Best Names in Baseball

In baseball, there are (and certainly have been) many great names. I thought it'd be fun to have a running thread with great baseball names past and present.

I'm going to start with one of each.

I'll go very recent and choose one from last season's draft class, an outfielder from the Atlanta, Georgia area that went to the University of North Carolina, Oakland Athletics 4th round selection in the 2015 draft, Skye Bolt.

I'd go easy on some of the ones that you know will find their way onto this post right away for a classic name, but instead, I thought I'd dip a little farther. I found a catcher/outfielder from 1881-1884 who carried the nickname "Old Iron Hands", so you know he wasn't in the league for his defense, yet his career slash was a paltry .184/.194/.228, which is why he only lasted four seasons, I'm sure, playing for four teams in those four seasons. His known name was Sleeper Sullivan, though his given name was a patriotic Thomas Jefferson Sullivan, interesting with his Irish birthplace.

Mudcat Grant was a fun guy to watch. Great name, too.

James Timothy Grant played for 14 years, from 1958 to 1971.

Far and away his best season was with the 1965 World Series bound Minnesota Twins, as he went 21-7. Several times he had an ERA better than the 3.30 he posted in 1965, though.

FWIW, he went 2-1 with an ERA of 2.74 in the 1965 World Series.

OK....I'm going to cheat since Seth stole my favorite. Just taking the Twins two world series teams and have a grin.

1) Knoblauch

2) Mack

3) Puckett

4) Hrbek

5) Gaetti

6) Davis

7) Brunansky

8) Laudner

9) Gagne

Honorable mention: Bush, Lombardozzi, Pagliarulo, Leius.

This doesn't even include any pitchers. Lots and lots of consonants and not so many vowels. If you could win by names alone, the Twins would havexpect ad more than the two WS championships.
