  1. I'd say it is more accurate that Wheeler made one relief appearance due to the fact that the Red Wings were rained out in like half their games last week and he had not pitched in 10 days. Turley relieved in that same game, likely for the same reason. I don't think the plan is for them all to stay in the pen. Right now, they have Gibson, Berrios, Mejia, Hurlbut "for sure" and the choice of Slegers, Turley and Wheeler. Wheeler has pitched better than Slegers this year. If they wanted to simply bump someone, it would more likely have been him. And it re-emphasizes that the Twins didn't need to comb the waiver wire for a "quick fix" when they had 2-3 in Rochester that could have done the job just as easily.
  2. It would make little sense to claim a guy, add him to your 40 man roster and then release him after one start. Especially when there are at least two down in AAA who have similar qualifications (Wheeler and Hurlbut). Correct me if I am wrong, if the Twins DFA and he is NOT claimed, aren't the Twins on the hook for his salary for the rest of the year? I don't know how it works with these minor league/major league split guys that are pre-arb. Are the Twins on the hook for Tonkin's salary (paltry though it is) if he doesn't get claimed?
  3. OK. Don't want to call up Berrios, fine. Why Wilk? Why go out and get someone who has never been successful at AAA? David Hurlbut is doing well down there too. Even Jason Wheeler has better AAA numbers than Wilk.
  4. Then why send Gibson down? Gibson is bad, but IMO he's better than Wilk.
  5. Santiago and Santana went to the WBC too.
  6. Just checking to see who is still buying the company line. I'll hang up and listen.
  7. Maybe they just feel Wilk needs to pitch to an expert framer.
  8. They already have Gibson, Mejia, Wheeler, Hurlbut, Slegers and Turley. How many more starters do they need?
  9. Maybe the goal is to get Paul Molitor to say "Are you ******* kidding me? You want me to START this ****??? I QUIT!!"
  10. I hope Falvey has an explanation that satisfies the players or he risks losing their respect and possibly their effort in a real hurry.
  11. Wonder what they think about the acquisition of Wilk, potentially to start Saturday. It's a good way to sow clubhouse discontent in a real hurry.
  12. I saw that too. **shakes head** Can we break out the pitchforks now or should we wait until we hear the company lie? Oops, darn auto correct. I meant "line". Or did I?
  13. I actually don't think so. Terry Ryan was more in love with his own prospects. He wouldn't go outside midseason unless he had to. If Wilk does start Saturday it speaks volumes as to what Falvey thinks of Berrios specifically and the Twins pitching prospects in general. At least two should be promoted to AAA.
  14. Gibson won't be eligible, unless someone was placed on the DL.
  15. Might be all the more reason to keep them. To see what has changed and what has not.
  16. The Twins may not be saying anything publicly, but their actions sure indicate that Berrios will start Saturday. Duffey threw 15 pitches Sunday and 18 yesterday. Not going to be him. Haley looked awful Sunday. I'm almost surprised he didn't land back on the DL - perhaps he still will. No way is it him IMO. Gibson will not have been down for ten days by Saturday. Can't be him. Hurlbut pitches tonight. Won't be him. Wheeler, Slegers and Turley all pitched Monday. Wheeler pitched poorly. And if the plan was to bring up Slegers or Turley, they would logically have pitched longer than they did on Monday. That leaves Mejia and Berrios as realistic choices. Mejia, who pitched poorly in his last outing, would be slated to start tomorrow. If he does, that pretty much makes it official.
  17. I think he's been very different since coming up in July last year. BB rate is way up. In 2015 he had 9 BB in 184 PA. In 2016, 24 BB in 177 PA. HUGE improvement. K rate hasn't changed much, but it is still better than Sano's at the MLB level. It shows that he is waiting for his pitch and then clobbering it. We always knew that was his game. Getting his pitch and hitting it. Prior to last season he seemed unwilling to wait for it and that is why he is doing so well IMO. He hasn't walked much yet so far, but with 4 HR in 40 at bats, I suspect pitchers will start giving him less to see. It's on him to continue to show he won't chase. He has only 9 K so far, so he certainly isn't flailing away.
  18. Kepler does need to face lefties if he is ever going to improve against them. I have no problem with him getting a day off roughly once every other week. And ideally it would be against a lefty. Not so much because he struggles against them, but because his replacement (Grossman) historically hammers them.
  19. Mijares pitched briefly (and very poorly) at AAA in mid 2007 and went back down to AA. It looks like he missed the early part of 2008, started with the GCL Twins in June of 2008, moving up to Fort Myers and then the Rock Cats before coming up in from AA in September of 2008. As I recall that was largely a case of the Twins wanting him to get more innings and the minor leagues were already done. Plus Mijares started the next season at AAA. Wasn't there very long and perhaps should not have been in any case, but he did.
  20. Saying that the Twins CAN get a MLB reliever for Grossman isn't a total guess? Clearly the Twins need pitchers more than they need a guy like Grossman, even as good as he has been this year and last. Unless you feel Falvey is incompetent, why else wouldn't he make that deal if it were out there?
  21. You mean major leaguers can actually learn from peer major leaguers? Huh, I wonder if Berrios could learn more from Ervin Santana than Stu Cliburn, who's probably older than Berrios' grandparents.
  22. Agree. If the Twins were able to receive a capable MLB reliever for Grossman, that move would have already been made.
  23. Not sure why you want Grossman sitting more than Mauer. Grossman was better last year, he's better so far this year. You are also not considering that Sano occasionally plays first or DH. He probably won't get many days truly off. DH might be as close as he gets. If he shows signs of fatigue, you might give him a blow, but I honestly think that's a once a month thing. Really, IMO same with Vargas. 1 day off a week may not sound like much, but that caps him at about 135 games. Should be more like 145 IMO. It obviously won't be this year because he didn't start the year at the MLB level. If you give Grossman two days a week, that projects him to 110 games. The guy is the third or fourth best hitter on the team right now. I don't see how sitting him that often helps. Mauer started 130 games last year between first and DH and that was too many. To keep him fresh and productive, I honestly believe he should be starting no more than 90-100. Edit: when I say "games" above, I mean starts.
