  1. I don't know if I even buy in that they'll win more - though that's possible with Mauer, Nolasco, Milone, May, or Meyer - but I think it's incredibly unlikely that they'll win less than the teams below them. The 2014 Twins are a bad team but they're not terrible... I don't see any reason for them to start playing worse ball than they've played up to this point.
  2. To add to that: if players hit much better in MLB than they do MiLB, they're either an outlier or were very young in MiLB (eg. Miguel Cabrera). That doesn't mean Santana can't keep hitting... but given his peripherals and plate discipline, it does mean it's very unlikely he will continue being an .850 OPS player.
  3. It's just a shame that most of his teammates don't share his enthusiasm for the subject. This is a pretty decent primer on some of the more popular advanced metrics and how Perkins uses them to his advantage. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/min/for-twins-closer-glen-perkins-baseball-really-is-a-numbers-game?ymd=20140804&content_id=87928284&vkey=news_min
  4. Yeah, that's true... But I don't blame the Twins for picking up a CF option if Santana goes down with injury. Things would get really ugly if you had to roll out that crew in center for two or three weeks. Either way, I just don't see any reason why anyone would be excited about or against this move. It's mostly irrelevant.
  5. Danny Santana has a career MiLB OPS of .703. Counting on him to hit like a corner outfielder is a stretch. Love what the kid's doing out there but it's hard not to be skeptical that he's a MLB quality bat long-term, much less whether his bat will carry at a corner position.
  6. The benefit of Schafer is that you don't care if he rots on the bench and receives 50 PAs over two months.
  7. I'm guessing that Schafer is a fallback option and won't get much in the way of playing time. He's the kind of guy you stash at the back of the bench and forget about until you need him, if you need him at all.
  8. Rebuilding teams have to make this kind of move all the time. If the team legitimately cared about winning, they wouldn't have traded their centerfielder for a starter three days ago but it was the right move to make. In the past 24 months, Terry Ryan has flipped three centerfielders for starting pitchers and even that wouldn't have caused a problem if not for the simultaneous setbacks of three top 100 centerfield prospects. Had any one of those guys not floundered, gotten suspended, or gotten injured, we'd all be excited to see them trot on to Target Field in August, not worry about scrapheap pickups for two months. And despite Rosario's suspension and Hicks' struggles, the Twins could call them up and give them a shot instead of Shafer... But it's not the right move to make.
  9. Everybody wants to see Hicks, Buxton, or Rosario in CF. Unfortunately, none of them are ready. And that shouldn't give pause to the quality of the farm system; the odds of having three top 100 centerfield prospects suffer three different setbacks are small. But hey, it happens. The only one of the three with long term questions is Hicks.
  10. Predicting a drop in the Twins' standings is pessimistic and frankly, a bit tiresome. In case people hadn't noticed, the Twins actually walked away from the trade deadline a better team than they entered it. One of their biggest problems in June/July was band-aided with the addition of Tommy Milone. What other cellar-dweller can say that, not to mention that most other cellar-dwellers are in the same position of the Twins, and that's playing a bunch of scrubs and rookies in August and September. As bad as the Twins might be in August and September, it's just as likely that the other teams around them in the standings are going to be just as bad. Therefore, barring extenuating circumstances, it's unlikely the Twins move up or down the draft ladder much in the next seven weeks.
  11. A player that won't embarrass himself in centerfield. To accomplish this internally, the Twins would have to sacrifice an actual prospect's development and rush him to the Majors and/or they'd have to add people to the 40 man for no good reason. This is the kind of move that the Twins should be making at this point. Patch a hole for two months and reevaluate in the offseason. After the Hicks fiasco, are we really slamming the front office for showing some prudence with their outfield prospects?
  12. They need someone who can play CF in a pinch. Rosario isn't ready, Buxton isn't ready, and Hicks shouldn't be within 500 miles of an MLB roster until he gets his head straight. That doesn't mean those three players are any less of prospects or that somehow their talent is diminished, it just means they aren't ready to play Major League Baseball in August of 2014.
  13. They just need a warm body to occupy the bench for the rest of the season. This move doesn't surprise me at all.
  14. And they're on pace to beat that by 2.5 games so it seems pretty accurate at this point.
  15. Indeed. As an "optimist", I came into the season expecting 71-73 wins.
  16. I'm not knocking Plouffe at all, btw. I think he's a pretty versatile option if used correctly. If you give him time at third, spot start him in LF/RF, and use him in a semi-platoon role, he's a fantastic guy to have on the roster. Can Plouffe start every day in the OF? I'm skeptical. I don't see enough bat for him to play in a corner outfield spot every day and his defense certainly isn't going to make up for any offensive shortcomings.
  17. Indeed. Plouffe already broke out to become the league average player he is today. Sure, he's shown marginal improvement to become a slightly more rounded hitter and a better defender but I think it's pretty safe to say he is who he is as a player.
  18. Is it? Suzuki's .811 OPS in July was his best of the season.
  19. I can give you one if it'll make you feel better.
  20. This team is friggin' unwatchable.
  21. 1. Steal My Sunshine - LEN 2. Tiptoe through the Tulips - Tiny Tim 3. Ninja Rap - Vanilla Ice I'll shoot myself before I get to four so I don't need to post a full list.
  22. I don't know if it's the foot but something has changed. Suzuki is currently posting five-year bests in the following categories: Swinging Strike % Contact % Swing % Outside Zone Swing % Is all of this luck? It's possible but when a guy is swinging less and making better contact than he has in five years, there's at least a decent chance that something significant has changed in his swing. Even if his BABIP drops next season, the fact that he's putting wood on good pitches and swinging less at bad pitches leads me to believe that something bigger than "luck" is involved in his 2014 success.
  23. I'm a very patient man when it comes to prospects. With that said, I'm to the eye-rolling point every time I see May throw another start in Rochester. There is simply no good reason why he isn't starting in Minnesota.
  24. This software is freakin' amazing. It has this rad variable replacement system for adding media. I can declare the variable in the URL and match that variable to an embed code that renders the HTML. That allows me to lock out HTML for users while still having a lot of flexibility to insert predetermined HTML into posts. Long story short, if you find embed code we think should be added, I can generally set up embeds for that site within 20 minutes or so.
