I had a bad feeling this would happen to Stewart. I just didn't have high hopes for a low strike out sinkerballer. His control and command is pretty off as well. Let's hope we see another promising start from Romero as I need something good to happen with our pitching prospects.

What is impressive with Lachlan Wells is his command of the strike zone. Sure he is not an overpowering pitcher, but sometimes just having impressive control/command makes up for overpowering "stuff". Hopefully Romero and Stewart get their heads on straight, and hopefully Gonsalves comes back in a big way. Otherwise our hope will be in Berrios, L. Wells, and possibly even Lewis Thorpe.

The only thing I look at on Berrios' stat line is walks and his strike/balls split off of his pitches in each start. I know a.he can and will put up good-great number of strike outs in most AAA starts, and b.he won't give up many hits to AAA batters. But I feel if his walks are down and he is getting a higher % of strikes per each start then he must be improving where it counts.

I think Mejia will be back in the minors within 2 more starts. Even if Mejia looks average I think the "plan" is to have Berrios back when he is ready. I think Mejia returns once Ervin Santana or Hector Santiago is traded (especially if one or the other continues to pitch well). But that is my opinion.

Berrios looks fine to me...84 pitches 64 for strikes. In Berrios two starts (14 ip) Berrios has walked 1 batter. Now the question is can Berrios take his success to the Bigs. It appears that there is nothing less in AAA for Berrios, now it is time for Berrios to have the same confidence in the Bigs he obviously has in AAA. Also, glad to see the strong start from Tyler Wells. I have often thought he would be one to watch this year after a good year in Elizabethton last year.

Article: Only One Call Away
FormerMinnasotan replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Well Berrios is definitely making it hard to keep him in AAA for much longer. In his second start today he went 8 innings (on 84 pitches) gave up 4 hits and 1 unearned run striking out 6 and walking none. Most impressively of the 84 pitches 64 were strikes. I think even if Mejia has a repeat performance of his season debut tomorrow Berrios might be coming back to Minnesota as he has looked much more in control this year than he did last year.- 34 replies

Good to see DelRosario continue pitching well as he did at the end of last year. I have to wonder, if DelRosario pitches as well this year like he did last year could he be considered a decent starting pitching prospect? It will be an interesting day tomorrow as both Jose Berrios and Fernando Romero will be pitching tomorrow.

Without the ability to strike anyone out and having control/command issues Stewart will not succeed. Just look at Jose Berrios last year. MLB hitters will make Stewart pitch to them and when he does he will get crushed. You cannot be successful long term if your plan is to be the next Aaron Cook or Nick Blackburn with poor command/control.

Why on earth is Lachlan Wells a relief pitcher all of a sudden. Right now, Wells is the only potential MLB starting pitching prospect in Ft Myers (unless you want to count Lewis Thorpe but he won't be pitching in Ft Myers until late May at the earliest). So that would mean if Wells moved to the bullpen that the only "potential" starting pitching prospects in the lower levels are either in EST or in A ball. For an organization that NEEDS starting pitching depth across the board that is pathetic IMO.

Article: 2017 Fort Myers Miracle Roster Preview
FormerMinnasotan replied to Seth Stohs's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Lachlan Wells will be one to follow for sure. As a 19 yr old he had a 1.77 ERA, and averaged over 8 k/9. And he is indeed 6'1" (he confirmed that in an interview in Milb.com) so the idea that he is too short now is not true, plus he has pretty good command of his pitches.- 20 replies

Honestly at least 4/5 starters in Chattanooga will probably be promoted to Rochester this year (Gonsalves, Stewart, Romero, Jorge) with at least 3 starters possibly looking at a possible September call up (Stewart, Gonsalves, Jorge).

I am interested in watching Eddie DelRosario and Tyler Wells also. DelRosario and Lachlan Wells were a big reason that Cedar Rapids made it to the post season last year so it will be interesting to see if DelRosario takes the next step in his development. Sounds like he has the "stuff", but is a little undersized. And well, Tyler Wells is 6'8" and might have a decent arsenal of MLB quality pitches (potentially), and well striking out 14 in 7 innings and giving up 1 hit does get people's attention.

Agreed. Case in point their "coaching" of Jose Berrios really stood out last year. How they couldn't bridge the gap from AAA to MLB with a pretty good pitching prospect is pretty bad if you ask me. I mean Quade and Cilborn were dumbfounded how Berrios could succeed in AAA and fail in the Bigs. Then it was reported that the Red Wings and Twins were coaching Berrios very differently and not focusing on the same issues. I am nervous Berrios won't pan out here only to rebound somewhere else, like St Louis.

I also wonder if we will see Berrios even when he is just "stretched out" by Molly's standards. I guess it will depend on how Mejia and Hughes look. IMO, I agree Duffey is in the bullpen because the Twins might need an arm available to replace Hughes in the rotation. And Mejia is only penciled in at the #5 spot as if Mejia doesn't perform Berrios should be stretched out enough by then to join the rotation.

