Sonny Gray 2018 3.9 bb9 2020 4.2 Abel 2025 MLB BB/9 is 3.2 Sonny Gray career BB/9 career 2.9 but skewed by his last 2 years. He has consistently been above 3 for a majority of his career. May want to go look at the stats. Thats not to say Abel doesn't have command issues he does.
-
I would say actually looking a little deeper, Matthews and Abel are very similar except Abel is 2 years younger. Matthews has only average to slightly above average pitches, although I think that is old info. He on the other hand has elite control command. He is more on the Ryan path of needed to develop his other pitches more and continuing to tweak his fastball and fastball velocity. Abel has the elite fastball and a plus slider. His 3 other pitches are above average with what can be considered spotty command. Abel has more upside, Matthews has a much higher floor.

Trade calculator is up - Padres - Miller 30.4, JP Sear 12.4 42.8 total - for Athletics - Baez 1.4, Nunez 2, Nett 2.8, De Vries 50.5. All the value is tied to De Vries. There is a lot more years of control with both players and it sounds like Padres want to make Miller a starting Pitcher.

He had prospect shine because the Phillies continued to push him hard up at each level. He was always way younger than the competition. To me his stats in AAA show a player that has the potential to be a very good long term starter in the majors. His walk numbers aren't that far off from Sonny Gray historical numbers. If we could get a sonny Gray everyone would be thrilled.
-
Ok then how about for 2026, or do you want to piss in those cheerios too LOL. Abel has higher upside and more likelihood of becoming a solid starter than Matthews. If both hit we are in great shape for the future.
-
I still think Ober is our #3, unless we trade Ryan today.
-
Our Farm system has consistently been one of the worst until last year. Other than Lewis, Lee, and now Jenkins. The difference is we really have some pitchers with some high extremely high ceilings. You need to find that elite starter. Its the hardest thing to find in baseball. We are finally taking some swings to try to find one.

He's arguably had the best numbers in the minors of his entire career this year in AAA with a 2.31 ERA. If you remove just his last start at the MLB level he would have a 3.47 ERA for his cup of coffee. I am not sure how he lost all this shine???? Last year he struggled in AAA with a 1.83 whip in 24 starts.
-
We just found a team where the fans hate the trade and organization more than the Duran trade LOL.
-
De Vries has a .245/.357/.410 slash line in A+ ball as 18 year old. My guess is those ratings are a little old. He has ability, but the exact same risks as Tait. The Athletics also traded JP Sears as well.

Been around for a while, had to create a new account because old email went away and couldn't remember the password LOL. Changed to this because my old name was Bean Counter which had just minor differences from my dads screen name so thought it would be good to avoid the confusion. LOL

That specific poster has not looked at anything logically in the last 24 hours. His statements and opinions have been very clear. We have a system that is loaded, we have a front office that is completely restricted by ownership. Meaning in the next 1-2 years, I don't see us getting the financial support to actually put a winning team on the field. So Rebuild is the best answer. I still don't think its the way they go, unless the payouts are so great even those here on Twinsdaily think we won decisively. The only other option is you trade for replacements in the offseason and try to keep your prospect capital ahead, and or achieve more years of controlability.

Coloumbe, Bader and Castro are gone. Personally I think you keep Vazquez, but if we are shedding salary you trade him for a bag of balls. Then we look at 2026. As of right now it looks like we have 3 very good relievers, Jax, Sands and Varland. That isn't much different than what we had coming into this year. Stewart when healthy is another above average reliever. You can find some additional pieces. No Varland isn't a Duran, is he a very good reliever, it is definitely trending that way. The question is do they do a tear down and trade Jax and Ryan? Personally I think they should, they have already ripped the band aid off might as well go the rest of the way. However, the Twins during the Falvey years have always tried to put a good product on the field that can compete. So I think we continue to thread this line of trying to keep a good enough team, trade some from the minors, without ever building a truly elite team. Being good isn't good enough, evidenced by the pitchforks on this forum. Take some big swings on trades if available for some elite players. Trading Ryan is the piece that could bring the most. Trade Jax, trade the expiring, and then if you can get overpays on Varland, Stewart you do it. If you can trade Correa for minimal prospect damage, you do it. This is a play for 2028 moving forward. Then in the offseason we can talk about Ober and Lopez.
-
Seriously - we didn't have already a thread with same title LOL.
-
I don't think anyone is saying we sold low. Could we have gotten more, thats up to speculation but we got the 2 best prospects traded this deadline. The catcher I think they were targeting was Taitn Gray in the 3rd and was picked 2 picks above them. Great exit velocities and a very similar profile to Tait - hell almost the same name.

