  1. I don't think this team is that far from contending. On the other hand, assembling a rotation is the hardest thing to do in baseball. Some of that talent will have to be home grown (here's looking at you, Gibson). Diamond, Gibson, and perhaps a return of Scott Baker might be enough to right the ship. I don't have much faith in anyone else in the system, excepting perhaps Hendriks. The Twins are going to have to make a free agent splash. The question is: when should they do it? 2013? 2014? I tend to think 2014 is the better bet, as it will coincide with the first wave of Arcia/Hicks/Rosario/Sano reaching the majors. In the meantime, what should they do? I think it's a good idea to turn possible redundancies into prospects. Span is the easy choice. Maybe Willingham next season. The Twins are going to have a glut of outfielders arriving at the same time. Perkins should be offered but not necessarily traded if the deal isn't right. And punt on whatever you can get for Capps, Doumit, etc. this deadline.
  2. Well, that's certainly interesting. I cannot get it to replicate the error using IE9 under Win7. Anyone else having problems?
  3. I see what you're talking about now... Are you using IE7? If so, is there any way you can upgrade the browser? IE7 is used by well under 5% of our users... I'd like to convince people to upgrade if possible. It's a really terrible browser. Here's the link to the IE8 download (or even better, switch to Firefox or Chrome if possible): http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=43
  4. What version of IE are you using? I've checked it in both IE8 and 9... Don't see anything strange about the ads on the right.
  5. Willingham should probably be shopped but I don't think teams will be falling over themselves to give up much for him nor do I think the Twins are that keen on trading him (and I can't blame them).
  6. Whoops, no one started a thread today. Twins Span, CF Revere, RF Willingham, LF Morneau, 1B Ploufe, 3B Doumit, C Dozier, SS Carroll, 2B Diamond, P Pirates Tabata, LF Harrison, RF McCutchen, CF McGehee, 1B Walker, 2B Alvarez, 3B Barajas, C Barmes, SS Correia, P
  7. Marquis has all the makings of a back-end NL starter. I have no ill will toward the guy, I just thought it was a pretty bad signing by Ryan.
  8. As annoying as it is, I'm pretty sure the front office is going to deal Capps (yay!) and slot Perkins into the closer role next season. I'm down with retaining Perkins but I'm not down with giving a lefty the ninth inning... Or anyone the ninth inning, really. It's so much more efficient to use your best bullpen guys when they're needed most and that's usually not the ninth inning. Plus, if you don't declare a "closer", you don't have to pay anyone on the roster "closer" money.
  9. I don't think anyone on this roster should be untouchable. This team is going to be bad for at least two more years. If someone is willing to pay for a player, you take it. No one outside of Dozier, Revere, Diamond, and maybe Plouffe are under team control for 4+ years and have futures with the club and I'd trade any of them if the deal was right. They're not exactly blue-chippers. Obviously, Mauer isn't going anywhere but he hardly makes up a "core".
  10. It's certainly more difficult to draw walks if a pitcher isn't afraid of the ball leaving the park or hitting the wall but it's not impossible. The Twins have a good example of a player just like that on the roster: Eddie Munster. I mean, Jamey Carroll.
  11. It has always driven me nuts that David Ortiz (or any Williams Shift victims) doesn't lay a bunt down the third base line now and again. If he gets it past the pitcher (a lot easier to do than trying to "deaden" a bunt), he has an automatic base hit. The result is that third basemen and shortstops would be forced to start playing him more honestly. The result of that is more base hits when he actually swings the bat. I've long wondered if this stubbornness is due to the player not wanting to learn how to bunt or whether it's another case of baseball managers completely ignoring a logical solution to a problem in favor of doing what everyone else is doing. The average baseball manager hasn't proven himself to be terribly bright when it comes to applying logic to a situation and finding a solution to a new (or in this case, ancient) problem.
  12. Plouffe's value is still virtually zero. No team will give up anything worthwhile for a guy that struggled through the six years of minor league ball and had one good month.