Happy to see Mejia make it as the #5 as he earned it over ST. Hopefully his aggressiveness translates to regular season play as well.

My concern is Rochester will do nothing to help his development along. Look at his numbers there last year, obviously Berrios qualified more as a AAAA pitcher than a AAA pitcher. There were times when I would read that Berrios "straightened himself out" in Rochester only to fail once he got back to the Bigs. Why is that? One thing I suspect is when he did well last year it was only because he could continue pitching "comfortably" with using his "bad habits" and getting away with it because AAA hitters are not nearly as skilled as MLB hitters. So my question is how can Berrios develop in AAA when he has advantage of pitching to inferior hitters and possibly not being coached the way the Twins want him coached. Look if his stint in AAA works that's great, then that was a smart move. But if he looks as terrible as last year there needs an explanation as why he is failing. (Oh and personally I hope Berrios gets at least 20 starts this year, 25 would be better).

I am not concerned about Berrios pitching well in Rochester. He will be fine there. My concern is that while dominating in Rochester Berrios will be as MLB ready as he was last year. The Twins staff has certain details on what they want to see from Berrios and I doubt Berrios will do that in Rochester as that seemed to be the case last year. I feel Berrios needs more of the Twins staff coaching him rather than the Red Wings staff as I feel Berrios reverts to his "bad habits" in Rochester because he can get away with it. Plus hitters in AAA will not challenge Berrios enough to force him to get better. Just hope he proves me wrong and actually does well with the Big league club this year.

So, when will we see Berrios up in the Bigs? With Mejia and Duffey blocking Berrios' path to the Bigs I have a pessimistic feeling we won't see Berrios till at least mid June to mid July since there it doesn't look like the Twins will have a pitcher for Berrios to replace. Also, with Berrios being separated from the Twins pitching coaches I fear Berrios will fail much like last year as it seems what Berrios is being coached in Rochester is not what the Twins want to coach Berrios. Last year it seemed there was a huge disconnect between the Twins and Red Wings on Berrios' development. How is Molly, Neil Allen and co going to coach up Berrios if he may spend a month plus in Rochester? I just want Berrios to turn the corner, instead I see the same failure for Berrios and we will have to hope Duffey and Mejia can be better than advertised because I am becoming more doubtful that Berrios will hit his ceiling with the Twins. So stupid of Berrios to pitch in the WBC, it makes me think he doesn't care to be a top flight pitcher.

I'd rather see Mejia in the rotation and Duffey in the pen. Mejia seems to have more than an adequate fastball, a good slider, good change, and at least a decent curve from what I have heard. He is a lefty and from what I have heard he is very aggressive with in the strike zone. I'd just like to roll with him to start with since it looks like a forgone conclusion Berrios is going to start in AAA since he only got one start (and pitched one game) of the WBC.

While I know he hasn't thrown a pitch in 2 yrs, but don't count out Lewis Thorpe. He might not make the rotation till 2019, but at the time he was healthy he was seen as a better prospect than Romero, Stewart, and Gonsalves.

In my mind as of now the two front runners for the final rotation spot should be Berrios and Mejia. Vogelsong has pitched pretty putrid in spring training to the tune of a 7.94 ERA and since he doesn't have a set 40 man spot he shouldn't be in the running if he can't show the team something now (a 7.94 ERA shouldn't cut it). Berrios has looked somewhat better in his brief time in spring training and to be honest his rookie season looked an awful like Trevor May's rookie season, yet after May's rookie season he made the team as the #5 the following year out of camp so why not have some of the same patience with Berrios that they originally had with May? But as of now I would want to see Mejia get it as I feel he is most "deserving" of the spot based on his performance.

Good to see Thorpe back, and presumably healthy this year. It will be interesting to see a.how well he pitches and b.where he ends up playing. I do see similarities from Thorpe and Romero for the time out while battling injuries (and illness), but Romero was able to more often than not overwhelm A and A+ hitters just with his mid-upper 90's fastball (his secondary stuff came in in the latter part of the season). Thorpe has a good low-mid 90's fastball, but his strength is using his secondary stuff to compliment his fastball. And I would hope Thorpe goes through extended spring training and then goes directly to Ft. Myers. First off Romero until last year had 9 innings of A ball experience, Thorpe has 71.2 innings. Secondly, if Thorpe does well enough in Ft Myers perhaps the Twins can promote him to Chattanooga and let him finish his innings limit there, that way if the Twins add him to the 40 man next year he can start at a level (AA) closer to the Bigs and if he continues to be injury free and pitching as well as he has shown potential to do could make a push to pitch in the Bigs by 2019.

Article: MRI Reveals Torn UCL For Trevor May
FormerMinnasotan replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
Exactly, plus I believe May was even more wild his first season in the Bigs than Berrios was. Plus I think Berrios' k/9 rate was higher than May's. Honestly considering how much Berrios has worked to improve from last year I believe he could improve as much as May did from yr 1 to yr 2.
