How the Cardinals Built their Analytics Department

I know there is a separate thread on the investigation into the Cardinals but I thought the following article didn't exactly fit there.

This article seems to be more on the growth of analytics and how the Cards built their department:

http://m.stltoday.com/sports/baseball/professional/analytical-scrutiny-that-fuels-cards-success-also-fuels-federal-probe/article_4ffcc5ba-7eb1-5f79-9d19-435c3b89eaf0.html?mobile_touch=true

It points out the difficulties of controlling access to data given the movement of personnel between teams.  But that's always been the case as the anecdote about Dave Duncan's "two red trunks" makes clear.

Interesting article.

The definitiion of "intellectual property" is evolving. One could certainly argue that the statistical data and analysis developed and housed electronically by Luhnow in St. Louis actually was the property of his employer the Cardinals.

On the other hand, I don't know why you wouldn't be able to similarly argue that the binders of information that Duncan and, now, Lilliquist, have kept on opposing hitters wouldn't similarly be considered the property of the Cardinals since those pitching coaches gathered the information while employed by the Cardinals and as a part of the jobs they were compensated by the Cardinals to perform.