  13. White Sox Interactive is always full of hilarity, Chicken Little conversation, and usually quite a bit of anger. http://www.whitesoxinteractive.com/vbulletin/
  14. There is little point to the Twins trading Morneau unless they have their eyes on a big FA acquisition this offseason *snorts*. His value is virtually nothing right now. It will do one of two things: bottom out completely (another injury/concussion) or it will rise drastically (continues posting an .850 or better OPS for an entire season). With that in mind, hold on to him until at least the offseason unless someone comes at you with a ridiculous offer. On the other hand, if you think you can't compete this year or next, offload Josh Willingham at the deadline. It's doubtful his value will be any higher than it is right now. If nobody bites, keep him. No loss there.
  15. Trout is definitely in the lead by a longshot but, like Diamond, there's definitely some regression waiting to happen with the kid. He's currently rocking a .400 BABIP. Yes, .400. That's absurd and should take a significant nosedive through the summer months. For comparison, George Brett had a BABIP of .368 the year he hit .390. Guys occasionally sport a BABIP close to .400 for a season but those guys have a tendency to play in Little League parks and have names like "Josh Hamilton".
  16. Truly a fantastic article, Parker. Great work.
  17. Josh Willingham isn't even in the top 15 vote getters for outfielders. He's fourth in the league in OPS, third in OBP. Joe doesn't have a lot to complain about.
  18. Jamey Carroll - Eddie Munster Justin Morneau - Greg Louganis Ben Revere - Bojangles
  19. I'm less than five miles from the stadium as the crow flies and I don't think it has rained here in three hours.
  20. It's actually a really good system for filling the back of a rotation... Which is where most guys are going to slot into a major league rotation. Radke, Silva, Blackburn, Kyle Lohse, hell even Scott Baker to an extent... They've all been good to very good pitchers for the Twins over a period of multiple seasons based on the idea that if you throw a bunch of strikes, you'll do pretty well as a pitcher. Scott Diamond looks to be another guy squarely in that mold. I don't think the Twins need to drastically alter their strategy going forward. It's fine to use that methodology for your guys that don't throw in the mid-90s and have no plus out pitch. Instead of those guys scuffling through the minors, you can turn them into a productive major league pitcher by playing to their strength. In my opinion, the Twins' problem isn't that they teach guys without great stuff to pitch to contact, it's that they draft so many guys who don't have great stuff. I think they really need to re-evaluate how they rate pitchers in the draft and not stick so stubbornly to one type of pitcher. I don't mind that the inevitable "pitch to contact" guy comes around and the Twins work with what he has, I have a problem with how many of "that guy" they draft in the first place.
  21. It wouldn't surprise me to find that Baker still thinks it's 2003 and pencils in Mark Prior as his starting pitcher every other day. I can't fault him for forgetting to retaliate for a year or two. Most days, he's just happy that JT saved his kid from getting bowled over at the plate last October.
  22. I find that particularly funny because I seem to remember Nick howling about Blackburn's contract when he received it... Maybe I'm wrong but I don't think he was a fan of the deal at all (since there seemed to be no real point in making it in the first place).
  23. What's so bad about a 4.40 FIP when the guy never projected to be more than a back-of-the-rotation starter? The AL average FIP for those two seasons were 4.33 and 4.42. Nick Blackburn's FIP was roughly league average those two seasons. He got a little lucky and his performed at a slightly above average clip in ERA and other traditional stats. I'll take that out of a back-of-the-rotation guy all day and never complain one bit.
  24. People tend to ignore that Greg had far more than just impeccable control. He had some nasty pitches to go along with that pinpoint command, striking out over 6 per 9 in his career, over 7 per 9 during his quite lengthy prime. He also kept the ball on the ground (over 50% of all balls hit, I believe) and contained homeruns. Early in his career, he threw in the low-90s and spent his prime throwing 89-91 MPH. In short, Greg Maddux had a lot more going for him than perfect command and the best pitching brain in the majors. He had a hell of a lot of talent to go along with it. I'd hesitate to mention his name when comping him to any other major league pitcher I've ever seen.
  25. Yeah, you can't really fault Blackburn's first two seasons with the club. He never projected to be much of anything but performed very consistently for a soft-tosser. He was better than league average over that span. What more do you want out of a guy whose favorite phrases are "pitch to contact", "put sink on it", and "let the defense play"?
