  1. That's quite a leap of faith. I like Kepler as much as the next guy but after seeing Hicks and Buxton scuffle, we shouldn't put too much faith in a guy with one good season under his belt, a season where he had good peripherals but a troublesome BABIP. Many crucified Ryan for how he handled Hicks and now we want him to do the same thing to Kepler.
  2. I haven't read a scouting report on Kepler that suggested he could play CF in 2-3 years. And even if someone said that, Aaron Hicks was touted as a plus defender right out of the minors and was various levels of bad for two seasons as he adjusted. We can't assume that your alignment would be an improvement, much less a major one.
  3. It's hard to claim the team defense would be "much better". You're rotating out a plus defender at third and rotating in what you *hope* is a plus defender in right. Like somebody else said, this isn't a video game. A lot of assumptions are being made without much evidence to support them. Your alignment very well could be an improvement. It could be neutral. It could be a downgrade. We simply do not know.
  4. And that's a fair point. I didn't mind the Abad signing. It's also possible he loses a couple of games before they figure out he's not very good. It's a risk.
  5. Bastardo throws with his left hand and has a career LHB OPS against of .595. I understand not picking up a righty - I don't necessarily agree but I get it - but failing to pick up a decent lefty is egregious in my eyes.
  6. Its hard to say with a straight face that the NL is on equal footing with the AL right now. The NL has a handful of *really* tough teams and a slew of terrible ball clubs. Meanwhile, 12-14 of AL teams can beat anyone on any given night. There's a reason the AL was a whopping 34 games over .500 in interleague play last season.
  7. Yeah, it's not comparable. The Braves had a worse record than every AL team and didn't even finish last in the NLE. Meanwhile, the NLC had three 97+ win teams. The NL is extremely unbalanced right now.
  8. For good reason. The way they're commonly implemented, they do more harm than good. The problem isn't bunting, it's that too many MLB managers don't understand math.
  9. If that's the case, don't say anything. Punt on the question, mumble something about "lots of options" and then move on to the next reporter. Saying this in February makes no sense.
  10. Rubio is infinitely more electable in a general. He avoids directly insulting >50% of the electorate. Trump may be able to pull this **** in the primaries and feed off GOP infighting but it's a losing strategy when everybody gets a voice, not only the fringe nut jobs. And now that he's said and done all this ridiculous crap, he can't walk back from it in the general. Clinton will have a field day with that clown.
  11. Yeah, I think that's a byproduct of one league scrapping it out with several good-to-mediocre teams while the other has a large gulf between good and bad.
  12. Yeah, there were other options. Santana and Garza were available that offseason. I liked picking up a decent starter, was unsure why they chose Nolasco over the other guys. Though in all fairness, we still have no idea what a "good" Ricky Nolasco looks like. Ricky was coming off three consecutive 190+ inning seasons so we can't blame the Twins for choosing the guy who suddenly decided to turn injury prone.
  13. None of those guys get enough of a pay raise to matter before 2019-2020.
  14. I didn't like the Hughes extension but I dislike it less than the Santana contract.
  15. The Nolasco contract didn't bother me at the time but it has been a disaster thus far. The Santana contract bothered me more, as I felt the rotation was either good enough as-is or it needed one significant upgrade. Straddling the fence with a somewhat expensive #3 pitcher didn't impress me.
  16. Mike Bates wrote this article. Seth made a boo-boo while posting it so his name appears in the forums.
  17. Nooooooooo bunting. Not from the second guy in the lineup, anyway, and never before the eighth inning. It's counter-productive to give away an out when the heart of the lineup is coming to the plate.
  18. Any decent free agent signing is going to involve eating money on the back end of the contract. I have no problems replacing a bad 2018 Mauer contract with a bad 2019 Cueto contract. The Twins get a three year window of improved competition and it's likely they can still afford at least one of Sano/Buxton, maybe even both. The Nolasco and Santana deals cannot end quickly enough for me.
  19. This was obviously part of a larger speech but it's still hilarious (in a very sad, depressing sort of way). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXiK9xas7KU
  20. I think it's a bit more complex than that, as I don't believe Hoyer is an empty chair with Epstein playing puppeteer. I don't know who gets final say over what but I think Hoyer has a voice in the organization.
  21. Well, some teams have started restructuring their front office model and it will be interesting to see how it plays out in time. Guys like Epstein and Beane are no longer General Managers, they're now Presidents but still appear to have a hand in how the baseball team is run on a daily basis. In the traditional model, the President is a DSP type of guy who is more involved at an executive business level than a baseball level.
  22. This is pretty much how I feel about it. I thought this offseason was the time to shore up some holes and while Ryan did that, he didn't do a great job of it. I'm not sure he's wired in the right way to build a championship team. I like his approach during a rebuild but when it comes time to pick up that final piece and go deep into the postseason, his conservative nature bites him in the ass. But maybe he's right. Maybe the bullpen will fix itself internally... But I'm skeptical, to say the least.
  23. Yep, this. We've had multiple personal insults, name-calling, gross oversimplification of opposing viewpoints, poorly-constructed arguments... We've pretty much run the gamut in this thread. Twins Daily is not Twitter. It is not the Strib comments section. We expect civility and mature discourse. The problem isn't the negativity, it's the way arguments have been framed. If you don't like it, feel free to migrate over to one of the aforementioned sites. We expect better on Twins Daily. It's not a high bar to set but unfortunately, it's a bar rarely reached in internet discussion. There are plenty of places on the internet to argue like a bunch of five year olds. This isn't one of them.
