  1. I'm a little disappointed that Gonsalves didn't pitch that well yesterday. I hope the Twins still have Gonsalves in AAA to start next year. He still ended his year in AA with an ERA under 2, and struck out over 10 batters per 9 innings. That's dominance enough to move him up a level right away next year. All he really needs to do is work on control, he has greatly improved (according to post game write ups) both his curve and slider. And I have to say, Lachlan Wells intreagues me. Only 19, he has posted some outstanding numbers (over all pitched better than Thorpe did 2 years ago). A 1.77 ERA in A ball at the age of 19? Looks great. I just wonder if his height (5'8"?) will limit his potential over all. Still for now Wells is one worth watching IMO.
  2. Not forgetting that. However it is on Allen in insisting in revamping Berrios mechanics in season. That is an off season thing. Simply put, Allen is the fall guy for not finishing the job of developing Berrios properly. I mean does he have 0 communication between him and Rochester? I mean Berrios success in Rochester stems from doing less. Can't Allen and Eddie Gueradado understand that? I just want Berrios to be sucessful. The Twins need him to develop more at his ceiling, not basement.
  3. There has been no plan all along it seems. Well, the plan was for Sano, Buxton, Berrios, and Kepler to make the team competitive again. Problem #1, the Twins have no clue how to develop promising starting pitching (see Berrios, Gibson), problem #2 Sano and Buxton have not developed into the players (yet) the Twins hoped for. The Twins should have been in full rebuild mode by 2012 after the 99 loss season in '11. But still there is no full commitment to rebuilding the team. Until the Twins understand they have to fully rebuild the team they will just be a crappy run team top to bottom.
  4. So with a mostly positive start for Berrios can it be assumed he'll be back with the Twins? I would...but for the time being I'd put Berrios in the bullpen to raise his confidence. I feel if Berrios can have some confidence in the bigs he will then be just fine.
  5. No Stephen Gonsalves? I mean the main reason he won't hit 160-170 innings this year was being in Ft Myers 6 man rotation far too long. I would have guessed the Twins would work on getting him an extra 20 or so innings before the end of the season. As discussed, there is no way Gonsalves gets called up to the Twins now. That's fine, but to only increase Gonsalves' innings to somewhere between 8-10 innings from last year is pretty pathetic for one of our best pitching prospects (he had pitched 134 innings last year). Let me guess...Gonsalves will also start next year in Chattanooga as well even though he mastered AA ball. Twins way you know...
  6. Sounds promising, especially when a good part of our top pitching prospects will be in the upper minors next year. I am hopeful Tyler will continue to improve and be a part of "the next wave" of higher end pitching prospects.
  7. Well, I think I know who will be the Twins Daily Minor League starter of the month. Yes Fernando Romero gave Stephen Gonsalves a run for his money, but really...1 earned run in August in 5 starts? I do wish I could see Gonsalves pitch with the Twins in September, but it more than likely won't happen (however if Gonsalves did get called up he'd be better off learning what he needs to improve on in the off season). But really, the only real injustice for Gonsalves is for the Twins to keep him in AA to start next season. A 1.64 ERA, 84 k's in 72 innings says he is ready for AAA IMO.
  8. What makes me excited for Romero is that he ended the year strong and injury free. Now he can go into an off season program and come into spring training looking even more prepared and knowledgable than the year before. That's a good thing. I will also say, he will generate a lot more attention from pro scouts next year.
  9. As long as Romero starts next year in Chattanooga not Ft Myers. There is nothing more Romero needs to do in A+ ball next year. He doesn't walk anyone, his k rate is going up, and a 1.88 ERA in 11 starts and his 20 inning scoreless streak to end the season prove its time to pitch at the next level next spring. Hopefully he will split time in AA and AAA next year and be ready for the bigs in 2018.
  10. I think Romero is really comfortable pitching wise. I think his command of his is even better than earlier this year as his strike outs are higher now than earlier this year. Honestly, I think if we base our top prospect on potential alone Romero would easily be our best prospect. I honestly think Romero's upside is even greater than Tyler Jay's upside as a starter given Romero has an absolutely overpowering fastball and possibly a better slider than even Jay. It's a good thing, not a slight at Jay, I just think of all our pitching prospects the only one who has a ceiling as an ace is Romero.
  11. Stewart doesn't seem nearly as good as Gonsalves. It really isn't that close. I mean both don't give up home runs and both have higher walk rates, but Gonsalves has a higher k rate and is practically the same age as Stewart. Idk, at best Stewart looks like a mid rotation starter in the bigs.
  12. I am not suggesting Gonsalves has to have super control, if he has a walk rate around 3 bb/9 innings with his stuff that is fine with me. I was just saying he might want to improve a little so the Twins don't mess with him like they are doing with Berrios and Santiago. If Gonsalves improves on his own he won't need the "corrective" coaching of the Twins MLB staff.