Raya gets shelled in AAA, so far this year Abel has not. I understand your points though. There is risk with any move. However his BB rate isn't that far off from players like Sonny Gray or even SWR as I mentioned earlier. There is definitely a path where he can find more consistency. He is only 23.

SWR has a whip of 1.4 and BB9 of 3.9 ERA of 4.24 SWR has no elite pitches. Abel has a whip of 1.36 BB9 of 3.2 ER of 5.04 (3.47 prior to last outing) - 1 elite pitch and 1 plus pitch, 3 others above average I like SWR. He is the definition of a pitcher. He is not a thrower, he is a pitcher. Even still Abel on raw stats in limited outings is just as good. He has 2 better pitches, 1 being elite and yes he does have a much higher ceiling that SWR and would have a much higher value in any trade. Yes he has some starter risk, but I don't think its near the risk some want to point out. Sonny Gray has had a lifetime 3 BB per a 9. Yes he needs to improve some control, but its not that far off.

Yes I did overstate some after watching Warne stream last night. He has 5 above average pitches. His fastball is elite, his slider is a plus pitch. You dislike anything the twins are doing. I tried to give an olive branch yesterday.

5-18 Pit 6 Innining 0 ER 5 hits 9 SO 0 BB 6-4 Tor 5.1 Inn 1 ER 3 hits 2 SO 0 BB 6-10 Cubs 4 inn 6 hits 3 ER 3 SO 3 BB (3HR) 6-16 Mia 5 inn 1 ER 3 hits 3 SO 1 BB 6-21 Mets 3 Innings 4 ER 1 SO 0 BB (4HR) 7/2 Padres 1.2 Inn 5 ER 5 hits 5 BB 3 SO That Padres outing was rough, prior to that he had a 3.47 ERA. That was in 23 1/3. He would have had 4 walks in 23 innings. So 1.56 BB per a 9 and it looks like he didn't have control in 2 outings, where he gave up 9 of his 10 BB. He has average over 3 BB per a nine in the minors so this is also something we can't just gloss over. On first glance what does he need to work on. Its the blowups. Yes he does have to work on some control. He gave up 7 HR in 2 games ouch. That looks like an anomoly though as he has not historical gave up a ton of runs. For the Minors 1 per a nine. He also needs to work on creating more whiffs for him the SO/9 has to be closer to 10 than 9. He had 7.6 per a 9 and that was carried by the Pit outing. Honestly for a young kid still gaining his confidence and continuing to improve on his stuff. Philly pushes their prospects hard, so I am not surprised to see he hasn't been as dominant as some would like until AAA this year. His whip is 1.16 in AAA this year, 1.36 in the majors, even with some rough outings. That is something the Twins can work with.

I said he has a ceiling of a #1 or #2 pitcher. He has 5 elite pitches. The stuff is there for a high end pitcher. He could also be mid rotation, a reliever or flame out.

They took a P that has #1 or #2 starter potential and C whose bat looks legit. My guess is other than Painter these are the 2 they targeted.

Painter wasn’t offered. It would have been like someone asking Jenkins for us. Even an elite closer won’t get that deal done. Painter had double the value of Duran. Levine is on MLB network and felt the Twins got an overpay. Ultimately it comes down to if the prospects work out but we took 2 players with incredibly high ceilings.

Abel is very similar to Ragans in that they both had some control issues on their first cup of coffee at the MLB level. Abel has more shine still on him than Ragans did when he was traded, but the concerns were the same.

Jeffers. Now I still like Lewis and Lee. I agree we haven’t seen any stars for a bat first approach in the drafts. But that also occurs when they have only drafted in the top 10 draft picks 2-3 times in the last 10 years.
