  1. Kyle Gibson may be the #2 highlight of the season (behind Rosario). He may not be an ace that will be THE solution, but he certainly is not part of the problem moving forward.
  2. But we would take BOTH of those wouldn't we?!
  3. Man, I wish everyone would just stop saying the name "Johnny Field"!
  4. See...now why did you have to bring that up...lol. I was so happy thinking about a bright Twins future!
  5. Based solely on performance, Buxton deserves to be sent home. Based on how badly the Twins need him to produce next year, I thought they should have called him up. By all accounts, he is a tireless worker, so I don't think it's a lack of effort, so I don't know if "punishing him" is the best move. Like all these kinds of decisions, none of us really know how it's going to work out. I do know that if Buxton (and Sano?) can't become at least a solid big-leaguer, the Twins are MUCH further behind in the rebuild than we all thought.
  6. I like the Yelich comp. I don't think there is a current Twins player, besides maybe Rosario, that I want to do well more than Max Kepler.
  7. So, according to the FO, there are "playing time concerns" for Buxton. But last night Mollie trotted out Grossman and something called "Johnny Field". The MLBPA is going to be all over that. We also apparently don't have enough innings to audition guys like Anderson and Reed b/c.....what, we want a good look at Matt Belisle??? I'm a patient guy. A diehard, lifelong Twins fan. But the FO is going to really try fans' patience with these type of decisions.
  8. Very true on the pitch count. It's a good point. Is that what proponents of the "opener" are using or is just the fact that you don't start by facing the top 4-5 hitters in a lineup? I don't know. I'm just asking.
  9. It's just sort of a best-case plan. That's where you start. If he gets dinged, then the plan changes.
  10. No, no. I'm talking more the idea that such a high pct of at bats end in walk, K or HR. I hate how baseball is removing so much strategy. No bunting. No stealing. No hit and run. It think it's a better game to watch with those things than without. I have much less of an issue with the "opener" concept than I do with the radical change if offensive approach.
  11. 100% agree. I get the idea that a starter only faces best part of an order twice....I just don't see what the difference is between a) letting a Stewart/Little/Mejia start and face a lineup twice and then go to the 'pen and using an "opener". One of the things that frustrates me about baseball today, is it seems like pitchers are being programmed to go 5 innings. That makes it awfully tough on a bullpen, esp one that doesn't have the depth of say a Houston.
  12. Remarkable to me what a hot button topic this is. I'm a "purist". I think baseball played the right way is like poetry. Is there anything better than a perfectly executed hit and run? A guy legging out a triple? In this new era of BB/K or HR, that is being taken out of the game and it's unfortunate. Today, a guy like Tony Gwynn would be told to change his launch angle and swing for the fences. I get that analytics MAY find a way to theoretically win one or two more games a year, but the game I love is getting really hard to watch. As for the "opener", I understand that a pitcher's effectiveness declines when facing a lineup for the 3rd time. But what's the difference if you use an "opener" to face the top of the lineup the first time through or the third? What's the difference between starting Jake Odorizzi and taking him out before he sees a lineup a 3rd time and putting him in after the heart of the order has batted once? Seems like 6 of one and half dozen of the other. Also think this movement speaks to teams' ability to develop quality starting pitching....aka the Twins, Rays, etc. I agree with the comment on how Houston doesn't need to use an opener....ironically, with some of the guys who are now in their bullpen, they may be the team MOST qualified to do it.
  13. Of course. Although he did basically start with the top of the order after May allowed the 4 runs and 5 hits in the first.
  14. Oh. And good for Kohl Stewart!! How cool would it have been if he'd started the game, put in that performance 10 minutes from where he grew up, and left after five innings after battling the great Justin Verlander to a 0-0 tie instead of leaving in a 4-0 hole??
  15. THANK. YOU!!!! Your starters are your best pitchers. Many bullpen guys are failed starters...even the best ones. Why would you start a game...against the best part of an opponents lineup, with your, say, 8th best pitcher?? Analytics (i.e. the shift) have exposed weaknesses in hitters (how pathetic is it that a MLB hitter can't or won't hit the ball the other way. Or is completely incapable of pushing a bunt toward third?!), but analytics may have outsmarted itself with the opener concept. Geez, just play the friggin' game!
  16. Exactly. Levine has talked about how "Joe has earned the right to....". I think it's all lip service. These Ivy League "baseball guys" are all business.
  17. I hate it, but I tend to be in the SD/Cody camp. After what Falvey did over the weekend, I think they quietly push him toward retirement. And, when concussion symptoms return after just diving for a pop up, maybe it'd be in Joe's best interest to hang 'em up. If he returns, I think they can limit him to around 100 games at 1B and about 40 at DH. He and Tyler Austin may make an interesting 1B/DH platoon. Sano can play 125 at 3B, 25 at DH.
  18. The bullpen shuttle will continue, so we'll likely see those type of guys go up and down. Other than Nick Gordon, I have absolutely NO idea when we'll see any of these kids. But MAN it's fun to think about this team's future if a high(ish) percentage of these prospects pan out.
  19. I hate to even say it, but might this move be about Joe Mauer's concussion symptoms? And the fact that the Twins are highly susceptible to leftys? If Joe can't return soon, Morrison stays at 1B. Is Sano then your 3B or DH? If he's your 3B and Escobar goes back to SS, then who's your DH? Carter simply provides another RH option.
  20. Terrific effort from Odorizzi. Bad approach/game plan from Twins hitters.
  21. Old school guy myself. Why can't we just say "other teams just aren't hitting ball very hard off of him" like we used to?!
  22. Sorry, but Kendrys Morales was not good the short time he was here. I think these FA/FO are learning that ST actually is important....see, Arrieta, Cobb, Lynn, Morrison, etc.
  23. Kyle Gibson has always had the stuff. His 2-seamer/sinker are ridiculous with their movement. I think he's just finally gotten out of his own way....stopped overthinking everything/trying to be too fine and just trusts his stuff.
  24. Beating the White Sox three times certainly does not mean issues are gone, but given the fact that they are playing without Buxton, Sano, Castro and Erv, expectations need to be tempered and we better take any win we can get.