  13. Biggest thing for Berrios is to just r e l a x. Once he did that in Rochester he was back to his dominant self. He has the stuff and command, if he isn't amped up. We all know he is a hard worker and wants to do well, he just has to "do" it. I don't know if pitching in the bullpen will help, it might though especially if Berrios can get a clean inning or two. Obviously I am not suggesting on turning Berrios into a reliever, but have him in the bullpen until he's got the confidence in himself to start. I mean it worked for Johan Santana and Fransico Liriano it could work for Berrios too.
  14. Another great start for Gonsalves. His ERA is now down to 1.78(!). Now, I really think Gonsalves could be a really good pitcher. But for this year he needs to finish in AA, because he needs to improve his control. His last 3 starts have shown some of his control issues as his balls/strike ratio isn't where it should be. It'd be good for Gonsalves to work on control in the off season as we've seen how the Twins staff "fixes" pitchers with questionable control (Hector Santiago, Jose Berrios). Let Gonsalves start next year in Rochester and then go from there.
  15. Another solid start for Romero. Honestly he should be in AA by the start of next season. I think he could be called up to Chattanooga this year, but with the season coming to a close soon for the minor leagues and Romero getting closer to what ever innings limit he may have there is no need to promote him this year.
  16. Do you think Thorpe will pitch any winter baseball in Australia to get him ready for next season? Not to pitch for 2 years with his repartore doesn't sound like a good idea especially with him feeling comfortable with his curve and slider.
  17. I don't mind Stewart, but how the Twins have developed Stewart bothers me. Out of high school Stewart was seen as a power arm with a power repetoire of a mid 90's fast ball, slider, curve, and developing change. Instead of nurturing this the Twins introduced the sinker as Stewart's out pitch. Now unless Stewart is to have a power sinker ala Kevin Brown, Brandon Webb, or Carlos Zambrano there is no reason for Stewart to use a sinker. I don't think making Stewart the next Kyle Gibson, Carlos Silva, Derek Lowe, Aaron Cook, or Jake Westbrooke is a smart decision by the Twins. It's like the Twins were worried power pircher Stewart might have some bumps in the minors so the had Stewart develop the sinker to get "easy" ground outs. For a pitcher who's out pitch is the sinker either you are hittable, have low k numbers, and rely on the defense behind you, or you can have a power sinker that is un hittable with higher strike out totals, but your shoulder may give out by your 5th year in the bigs. I just wish the Twins molded Stewart into the power pitcher we hoped he'd be when he was drafted, not some ground ball inducing sinker ball pitcher.
  18. Also from what I've heard from post game recaps recently is that he has been able to trust his breaking pitches (curve and slider) a lot more this year even though his fastball and change command hasn't been where he wants it. If I remember right MLB scouts wanted to see more from Gonsalves curve/slider and it looks like Gonsalves has responded.
  19. 16 of Gonsalves walks in AA came in 3 starts. In Gonsalves 7 other starts he walked 12. In the 3 starts he walked 4, 5, and 7 batters. In other words he has improved his walk rate.
  20. I don't mind Gonsalves ending this year in AA to help him improve his control. But you are absolutely right, there is no reason Gonsalves shouldn't start next year in Rochester.
  21. I'd get rid of Milone, Plouffe, and Santiago at season's end. And Gibson looks to be a decent trade piece at some time next season. With a pitcher like Gibson who could be slightly better, it's best to sell high as there is more talent that should work their way into the majors next year (Gonsalves, Mejia, Stewart).
  22. So yeah, in his 3 August starts Gonsalves has an ERA of 0.00. While I love what he is doing I am fine keeping him in AA for the rest of this season if anything to help him improve on his control/command because he won't have as much challenge with AAA hitters as many of them are either washed up MLB vets or struggling MLB youngsters (see Byron Buxton) who may have less plate discipline than they should have. Honestly if Gonsalves doesn't start in AAA next year there is something wrong. It also seems this year Gonsalves has had a lot of success with his curve and slider this year leading me to believe that he has improved those pitches a lot this year. I'm excited to see him with the big league team next year.
  23. Fun fact...in all 3 August starts Stephen Gonsalves has pitched 21 innings given up 1 run and no earned runs meaning his August ERA so far is 0.00. Wow...
  24. And oddly enough Gonsalves looks far better in AA than Berrios did initially. In 2014 for New Britian Berrios went 3-4 in 8 starts with a 3.54 ERA and only 28 strike outs in 40 innings. I honestly expected Gonsalves to "struggle" like that, but instead he has gone from an A+ call up to the ace of the staff in Chattanooga in 10 starts. He HAS to be better than what his scouting report said at the beginning of this year. Of course he still has to work on his control. But if that is really all that is keeping him from the majors he defiantly might be even better than we imagined even going into this season.
