  1. That's an interesting concept. Attempt to "break" the format by intentionally turning a single game playoff into a bullpen game. I'm not sure if I'd advocate that approach but it's an interesting one and something that deserves consideration, for sure. What would a single game playoff look like if the Twins went May, Milone, Berrios, bullpen? It would definitely keep the opposition off-balance. May brings in the right-handed heat to start the game. After going through the lineup once, you rotate over to a soft-tossing lefty, then put in another hard-throwing righty the third time through the lineup. Hand it off to the pen and call it a day. That approach would have to increase the Twins' chances of winning. How would hitters react going from May to Milone? I can't imagine it'd be easy for them.
  2. This is my feeling as well. They'll give Ricky one more shot and if he stumbles again, I think they'll consider removing him from the roster. When healthy, he's not a great pitcher but he's a serviceable one. Personally, like many Twins fans, I hold nothing but contempt for the guy. I wish he was off the roster but I'm not ready to kick him to the curb for nothing, either.
  3. My thoughts exactly.
  4. Win 64. Game #: 2015: 125 2014: 151 2013: 148 2012: 155 2011: n/a The 2015 Twins are now 23 games ahead of the next closest team.
  5. How is it so different from the NFL, where wild card winners play an extra week while the two top division winners get to rest after a grueling season?
  6. Toronto took the lead over the Rangers in the ninth. The Twins are on the verge of being only half a game out of the WC.
  7. That Sano kid might be a keeper. Time will tell.
  8. I think my point can be summed up with a simple line that explains the fallacy of this argument: "Evolution is only a theory" returns 189,000,000 Google results. Mass misuse of a technical term with a specific meaning does not validate that misuse. This isn't the transformation of a layman, colloquial term like "gay". It's a specific business term used to discuss business dealings. If we're going to criticize a front office for mishandling its business - and certainly if we're going to imply incompetence because they don't understand these business principles - then I think it'd be best to at least get the terminology correct.
  9. I'm not saying it's not a good idea, I'm saying it won't happen because it means everybody involved takes a pay cut. A handful of extra playoff games don't counteract the loss of 120 (!) regular season games.
  10. I don't see baseball cutting back the regular season. Ten games is a lot of butts not in seats, a lot of television ad space not being bought. The same goes for removing divisions. Too many regional rivalries live on through those division matchups. If it costs owners money and provides no tangible benefit for the players and their union, it's not going to happen.
  11. I think adding a third division and the WC were the best things to happen to the sport since the DH.
  12. On top of that, there were seven Kaisers between the Austrian and German Empires, the last of which were ousted 97 years ago. It's only a title and an outdated one at that. If you believe it to be an insult, I'm not sure what to say. It's no different than Caesar... In fact, they're the same friggin' word in different languages. In short, there are plenty of things in this world to find insulting. This is not one of them. Reel in the outrage and keep it on topic.
  13. It's entirely possible, for sure. The Twins also have a handful of September games against teams who are likely playing AAAA chaff or prospects in September. They close out the season against the Royals, who will almost surely be on full-blown autopilot by that point, resting their best players in preparation for the postseason.
  14. I think that's the best part of the WC format. A WC winner shouldn't be on equal footing to a division champion. If they wanted an advantage, they should have won the division. Baseball is a far more level playing field than any other sport. Home field advantage in the playoffs isn't as significant as it is in other sports, as the best teams in baseball only win 60% of their games, maybe 70% of their home games. Giving those better teams a leg up for winning the division helps the best teams advance in the postseason. I think that's a good thing.
  15. I don't know if anyone is that much higher or lower on Jorge, as we were a pretty split bunch in the first place. But I think getting Santana out of Minnesota played a role in Polanco talk. Once Danny was gone, there was little need to worry about SS in the short term, as it was no longer killing the team and it's really hard to argue convincingly that Polanco is a big upgrade over Escobar. I think you'll see a lot more talk about Polanco the moment the 2015 regular season is complete (assuming the Twins do not make the playoffs).
  16. It's a bit unfortunate Gordon took time to adjust to low A ball. Since July 1st, his OPS is around .790. It would have been nice to see him get a few reps in Ft. Myers before the end of the season and potentially make 2016 a two-level season. There's still a chance of that happening, though. Maybe most importantly, we've seen his extra base power manifest a little since early in the season. April-June: 11 XBH, 66 games July-August: 16 XBH, 43 games
  17. One of five starting pitchers tends to be either injured or ineffective by early to mid May, which allows Berrios to get a shot relatively early in the season. Given that it's all of 3-6 weeks but adds a year of service time, I don't think that will kill the 2016 Twins. Yeah, maybe Berrios gets injured but I'll trade a few weeks in 2016 for a year in 2023-ish any time.
  18. I agree making the division more important relative to the WC is a good goal but I disagree with the solution.
  19. I won't rule out the Twins using that as an excuse in 2016, just stating that they shouldn't (unless Berrios is truly wearing down and underperforming).
  20. It's my opinion the Twins really need 2 of 3 in this series. Teams receive limited opportunities against WC teams outside the division. The Twins need to do all they can with those limited opportunities... And they've done a pretty good job of it lately, at least against the teams they have a chance of catching. Two of three against the Rangers. Four of four against the Orioles. The Twins were never going to catch the Yankees or Jays so I find those series less important, though it would have been nice to accumulate at least one win against those clubs. Argh.
  21. There's not even a little bit of doubt about that. It's far easier to sneak a single win against a superior team than it is to beat them three out of five times. That's why I kinda hate the current WC format.
  22. Meaningless? Possibly. Wrong? No, absolutely not.
  23. The 2018-2022 Twins will also need good players. If a player is good enough, there's always room for him on a team. Draft the player you feel is going to bring the most to the field and call it a day. Don't try to get cute with attempting to project needs 24+ months into the future or worry about when a player will hit the field at the detriment of how good he'll be when he gets there. It'd be nice to have Turner on the 2015 Twins but in 2019, there's a decent chance we'll be happier to see Gordon on the field. Time will tell. The last time the Twins appeared to draft for need was Levi Michael. That... was a mistake. Though in defense of the Twins, no one drafted after him in the first or supplemental round has had a positive impact on their respective MLB clubs.
