  1. A lot of people thought he should start in AAA. 50 ABs in March against rusty/bad pitching don't mean squat, really. I wanted to see him in AAA until Mastro went down, then I waffled. But there were legitimate reasons to keep him in the minors to start 2013 no matter who was "in front" of him on the depth chart. Aaron Hicks has not adjusted to new levels well in his career and asking him to skip a level and go directly to the highest level of competition was a pretty tall order.
  2. I think it's impossible to predict what Hicks is going to do this season. If there's a guy whose 2014 is completely unpredictable, it's Aaron Hicks. He could be a .725-.750 OPS player. He could be exposed against righties and struggle to clear .600. Given his 2013 and how volatile it was from start to finish, I have absolutely no idea what to expect from him.
  3. This is my only guess as to why Garza got so little comparatively speaking. On paper, he's a better pitcher than Nolasco. Not infinitely better, but better. And he's a year younger. At that point, the only reason I can come up with why he received that contract is "medical records". Something in his history is throwing up red flags, something we don't see as fans. There are just too many MLB teams that need quality MLB starters to pass up on Garza so readily, especially when they can get him without draft pick compensation.
  4. If guys like Greg Gagne are in the Twins Hall of Fame, then guys like Chuck Knoblauch deserve to be in there twice.
  5. In the past five years, Mauer has posted an OBP of .444 and .416. Is it likely he'll post .420 or better in 2014? No. Is it impossible? Definitely not. I'm not even sure his increasing K rate is a concern right now, though that BABIP sure is.
  6. The first part is an issue. The second part, eh, not so much. Great basestealers help their team considerably but most basestealers do nearly as much damage as good by giving the other team free outs 30% or more of the time.
  7. While it's definitely not out of the realm of possibility to lose 90 games again, this prediction is just absurd. A one-armed version of Joe Mauer could probably OPS around .750. Bi-lateral "omg there are rumors he might die tomorrow" weakness Joe Mauer posted an OPS of .730. It's pretty hard to take anything he's saying seriously when there's something so completely insane mixed in with the other, more valid, points.
  8. I know this isn't the driving force behind you wanting Santana but I don't like this kind of thinking... Teams should do what's best for their franchise, not worry about how it impacts rivals. That kind of thinking leads to moves like signing Jacoby Ellsbury for a gajillion dollars through his age 147 season. Really, I don't care about the deal's impact on Kansas City. I care about whether it's a good value for the Twins. It's the same reason why I commend the Twins for taking what they perceive to be the BPA every draft. Drafting around "future needs" means you spend every draft chasing your own tail instead of just taking the player that has the most talent.
  9. It should be noted that in the case of Santana, the second round pick shouldn't even be a consideration. Whatever you'd get in the second round is probably going to be inferior to what you'll get for Correia in trade (and if they pick up another pitcher, they're almost obligated to move Correia to another team to clear up at least one spot for Worley/Diamond/Gibson/Deduno).
  10. An odd list, for sure. Sano at 14, Berrios/Rosario behind Pinto. *scratches head*
  11. I don't like Ervin Santana. Never have for some reason. With that said, I don't know how you pass him up at that price.
  12. Offense absolutely should be adjusted for position. Getting offensive performance out of the shortstop position is far more difficult than, say, left field. But that doesn't give a team license to trot out a .600 OPS player at short because "everybody else is good, he doesn't have to be". That's a lazy, bad way of assembling an MLB roster. There's no reason one position gets to be a black hole by default, especially if that doesn't have to be the case.
  13. An extra win is an extra win whether it's the 65th or 95th win. There simply isn't a good reason to trot out a bad player at any position if you have the ability and resources to field a better player. Guys getting a free pass with the bat because they field a particular position is one of the old, bad ideas of baseball that needs to go away. Improvements should be made when and where they can (barring payroll, prospect, and future plans). Nobody should get a pass for being a subpar player and EVERYBODY should do their job (I hate the phrase "if everybody else does their jobs...", implying that eight guys have to do their jobs while the little league shortstop doesn't).
  14. Irrelevant.
  15. Perhaps, maybe even likely. But I don't like the idea of signing two 30 year old pitchers to four year contracts at the same time, not when the offense looks the way it does right now. Ryan did enough to make the pitching staff competitive next season. I think he'd be better served by shifting his attention to the offense at this point.
  16. That's different, IMO. Pittsburgh balked at Sano and allowed the Twins to re-enter negotiations, didn't they? I think it's a little different if two teams are in negotiations with a player, the "winning" team gets cold feet, and the second place team re-ups their offer. That doesn't seem to be the case with Garza. We don't know if the Twins were even in on the bidding and I don't recall a deal ever being announced between Pittsburgh and Sano. I could be wrong, though... I'm just going from memory.
  17. Win win win all around if that's the case.
  18. Which is why I believe in incremental free agent signings. It mitigates risk by acquiring/dropping contracts on a staggered basis instead of all at once and it allows you flexibility to change your roster on the fly. Say the Twins sign Garza. He has an awful season or gets hurt. Meyer takes his place and kills it. Now you're saddled with a $14m/year guy you can't trade and don't want on the roster. As you said, Rome wasn't built in a day. That doesn't mean Ryan should sit on his hands but it certainly doesn't hurt to spread around the wealth a bit instead of putting all the eggs in one basket, mixing short/mid-term contracts between hitters and pitchers.
  19. Except for that one time when he went out and signed $80m+ worth of pitchers. Also called "two months ago".
  20. Personally, I think it's a bad idea to sign two pitchers to four year deals that might go through their decline phases at the same time, making them bad values in years three and four while eating $25m+ in salary. I'd rather see the Twins work on shoring up the offense on shorter-term deals... Say, offering Drew a two year contract at a high yearly value and see if he bites.
  21. It means that should there be a game 163 tiebreaker, Michael Young will Jeffrey Dahmer the opposing team in their hotel rooms.
  22. On top of that, I don't think Ryan's the type of guy to swoop a player from another general manager and potentially burn that bridge.
  23. To add to this question: "He's sitting over there. Want to interview him right now? You cool with that, Mr. St. Peter?"
  24. Please be a bat. Please be a bat. Arroyo is a nice pitcher and all but he's old and the offense badly needs help.
