  1. As usual, these issues are made much more complicated than they need to be. Byron Buxton is a Major League baseball player. If he is healthy enough he should be playing at the Major League level. If he goes home he could be hurt walking down the stairs. Chances of getting hurt in the minor leagues just as great. He needs the competition. Bring him up and let him play with nothing at stake. If he gets hurt again, better find out now that in April, 2019.
  2. 1) Murphy will never play for the Twins. 2) Over the course of a season, managers have a huge impact on the final results. Molitor is obviously just along for the ride and assumes no responsibility for anything. Obviously the players play the game but the manager must provide the glue, the team attitude and consistency from game to game to say nothing of decisions that do directly determine the outcome of enough games to make a huge difference. 3) The notion that the front office has any plan at all is comical.
  3. Another meaningless move in a now meaningless season for, unfortunately, a meaningless franchise for the foreseeable future. Why did they make the off season moves they made if they were going to throw in the towel 2/3 of the way through this season? Did they expect Cleveland to roll over and play dead? I don't think the Twins ownership/FO/manager has a clue what they are trying to accomplish. Any evidence to the contrary please identify.
  4. Molitor may "go" on his own but he will never be sent. He fits the mold of a Minnesota Twins manager perfectly. Rapidly becoming one of the worst run franchises in professional sports. Watching the Atlanta Braves beat Washington last night was so refreshing. Braves have a parade of fresh faces plus a real veteran first baseman in Freeman who can flat play the game. My guess is that every one of these players, including Freeman at some point, were probably available to the Twins. Again, where is the 2016 number 1 pick in all of MLB and why is his name never mentioned in 2019 plans, if not 2018? Will he even be called up during the ridiculous roster expansion in September? Never could understand that since that is crunch time and should be decided by the core team; not exhibition teams.
  5. Al I know is that August/Sep this year could have still been fun and has been made totally irrelevant by the FO. Grapefruit games in March are more interesting than these last two months will be. On to football and who cares whether the Twins beat the Indians in the rest of this series with the lineups they will send out there. Also, what is one good reason why Buxton should not be called up immediately and told not to crash into walls or take chances on the bases. Just work on his hitting against actual Major League pitching. If he is too fragile to risk that he should be released.
  6. I have absolutely no curiosity about anything the Twins do at this point for the foreseeable future. They have totally wasted the past 9 years since 2010 and NOW they go into rebuild mode. I am curious to see how Dozier does in a truly competitive environment where the team and fans actually have high expectations. That should be interesting. Pressure is one thing he never had to worry about playing for the Twins.
  7. It truly is amazing that the Minnesota Twins' ownership/management has no apparent interest in winning baseball games. The only people at Target for the home stand should be those on the payroll and fans of the visiting teams.
  8. Amazes me that this thread, after winning 4 straight from Jays and Red Sox, quickly evolves into whether or not the Twins should trade Gibson or whomever. Right! Trade a pitcher who you have stayed with all these years, who has always had good "stuff" and is just now finding himself at age 30. Just go back out there tonight and try to win another game. Even splitting the series at Boston is fine; anything better is great. Then guess who comes to Target. Forget trades and just play ball. Too many vicarious GMs on this board.
  9. This afternoon is possibly the biggest start of any of those starting pitchers for the 2018 campaign. If Santana can equal his early 2017 form, the Twins do have a chance to at least hang around and keep things interesting.
  10. Continuing the perplexing trend of losing to weaker teams and then playing like true playoff contenders against the better teams. Next 8 games are against Jays, Red Sox and Indians. Should be interesting and may be the season.
  11. Since 2010, the Twins are 536-692, .436, pure mediocrity. And the word is rebuild? Rebuild from what? How about simply beating KC tonight? It still amazes me that pro sports teams get away with "Well we have to plan for the future." What in the Sam Hill have you been doing for 8 years besides lowering your golf handicap and going to meetings and studying stat sheets? How about going out tonight and winning a baseball game? Then do the same thing 67 more times. You may surprise yourself.
  12. The front office seems unable to commit to any strategy; long term or short term. If the Astros are the model, then you have back to back to back horrible seasons as you build the roster into possible World Series winners. The Twins were off to a good start with that after 2016 but what did they do to really build the team into contenders especially with the #1 pick in all of MLB? Nothing that stands out; just a bunch of ifs, ands, buts or maybes. Then they have a winning 2017 and act like they are trying to improve for 2018 which is fine but totally blows the Astros model. Now its same old approach of simply making it through the season and trying to keep attendance up. A simple commitment to winning is what I have never heard from the Twins' ownership/management. If they are true professionals in the field of MLB management, they should be able to stay competitive and improve at the same time. The fact that it is always either one or the other, to me, is a cob out and just the perpetual excuse for not winning.
  13. All in all, what a way to end the first 58% of the season. Post All Star, its a 9 game road trip and then guess who comes to town. By the end of July, we will know a lot. I hope Berrios's last outing wasn't the Twins' All Star jinx before the game was even played. I am glad Rosario didn't make it.
  14. Sano's issues are from the neck up; not the neck down. Does he have the burning desire to play baseball at the highest level or would he be content to go home to the DR and live happily there after? No more complicated than that. Only those who really know Sano can answer that and batting analysis does no good unless that question is answered.
