  1. Yes. Not all. But I probably saw 30 of his starts that season.
  2. Obviously as a “broadcaster”. That would be laughable. It would be like Dan Gladden in the Hall as a broadcaster. The broadcasters that are in are true elite immortals. I’m fine with that.
  3. I’m sure he did. But what I am saying is that he gave up meaningless runs in late innings, at least anecdotaly and based on his one season when I saw pretty much all of his starts. If the game was close and he was struggling, he was lifted like any other guy would be. But, if the game was in hand, he was often allowed to save the bullpen at the expense of his ERA.
  4. I’d pay good money to see Vargas attempt to play SS. It would be like Randall McDaniel playing SS.
  5. I think Jack pitched to the score a lot. In today’s game, he would have been taken out of games with big leads. But he was allowed to stay in and rack up innings, and often give up cheap, meaningless runs. PS: In 7 career World Series starts, 4-2 with a 2.96 ERA, 3 CG. In 6 career World Series starts and one relief appearance, Don Drysdale had 3 wins and a 2.95 ERA. In 13 World Series starts, “big game” Andy Pettitte had an ERA north of 4. Don’t kid yourselves, October still matters to the voters.
  6. The voters clearly value tenure over greatness. Greg Gagne is in. Chuck Knoblauch is not. One was way better, relative to his peers, than the other.
  7. I would say there was a very clear line in the AL this past year. The Twins were not nearly as good as the other 4 teams in the playoffs. Not nearly. And even further behind the top two. So, yeah, if no one else in the AL gets better they can make the playoffs with Gibson in the rotation. Didn’t say they couldn’t. But making the playoffs doesn’t make a team a legitimate title contender. The pretenders are pretty quickly dismissed in the current playoff format.
  8. Johan Santana isn’t even a gimme to make the Twins Hall of Fame. I’m pretty sure his Twins career was shorter than anyone else in the Twins HOF. Much like Justin Morneau probably won’t be a Twins HOFer, despite winning an MVP. Right now, Zoilo Versalles is the shortest tenured Twin in the Twins HOF. He spent 7 full seasons plus 2 partial seasons with the Senators. Johan had 6 full seasons and 2 partial seasons in a Twins uniform.
  9. If the Twins don’t have 5 pitchers better than Kyle Gibson, they aren’t legitimate title contenders IMO.
  10. This. Exactly. If you are expecting better results, you are setting yourself up for disappointment. I’m sure those are what Falvine’s expectations are. He’s still very tradeable. Any healthy pitcher is a tradeable commodity.
  11. I don’t think average age of a particular minor league level is a meaningful evaluation. The guys that are prospects are generally younger than “org fill” players at each level. They have to be otherwise they would be completely overmatched.
  12. In the mid 80s, half of all teams were playing on turf. Maybe more. It was a speed era.
  13. Thread should be titled “...bat control”. Plate discipline, to me, means recognition that certain pitches are strikes and certain pitches aren’t. But seeing that early enough to act is what seperates you and me from professional hitters. Granite is exhibiting elite bat control, a la Brian Harper back in the day. It won’t neccesarily lead to more walks, but putting the bat on the ball is pretty much always preferable to not doing so.
  14. A better, more obvious comparison is Sandy Koufax. Of course, one thing Koufax has (and so did Puckett actually) is multiple World Series rings. Not saying that no one without that can get in, but when a guy is borderline, that matters. It did with Bert. It may still with Morris.
  15. I’m not sure if it makes sense to say that O’Rourke likely has several years ahead of him at the MLB level and then rate him below Turley, who still has to prove he can get outs at the MLB level.
  16. Correct me if I am wrong, but I seem to recall part of rule 5 being once you lost a guy, you could protect some more. Is that something I imagined or an actual rule? If true, the gamble is lessened because you really only risk losing one of them. So, say someone takes a flier on Burdi, knowing they can stash him on the DL for at least a couple months. You still would retain other guys you really would like to get a further look at. Unless, I am just remembering wrong.
  17. It’s all about putting players in position to succeed, something Tom Kelly and Andy MacPhail did very well. In this day and age, part of that equation is analytics. That part of the game passed Terry Ryan and Ron Gardenhire by IMO.
  18. Doesn't seem likely that adding a player via rule 5 is something the Twins would try. If 2017 showed the Twins brass nothing else it is that you can't hide a rule 5 guy if you are trying to contend.
  19. Sad. Check out this post in the Boston Red Sox vibe: "Teen Red Sox prospect dies after cancer battle" https://www.yahoo.com/newsroom/vibes/mlb.t.2/v-0921d98e-cdff-3ef9-8fae-1780ae004a1c_c-730ac611-480f-3ac7-91de-602cbba94e5d_a-730ac611-480f-3ac7-91de-602cbba94e5d?soc_src=newsroom&soc_trk=com.apple.UIKit.activity.CopyToPasteboard&.tsrc=newsroom
  20. FWIW, Lackey is by far the active leader in HBP with 133. Next is CC Sabathia with 109. Bronson Aroyo and Ervin Santana are the only other actives over 100. That said, I have no problem with a guy pitching hard inside to make hitters uncomfortable. That is part of the game. A part Twins pitchers have never done enough of IMO.
  21. I’ve mentioned this before, but it is worth repeating. I don’t think it is likely that the Twins would have been able to lure Falvey away from a championship level organization without some kind of assurance of financial commitment from ownership. What exactly that means, I suppose only Falvey and Pohlad know. But my guess is a commitment to be around 15th in the league in payroll.
  22. You know, like Jedi fighting techniques.
  23. Doubt it. There have been plenty of black hitting coaches. Not so many pitching, but odds are a few crossed paths. Dave Stewart was a coach before moving to FO I think. Was Dwight Gooden a coach? Was Bob Gibson ever a coach? Really not a whole lot of black pitchers, period. Usually, IMO, they are too good of athletes to pin down to pitch.
  24. Apparently, it isn’t mobile device friendly. Or, at least not mine.
