  1. Confusing for sure. I understand in Canada night is about four months long this time of year?
  2. That's true, but that's no different than with free agency. At least now the top 10 players from Cuba can't all go to the Dodgers because they won't have the cap room.
  3. A high tide floats all boats. The MLBPA wants any and all contracts to be high as it always helps the players when negotiating new deals via free agency or likely in this case arbitration. Except for those 25-year-old scrubs down in A ball with a wife and young child who likely will never get to the MLB. Screw those guys, they should be happy to play for way less than minimum wage. No need to try to help them with the new CBA.
  4. I don't think I care for that package nearly as much as any rumored Dodger package. I'm not big on Weaver, he looks like a back of the rotation guy at best. He's a very slight right hander with a 91-92 MPH fastball and doesn't have a breaking pitch. He belongs in the NL.
  5. I'm glad the Twins are more active in the DR and Venezuela the last 5-6 years but that was at least a decade too late. Where were they in the late 80's and 90's when the league first started bursting with Latin talent? I'm also glad the Twins have signed some high upside international guys recently but we can't pretend that they are doing all that they can when half of the league was blowing past their draft allotment and made raids on the market. For a team that has been a bottom feeder the last half decade, they should have been doing everything they could to get prospects including going over budget, they absolutely did not do everything they could. That's history now though, the team has new leadership and hopefully less restrictions. We don't need to dwell on past failures if they actively try to rectify them, it doesn't mean we can't acknowledge that these areas used to be past failures though.
  6. Nice research. Those results are about what I would have expected. There seemed to be a shift in philosophy around 2010-11, specifically they tended to draft "safe" picks early, mostly college pitchers. Seth's results above certainly look like a high floor/low ceiling approach by the Twins.
  7. I also hope they aren't still making decisions first and foremost based on attendance/fan support.
  8. Giving away Santiago and taking back Kazmir or McCarthy would be a push as far as rotation spots go in 2017. I'm not sure if the Twins would be willing take on more money or if the Dodgers even actually care to shave payroll. I'd move both Santiago and Santana if feasible. I'd be offering Santana up to any clubs who have asked about Quintana or Archer but are too squeamish about the asking prices. Which should be every team that has asked about Quintana and Archer.
  9. Pfft, been there done that. I stopped losing sleep over those the second time Pelfrey put pen to paper.
  10. I do. I thought the Dodgers were going to lose both of those guys. It makes a ton of sense from both the Twins and Dodgers perspectives to wait for a Dozier trade until these two were sorted out. Seeing it laid out like this makes it look kind of obvious too that these deals likely would have always had to have been figured out first.
  11. Or With the Kenly Jansen deal and the rumored Justin Turner contract, I wonder if it's possible the Twins have already agreed to take back a less than desirable contract from the Dodgers, Scott Kazmir or Brandon McCarthy perhaps? The contracts are ugly but the Twins could probably put either guy to use. What if any trade holdup wasn't about prospects, but was actually contingent on Dodgers re-signing their guys. Perhaps the Twins said they would take on more money but wanted better prospects in return, something the Dodgers would only go for if they signed their two guys back.
  12. If the hold up is truly due to the Twins wanting another useful MLB-ready piece like Brock Stewart but the Dodgers are unwilling to do so, I wonder if a guy like Pedro Baez would be a compromise. He's a BP guy for sure, but looks pretty legit and might even be the Twins closer from the get go. Or maybe the Dodgers already think Baez is more valuable than a guy like Stewart anyway and he's also a deal breaker.
  13. Still waiting for the PTBNL for Arica. Hey, maybe Arcia will be the PTBNL here! SD still has his rights don't they?
  14. The Twins got a PTBNL for Diaz per La Velle (can't copy tweets from work). I wonder if it will be conditioned on whether SD keeps the guy or not.
  15. So San Diego not only traded for Diaz, the first pick but for Luis Torrens the 2nd pick; they also personally had the 3rd pick. All of these guys were in A ball or rookie leagues last years, I am extremely curious about their end-game. Surely they can't carry all three, they didn't figure out a genius loophole in the process did they?
  16. If it's the first one we're going to have riots here. *****Moderator Warning****** If it's the first one, do not riot here, do it in the streets.
  17. Typically if you have the number 1 pick and trade down to the number 10 pick there is additional compensation. There sure better be here, I just checked Haley's stats and yawned. Maybe he'll miss some bats with a move to the pen.
  18. The Reds took two position players. I'd guess the odds that Stuart is back with the Twins is probably quite a bit higher than 50%.
  19. I agree, I'm getting that feeling also. On the other hand I was thinking the White Sox must have thought the same which is why they chose the Red Sox deal and here they are going right back to the Nationals and getting him for Eaton, who upon closer inspection does have a really nice contract and record of consistency. Probably a lot better player than most people would give him credit for. Still, I'm really jealous of the White Sox right now.
  20. The White Sox are about to get Lucas Giolito and others for Adam Eaton. I so hate the White Sox. On the bright side, the Sox got Eaton by trading Hector Santiago and a PTBNL. Surely the Twins can trade Santiago and a PTBNL for a similar return.
  21. Yeah, that's just insane. For one thing, they must have stopped watching baseball about the same time they were mathematically eliminated last year, that being the middle of July, because he was awful after that point just as he was at the end of his career in Washington. For another, Colorado should know by now that a hunchback with tuberculosis holding a broom handle can put up an .800 OPS in Coors Field. Why not just pay Brandon Moss a fraction of what you just gave Desmond to do practically the same thing?
  22. I don't expect Molitor to talk to Sano in the offseason. I would expect there to be some organizational hierarchy that allows for easy and open communication, but that's not Molitor's job in-season let alone during the off season. I'm guessing it's the assistant to the traveling secretary.
  23. I don't think Soler has shown more power in the minors but the guy is 6'4" and goes about 225 and has a pretty powerful swing, I think it's all about projection for him, he looks like he might be a power guy. Maybe. I'm also surprised by this. Does Soler have more value than I'm giving him credit for, or does Wade Davis have less for some reason. With how much money and more importantly years Chapman, Jensen and Melancon are going to get/have got, I'd have thought there would have been a feeding frenzy for one year of Davis.
  24. That's a positive take on the situation, hope that's the angle. I'd think a veteran in this year's poor free agent pitching market would wait quite a bit longer before accepting a MiLB deal, though it looks like when he signed with the Pirates it was on Dec 3, 2015 which likely was during the winter meetings and that must have been a MiLB deal considering he only pitched in the minors for them. Or perhaps there is a trade off, he'll never get a firm guarantee that he'll start if he gets a MLB deal but it would probably be all but certain if he took a MiLB deal, and he's not ready to slot himself into the pen for the rest of his (likely short) career.
  25. It's not that Solar is a terrible player, it's that he is a poor defender and doesn't have any speed which has been what KC built their offense around. He's a square peg on a team created to accommodate round holes. The defensively flexible Javier Baez would make a lot more sense to me. Maybe now that they are going into rebuild mode they'll try another strategy. Or maybe Dayton Moore kind of lucked his way into the previous winning formula and perhaps isn't a great GM, which is what most people were saying prior to the 2014 season.
