  1. Ryan was not the GM when Dickey signed with the Twins nor was he the GM when the Twins let Dickey go. Pretty hard to pin that one on Ryan.
  2. I was wondering which inconsequential signing would invoke Dave to creating one of these threads...
  3. Enforce congeniality on a message board and you'll find yourself with an unpopulated message board.
  4. Just a reminder but when you see name-calling, click on the grey triangle with the exclamation point in it (you'll see it just below the post). That will notify an admin and someone will take a look at the post. As this community grows, people are going to be more rude. It's just how the Internet works. We try to stay on top of it but none of us can read every post, especially on busy days (this week has been pretty nuts traffic-wise). And so just how does that work when it is an administrator, such as yourself, just yesterday, doing the deed? (remember the recent Twins, Jared Burton Agree on Contract Extension comment thread?) Doing the deed of what? Not calling you names and strongly disagreeing with your opinion?
  5. Yeah, that was a temporary thing I got sorted. It was an "invalid forum" error message.
  6. If you see any issues with posting, using the site, whatever, please let me know in this thread. Thanks.
  7. Honestly, there isn't a lot of data. The problem with hard data and evolution is two-fold: 1. Evolution happens quickly in the grand scheme of things. Large periods of inactivity bookending short periods of rapid change. 2. The fossil record is woefully incomplete and will always be that way. But that doesn't mean that evolution isn't correct. The data we do have all points at the evidence of macro evolution, we just can't draw a linear line through most species because we simply don't have a physical record to track each genetic change along a billion year line. And we never will, if only because of the rarity of natural fossil preservation the enormous amount of time and species we're talking about here.
  8. Stated with grace and respectful aplomb. Well done. In the context of this site, one must occasionally refer to the TD credo at the upper left corner of this page: Independent. In-depth. Irreverent. Individuals. Sabrematricians are very, very sure of themselves and it makes for good business in raising your hits to your webblog. To paraphrase Bierce, what's the point of writing if you can't make someone mad? The problem I have is with the guys like Keith Law who think they have broken the code to the secret of baseball success and then only come up with results like this: The only person in this thread who has quoted anything from a sabermatrician is the guy you just quoted and congratulated. *scratches head*
  9. Dickey and Dempster are similar right now but Dickey is set up to age much more gracefully.
  10. So unless the GM of the Twins robs the opposition blind on every trade and then steals his lunch money, he's doing a bad job? I'd hate to watch sports with that attitude. How do you not hate every single inning of the game with expectations that completely unreasonable? And why watch at all? Masochism? And the Phillies didn't give up a young starter with upside. They gave up a slightly battered young starter that projects as a #3, tops. Is that what you wanted? A mediocre pitcher with little or no upside?
  11. If I'm the Mets, I give Dickey his $26m and shut up. If he comes close to repeating, he can demand a 3/$39m or higher and get it. If he's merely good-to-very-good (which he has been for three years running now), he's worth over $13m a year. If he's anywhere close to his 2012 numbers, he's a $20m or better player. For the Mets, $26m is a very manageable risk. Hell, it's a manageable risk for the Twins when you're talking the kind of upside Dickey can bring. Over the past three seasons, Dickey is a ten win player.
  12. No team is going to give up a Major League ready starter with significant upside for Span. They're just not going to do it. Young, cost-controlled starters with upside are the most valuable commodity in baseball. So Ryan went and got a slightly raw guy (but not too raw, he could end up in AAA this season) for Denard. Almost every baseball analyst not named Dave Cameron thinks this was a neutral trade or a slight win by the Twins and Ryan. You can go ahead and put your stock in Dave Cameron (who has been laughably wrong on some of his analysis over the years) and I'll put my stock in everybody else. Ryan wasn't going to get a good young starter with upside for Span. Denard, while a quite good player, has all sorts of health issues surrounding him and while he's pretty cheap, he's not pre-arbitration cheap over the next three seasons. Ryan had over six months to work out a trade for Span and he sat on it until the right moment when Rizzo looked to be panicking after the Braves snatched Upton off the market. Ryan couldn't have done much better for Span than he did and he absolutely gouged the Phillies front office in the Revere deal. So we have one good trade and one very good/outstanding trade. Yet Ryan is somehow failing to do his job. Ridiculous expectations much? And next time you quote the Holy Grail that is Dave Cameron, read this article about the Figgins signing first. ROFLCOPTER. That's all I have to say about that. http://www.ussmariner.com/2009/12/04/ms-to-sign-figgins/
  13. There's still a lot of offseason to play out before I get worried about the Opening Day lineup.
  14. Sigh, yet another enlightened comment. Please tell me which of the pitchers off the board the Twins should have signed thus far? Last I checked Grienke, Sanchez, Jackson, Marcum, Dempster etc are still on the board. I guess Ryan can't win with some folks, the Twins have the most active winter meetings of any team and yet people are still bitching they didn't do enough. Hasn't anybody told you that they moved the start of Spring Training to December 15th, Dave?
  15. What on earth do you think Ryan should have received in return for Span? And by completely hosing the Phillies front office, Ryan merely did what he was supposed to do? Worley for Revere straight up is a fair trade. I'm amazed that Ryan managed to get them to throw May into the deal. Revere is around a 2.5 WAR player in two seasons. Worley is around a 2.5 WAR player in 1 1/3rd seasons. Both have similar service time. A player-for-player swap would have been fair given the circumstances.
  16. I'd give Dickey more than that for a two year deal.
  17. That's a good way of putting it.
  18. Oh, I'm not arrogant enough to make that call. I don't believe in a personal god but I certainly won't look down on those who choose to accept religion as an answer for the universe's origins. There are just too many question marks surrounding the entire situation to definitively call it one way or the other, in my opinion. But evolution? Nah, that one is pretty much in the bag. We have mountains of evidence to support it and to a rational mind, there's really no questioning that evolution exists. The nitty-gritty details are certainly up for debate but the existence of evolution itself has largely been settled by the scientific community.
  19. It's possible, I suppose. His BABIP has been absurdly low over the past two seasons... But I don't think that has much to do with Safeco. Figgins puts the ball on the ground 40% of the time. Not an extreme amount but if he still had speed, there's no reason for his BABIP to be that low with 40% of his contact turning into groundballs. That probably means two things: 1. He's old and slow now. 2. He's making some really awful contact. And sure enough, his spray chart is ugly. I mean, I don't know if I've ever seen a spray chart like this. It's horrible. Look at all those outs on or around the pitching mound and on the third base grass and look at how few hits he has in the outfield, particularly directly to left, center, and right. That means almost none of his groundballs are getting through the infield. Jesus. For laughs, here is Drew Butera's spray chart. It actually looks good compared to Figgins: What can we learn from this? That Chone Figgins is very, very bad at baseball now.
  20. Agreed 100%. If the Twins pick up Dempster, they're instantly a better team than they were in 2012. If they pick up Marcum and, say, Liriano, they're quite a bit better. If they pick up Marcum, Liriano, and find a way to pull a middle infielder off the market, they're a vastly superior team to the 2012 squad.
  21. I'd give the slight nod to the Revere trade for a few reasons: The pros: 1. One ML guy, one AA prospect. 2. Revere is not as good a player as Span. The con: 1. Meyer is a better prospect than May.
  22. Beltre and Figgins have virtually nothing in common as hitters.
  23. Also note that the good part of Hunter's age 22 OPS came from his time in Salt Lake, a place where I think I could OPS at .700.
  24. Another smart move by Ryan. Hmm, don't hear a lot of people calling for his head this week. Strange.
