  1. Either way, my hope was Mauer wouldn't be standing on first, he'd be on second. Or Buxton would have grounded out and he'd be standing on first, creating the same situation. 3-1 count, the pitcher *had* to get it over the plate. Molitor should have enough faith in Buxton that he'd make contact.
  2. There's a damned good chance the Twins lose 2-1 in nine without Buxton running. And now they've just won 3-2 because, again, Byron Buxton is *really fast*.
  3. Buxton ended up scoring the only run that inning. I have a hard time complaining too much about taking out one of the slower guys on the team and replacing him with one of the fastest guys in the league. The Twins needed one run and they got it at least in part due to Buxton's speed.
  4. If you don't feel comfortable letting a guy swing away on a 3-1 count, he shouldn't be on the MLB team.
  5. Only if they come in the same inning.
  6. Well, double plays suck but runs are awesome.
  7. Nunez will probably bat again and he's safe without a perfect throw. And I'm not sure Escobar is faster than Nunez... Which means you punch run Buxton, lose him, and Nunez is also out of the game. The bench is depleted for very little reason.
  8. Yep. If it takes a perfect throw to get a guy at the plate, then you tip your cap to the defender and get on with your day.
  9. I imagine Molitor's thinking is "he's fast enough". And really, I can't fault that thinking. Nunez is red hot; you don't want to pull that guy because you have a guy that's even faster on the bench.
  10. In situations such as this, we can't allow ourselves to be swayed by a single day of play. But we need to revisit this at least once a week, maybe twice.
  11. Which puts him right around league average, which is around the ceiling I had on the guy. I never expected an OPS well into the 700s. Given his apparent defensive acumen, a league average bat makes him a competent player.
  12. Well, he didn't do particularly well in some very important peripherals and many people are blaming it on Kohl's mechanics. If a guy is struggling with mechanics, you don't promote that guy... After all, MiLB is a development league. It's used to, well, develop players. And if a guy is putting up mediocre numbers, you keep him down for another year to allow him to work on the things that will help him succeed at a higher level. If a guy is kicking furiously to keep his head above water, it's hard to work on the smaller things that will help him down the road. He's working as hard as he can just to keep breathing... And when that happens, you relax the pressure on the kid and give him an environment where he has the time and capability to work on those things, the things that really matter in the long run and will dictate his success/failure. Most scouting reports on Stewart said he was going to be a work in progress, I'm not sure why this is so surprising to people. This is what a work in progress looks like and we should be happy it appears he has started to turn the corner and have real, legitimate success, level of competition be damned.
  13. Yeah, it's highly improbable he'll continue to OPS over 1.000 and he's due to regress in some areas but I can't recall him having this kind of success since the concussion. Even when he had good stretches, the strikeouts were still present and he wasn't squaring up the ball. Those things haven't been a problem this season.
  14. It appears the Eduardo mojo is still running strong on the Twins, it merely switched Eduardos.
  15. Oh, I know... There are plenty of Japanese players who have done just fine in MLB. Just taking a swipe at the two players the Twins chose to sign from those leagues.
  16. I don't know what kind of defensive baseball they play in Korea and Japan but it sure doesn't have much in common with the American version.
  17. Damn. I was hoping for more than two there but Weaver looks so bad I can't see the Twins not scoring more against him.
  18. Miguel can't buy a break. That was a nicely roped ball.
  19. There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. A high-powered mutant of some kind never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.
  20. The man is unstoppable. He is a baseball force, an enigma with a bat.
  21. Last night's throw was great but it wasn't any more impressive than Sano's canon throw to home two nights ago. Unfortunately, Miguel threw it a bit *too hard* but damn, that was a rifle shot.
  22. The problem with this statement is that it's damned near impossible to have "a lot" of value when playing the short side of a platoon. That player is useful one, maybe two, times a week for six innings at a time. After that, he will face a righty. Every. Single. Time. Every bullpen in baseball has a righty available at any point in the game. Add in the fact that only ~30% of starters are left-handed and you have a player that gets *maybe* 125 useful PAs in a full season.
