  1. College baseball started yesterday at least for Vanderbilt. #2 draft prospect Jeren Kendall went 2 for 4 with a walk and a strikeout and scored both of Vanderbilt's 2 runs. #4 Prospect Kyle Wright took the loss giving up 3 ER on 4 hits and 3 BB throwing 84 pitches over only 5 IP. No, I am not going to do this daily, but I will update the Top 10 or so at the end of March.
  2. Given that I was once a (very, very, VERY) bad catching prospect, and that I have homes in Atlanta and Nashville and travel frequently through Chattanooga, I'll take Brian Navarreto or whomever ends up being the Lookouts primary catcher.
  3. And they are 120:1 to win the World Series. Brewers are worst at 350:1. Cubs are best at 7:2. Cleveland 11:1 Detroit 30:1 KC 50:1 Twins 120:1 White Sox 350:1 Just FYI
  4. As previously promised, I found the first casino offering season O/U. Twins: 70.5 wins 3rd in the AL Central. Thoughts
  5. I have a couple of questions about the 2017 International Signing Period. First, can someone point me to a source describing who might be the top (international) prospects available for signing in 2017? Second, could someone explain the Twins' options? I think I read they have the largest signing pool for International signings, but realistically, how many can they sign? Any help would be appreciated.
  6. Vegas will not release O/U for a few weeks yet-- they wait until all the FA's clear. I'll post it as soon as I can. My guess would be 76-77? Here are, just for our amusement, some hypothetical O/U's: J.O Berrios Wins: O/U 11 Dozier HR's: O/U 30 Buxton Runs: O/U 83 Mauer OBP: O/U .365 Annual (home) attendance: O/U 2,100,000 Thoughts?
  7. It has to be asked: what is the cost of DFAing Joe Mauer? If he's claimed, its a huge savings. If not, a 40 man roster spot opens up. I doubt there are any current advantages, but could it be used in theory to free up cash and or a 40 man roster spot?
  8. So, do we concur that Stewart and Gonsalves are two more # 4 starters of which we have an over abundance?
  9. Sorry-- the Twins' prospects are ranked #11, not #13. Mea Culpa Maxima
  10. KLAW ranks the Twins' prospects as #13. This is the first time in a looong time they have not been Top 10 (Sano and Buxton were promoted). And although #13 is better than average, the opinion is that the field is wide, but with few top prospects: "What they don’t have, at least anywhere at a full-season level, is a future star -- a No. 1 or No. 2 starter, a middle of the order bat, a potential MVP candidate, nothing quite like that." Keith Law With 3 in the top 40 picks this draft season, I suspect the prospect ranking will once again go into the Top 10 and the Twins' fans cry of NOT "wait until next year..." but "wait, umm, four to six years from now", will yet again prevail. Again, thanks for everyone's input.
  11. How many teams will be "in contention" by the trading deadline? Maybe 20? Subtract the number of those in the AL Central then multiply that by the probability that a team's starting 2B is injured and you get at least one team that will pay or even overpay for Dozier. (The math is completely made up, but...) And, by then, the Minnesota Twins' AAAA (half way between majors and AAA) roster will evolve where they have a better idea what is valuable. Its a lesser outcome than the daydream of Dozier for 3 Dodgers' prospects, but it "ain't bad".
  12. Thank you everyone for keeping this discussion going. Just to clarify a couple of items: that our best (pure?) bat is ranked is good. That its ranked so low is bad. But then again, generating runs isn't the Twins' top priority. My primary point is that I, along with I assume some of you, were hoping we had some great SP arms. I was disappointed less in Gonsalves' rank (any SP ranked among the top 100 in mLB is good), but that KLAW saw such a limited upside and that, with Gonsalves, the Twins' deepest position might be "back-of-the-rotation 5.00 ERA, 1.40 WHIP starter".
  13. Keith Law's pre-season rankings are dribbling out. Alex Kirilloff is ranked, which is good, but Law throws shade on the rest of the Twins' prospect bats by suggesting he, at #97 is the best bat in the organization. But the point of this post is that Keith Law also ranks Gonsalves. I guess that would be good news, but he damns him with very faint praise: 45 fastball, 30, yes 30 breaking ball and maybe an average (45? 50?) cutter. And an increase in strike rates. Oh, and Law sees no role (not even as a reliever) for Kohl Stewart. Overall Good News: Of the only 20 Top 100 announced, three are Twins. Simple math (100 / 30 teams) suggest that each team should, on average have 3 prospects. That the twins have three announced already is a positive vote for the depth. Overall Bad News: I hope the jury is still out on Kirilloff, but being names is not bad. But a third-party opinion that two highly regarded prospects could be, at best, a #4 starter (of which the Twins have an abundance) and may not be even a reliever has to be a blow.
  14. Not necessarily. Many times a third baseman plays level to the bag while a SS plays deep in the hole. This has two effects. First, the ball gets to the 3B quicker than it would get to the SS. Second, a ground ball hit to the SS's right might only be caught maybe 30 full feet deeper than where the 3B plays. Also, unless your first name is Brooks (yes, I am old), almost all 3B throws are straight-forward, whereas a SS might have to throw off balance.
  15. Although it would be fun to have Will Smith, the actor, hanging around Target field, Will Smith, the catcher might be a better piece.