  15. Through all of this it seems that the Twins have a bunch of interchangeable parts at 3rd, 2nd and SS. What about first base? Mauer has been there because there is no where else to put him. Sano should be worked out at first base until he collapses and then worked out some more. if he can't become a regular MLB first baseman then send him back to the Dominican Republic where he can retire in his early 20s. Twins should focus on a bonafide first baseman. Biggest problem at the other 3 in field positions is deciding who to play. BTW, is Polanco only a starting shortstop on a losing team but when that team starts winning he is not a starting short stop? Please explain. If Lewis actually shows up on the Twins roster then let him compete for the position but don't say Polanco can't play it. Jim Palmer said in game 4 that Polanco's final out play from deep short was one of the best plays he had seen all year. Palmer does not compliment lightly.
  16. Something about having Polanco back in the lineup that just makes a difference in the whole team and its not all in the stat sheet. Buy/sell only makes sense if it is a win for the Twins this season. Not some pipe dream future season. Didn't see the ball that supposedly Buxton would have caught but I will take consistency and solid play on "both sides of the ball" over the occasional weekly highlight any time. Go Twins..take 2 of next 3 and make the next 68 interesting.
  17. I love this "sell" talk. Mauer is going no where. Does anyone think the Twins will trade a Dozier or, heaven forbid. an Escobar or Rosario and come out ahead? If they trade 1 second tier player for another so what? I think players like Cave should be given a very long leash I say win every game they can when they can and don't shop anyone. If a desperate team comes to them with an offer too good to refuse ok but don't advertise anyone. I don't trust any front office that has the number 1 draft pick in all of MLB and that player simply disappears. At least split with Tampa, take the All Star break , except Berrios who is probably doomed like past few Twins' All Stars (see Sano, Perkins, Kintzler, Santana). Thank goodness Rosario didn't make it. Post All Star simply stay on Cleveland's heels and see what happens in September.
  18. Gordon did make a nice play on the ball that ricocheted off the wall that did have triple written all over it. 20-20 hindsight...take a double with no outs. According to Fox announcers Slegers was relying way too much on his mediocre fast ball and Royals were sitting on it. Maybe Garver had a role? Twins really do need to win today to show that sweeping Os really did mean something. Os have taken 2 of 3 from Yankees so, as usual, nothing makes sense but losing a series to a team that had lost 10 in a row still not good.
  19. "Nobody I'd rather have up with runs on second and third, down 1 run." Who are you, the opposing pitcher? 7 more games at Target pre all star. It is interesting that last year the Twins actually did better on the road (44-37) than home (41-40), so that clearly is the difference from this year. Even 4-3 over those 7 would be a nice 8-3 home stand. Then come back post all star and improve that road record. Still have a chance for a decent season and for keeping the Central visible on the radar screen. Likely? Of course not. Possible? Why not? Just make Sept. ball interesting and see what happens. BTW, we were in Seattle last week and I ran in to several Twins fans wearing Twins garb.
  20. I don't know about the heat but as they say everyone plays the same course. What's amazing is that with no DH the offense gets "hot", Mauer has 8 rbi's in 2 games and with no DH on the other team the pitching goes south. Where are the stat heads now? BTW, Twins will win tomorrow because they always do when embarrassment is on the line. I do have sympathy for the umpires. Just win tomorrow, make it to the break with .500 in range, fire Molitor and go from there.
  21. Now watch them win the Cubs series which would be true to form lately. It is hard to believe that basically the same team that was at the top in home runs last year and had several huge offensive games now can't seem to score a run. It is a shame that in today's game once playoffs are apparently out of sight (with the season less than half over) teams quit trying to win as many games as they can and start talking about trading their best players and looking ahead to future years. I hope the Twins don't do that because they have yet to field the team that finished last year. I think they should try to finish the season out with their A team on the field (that means, Sano, Buxton and Polanco) and see what happens.
  22. The Twins could fire Molitor just to show fans that ownership/management even gives a rat's behind, win enough games pre all-star to keep .500 on the radar. come back post all-star with Sano, Buxton and Polanco back in the lineup, and the team being told by the new manager to produce or else. Or.....they could do what they will do which is absolutely nothing saying "Wait 'til 2021 boy".
  23. You are right; it can't possibly be stupid given the geniuses that run the Minnesota Twins. Only those with a true vision into the future and insight unknown to mere mortals does this move to A Ball where the competition will bring out his true ability appreciate this make sense. Unfortunately, if he hits .500 and 1 home run every 6 ABs, what does it prove? If he flops at A Ball, then what? If/when he comes back up what route does he take, straight back to the Majors or AA, AAA then majors? Then, how long of a leash once he gets back up? "Well, he has to get used to Major League pitching". (Paul Molitor or replacement. Aug. 10, 2018).
  24. Miguel Sano is from a country where the average "worker" wage is about $200.00/month. He is given a signing bonus of $3mil+ and has been paid close to 5mil total counting low-mid 6 figure salary. As such he is already set for life in his home country and will always be a star there. So the real question is, what are his priorities and how much does desire does he have to excel in MLB if he actually has to work for it? No more complicated than that. Making the Twins great again lol.
  25. Per bighat "Time to clean house. I think Gene Glynn would be a nice interim manager for the rest of the season." I don't know who Gene Glynn is but one more time...if Molitor remains as manager, that says all you need to know about the goals of the franchise. Those goals would not include winning baseball games. Even if firing a manager is only symbolic, it is a big part of big time (not just pro) sports and is a statement to players and fans that ownership is not happy. Not firing a manager like Molitor simply says, "What, us worry?"
