get all that...Even with a salary increase and more responsibilities I just can’t fathom how it would be a good career move to willfully leave a contending team with a very well respected front office and coaching staff to go work for basically a AAA team. Is a bench coach or “offensive coordinator” really that much of a promotion? Seems to me that he could have probably jumped straight to a manager position after another year with the Twins. If I were a hiring POBO looking for my next manager I’d be much more interested in a candidate that worked for a progressive winner with a good culture than a losing team that may have a lot of ambition but is a long ways away from winning. Overall though I’m just bitter that the first sign of success with this team could lead to the coaching staff and front office that got the team in this position getting raided. Already lost the MLB hitting coach and MILB hitting coordinator with the bench coach probably all but gone. I wish Mr. Rowson luck though and have full confidence that Falvey and Levine will surprise everyone with some unconventional but very intriguing hires to replace anyone that does leave.
  22. Marlins eh? Alright...good luck. 2019 was incredibly entertaining until the Yankees series where the one dimensional approach and total lack of situational hitting was exposed. Best of luck but in my opinion anyone willing to make a lateral move from an up and coming winner to a toilet of an organization clearly doesn’t have their priorities in order and therefore is not much of a loss.
  23. Doesn’t read like sour grapes to me. The Twins should be the Twins, chart their own course and innovate in their own way. If they’re always trying to chase the Astros they’ll probably never accomplish more than chasing the Astros.
  24. They both come with pedigree, elite upside, injury history and inconsistent track records. Both have flashed game changing potential in two totally different packages. Both have put this team on their back for stretches of a fantastically entertaining 2019 season. The Arguments in favor of Buxton are all pretty obvious and make total sense. I really feel Sano has a good chance of being the more valuable of the two long-term. If his re-dedication to fitness and preparation proves legit he could have some huge (Nelson Cruz-like) offensive seasons ahead of him. It really seems like he’s just scratching the surface this season and there have been times when you can see he’s totally locked in (like the Back breaking Cleveland Grand Slam) where he seems to be able to be able to hit bombs at will. His all bat profile probably ages better than Buxton’s athleticism dependent profile. Sano for me but that is absolutely no slight to Buxton.
  25. This would be a terrible outcome that would probably set the organization back years, how would this be a positive? It took a few years but Falvey and Levine’s efforts to upgrade the front office and player development staff, change the culture and fully integrate analytics clearly paid off organization wide this year. Imagine what another year could bring!
