A few things. You dont have to bold and underline everything. I do agree that it is because we havent offered equal contracts as other bidders. Getting top flight talent through free agency requires you to overbid. It is in the opinion that in the past 20 years, we havent offered equal money to top flight talent. That is correct. Aw what the hell, I will throw in italics. Morris probably signed with the Twins because he was at the end of his career and teams probably didnt think he had anything left in the tank. Sounds like a reoccuring theme doesnt it?
Why thank you for pointing that out. I guess I didnt realize that when I said "sign a free agent", we were actually including trades. Also, maybe we should wait and see him throw more than 133 innings before deeming him a #3.
Nobody around here had any expectation whatsoever of signing a true #1 or true #2. None. All anyone around here asked for was one of the pitchers in the #3 category.
Nowhere was I complaining about not signing Marcum - just stating how if we stand pat with what we have, how there is a better chance we relive another pitching nightmare all year then we have a chance of everything clicking for us and going well.
Just to play devil's advocate, let's pretend Pelfrey misses the first two months because he isn't ready to pitch yet. Harden blows his arm out in spring training. Worley's minor elbow stuff from last year results in TJ. Correia is Corria and has an ERA of 7.00 in June. Hendriks throws like he does last year (at the major league level). On top of that, Gibson is on his 120 IP limit (or whatever). Diamond continues his regression sophmore slump. On the flip side, everything could go smoothly and they are all servicable. But this is a not completely unrealistic scenerio that really worries me.
I think the main point that is resulting in calling for his head is the glaring need for at the very least average pitching, and having PLENTY of cash to sign a few servicable guys, and really not having much to show for it while still having the cash in hand (pocket).
It is very optimistic, but I also believe that anything less will result in my having the 'everybody saw that coming' attitude towards it. Sad that my optimism regarding the matter is a probably unattainable 4.75 ERA. sigh.
If he indeed was brought in to be a veteran innings eater, I might have higher expectations put on him - hoping for something like 200 innings of 4.75 ERA. I dont think he gets to 200 and I dont think he sniffs 4.75, especially with the defense he will have behind him.
King Felix winning the Cy Young with 13 wins. Whle he also had a 2.27 ERA, 249.2 IP, 8.4 K/9, a 1.057 WHIP, 2.5 BB/9, and 174 ERA+. I cant believe CC and his 21 wins didnt win the award and he actually placed 3rd that year. Outrage!
To kind of piggyback the idea of batting Parm in the #2 spot, Nick Johnson has the most AB in his career out of the #2 spot. Granted he is a career .399 OBP, but the point is puttng someone there that can get on base. Not play second base.
yeah, old adage also doesn't account for a manager that insists on following the play second bat second philosophy. Especially when we can't find a second baseman that can OBP over.. what...275?
It depresses me that Des Moines only carried Twins games for one year on 1700. Or maybe it was two. (not to mention only one Caravan has been down here in who knows how long). Regardless, I guess that's what two years of pure suckitude get your team as far as coverage out side of the state goes.
