  1. Also noticed that Gibbons has been pitching well. The Twins have a large number of intriguing and diverse (Australians, Dominicans, Venezuelans, Taiwanese, etc)pitchers in the rookie leagues. Stewart, Gonsalves, Jorge, and Thorpe have gotten more of the attention but guys like Gibbons, Lo, Romero, Hu and others have also pitched quite well. There seems to be a good deal of depth of young pitchers which is encouraging. Hopefully these guys can continue to develop and move up the system.
  2. I understand that the Twins have a reputation for being deliberate with promotions and all of that. I wasn't trying to say otherwise. When I said "claim," I was referring to the lack of any statements in the article or comments about promotions. I was simply trying to understand where mike wants wins comment was coming from. I was trying to figure out if he was referring to something or someone specific. i.e. Was he suggesting that Buxton wasn't being promoted to AA because he needed to work on base stealing? Or was he was just making a general comment about the Twins promotion philosophy? At any rate, it started a pretty nice discussion about the Twins minor league promotions and some potential small changes that may be occurring.
  3. Can you be more specific about what you are referring to? I just didn't see anyone making a claim that a player needed to be polished before moving on, so I am wondering where this comment is directed.
  4. Someone made a similar comment about Buxton's caught stealing in yesterday's minor league report, and for the second straight day Buxton was caught stealing in the game. (Maybe those need to be included in the report so as not to mislead anyone.) However, Buxton has improved his success rate by a couple percentage points while making the jump to FtM, which is nice to see since one would speculate that pitchers/catchers in general would be better at limiting the run game at a more advanced level. I think it's an area where Buxton is still learning, but he has shown the propensity to learn quickly. Additionally, when you have over 50 steals in a season other teams know you're likely to be on the move and will pay more attention to trying to prevent it. All of that to say, Buxton is a terrific prospect who's pretty good at this whole baseball thing, which we all probably know by now.
  5. He was actually caught stealing in this game (picked off to be more accurate). His stealing success rate has been better at FtM:74.4% to 78.3%. I believe he also successfully stole a base earlier this week in a game that ended up being suspended due to rain. It is not recorded on his milb stat page but I think he will get credit for that steal when that game is completed. Buxton has proven to be a pretty quick learner on top of his great athleticism and I think his base running will continue to improve as he learns more about the art of base stealing.
  6. Buxton singled in the first, then stole his 50th base of the year. It's like he's good at baseball or something.
  7. You may be right, but my question is whether any team would take him. Unless I'm mistaken, that team would have to keep a guy who's never played above A ball on their 25 man active roster for the entire season. That probably eliminates a lot of teams from taking him. And while the roster spot may not be an issue for a team like the Astros who have no notions of fielding a competitive team next year, it would be a terrible thing for Kepler's development. While teams would be interested in his talent, would they be willing to essentially waste a year of development by keeping him in the big leagues? I don't know all the ins and outs of the rule 5 and all of that, but maybe it is not a bad gamble for the Twins to expose him.
  8. E'town's regular season ends Aug. 30 and CR's regular season ends September 2 so they are about the same. The Kernels will be in the playoffs, while E'town is 2.5 games back of a playoff spot.
  9. I was thinking the same thing about Buxton. His season stat line across CR and FtM: .329/.412/.519 12 HR, 18 2B, 15 3B, and 49! SB Not too shabby
  10. Stewart starting today for GCL Twins
  11. I would lean more toward the may mean nothing, part. At least at this point, it is far too small of a sample to really mean anything. I do appreciate your updates and the in depth information about groundouts and what not. It is very informative so thank you. I looked at Stephen's game logs on baseball reference - which breaks down his ground balls, fly balls etc (this includes all balls put in play). Based on that info, Stephen's ground ball % would be 52.3% which would rank him in the top ten of major league pitchers, but of course he wouldn't qualify as again it is far too small of a sample. All of that is to say that at this point, Stephen has been a fantastic pitcher. He's missing bats and inducing groundballs. Hopefully, he'll continue to have success as he faces tougher competition.
  12. very nice appy league debut for gonsalves
  13. I'm purely speculating and not saying that I necessarily agree with it, but perhaps the Twins are keeping Walker in Cedar Rapids to help carry that offense in their playoffs. I would like to see Walker pushed up to the next challenge, but I do think they have some concern about keeping a strong team in Cedar Rapids. There aren't really strong options to replace Walker in Cedar Rapids which may be part of the reason for delaying his promotion. At this point, it may not be a big deal if Walker sees a few weeks at FtM or stays in Cedar Rapids, so they might as well keep the Kernels team as strong as possible for their playoffs. Hopefully he can start strong in FtM next year and spend the second half in AA.
  14. Just to add to this, Oscar Taveras and Gregory Polanco are a couple of other very highly touted prospects who did not receive huge signing bonuses. As long as the Twins use all of their allotted pool, I won't complain. Signing/ranking 16 year olds is much more of a crapshoot than even the draft. While it would be great to see them sign a few more of the highly ranked guys, I'm ok with using the money to sign a large quantity of guys. If they don't use their allotment, then I will be very frustrated.
  15. Kohl Stewart also back in action 2 IP - a walk and 2 strikeouts.
  16. The return of Alex Meyer! Got the start today for GCL - 1.2 IP 1 ER 3 Hits 1 BB 5 K's. He was replaced in the second with the bases loaded. Penilla walked in a run before getting the third out. Not the best line, but nice to see him back in action.
  17. Just wanted to make you aware that the link you provided is the same link provided by Jason, the original poster of this thread. He starts the thread every day with the link to the Twins affiliate scoreboard. It is certainly a helpful link.
  18. Just looked at Rosario's stats on milb - His OPS is actually much better against lefties at the AA level (FtM numbers not included). .841 vs lefties .758 vs righties
  19. Thanks for the link. Nice little write-up and interesting to see some national attention for Santana. It's unfortunate that Hulet didn't get to see Rosario's D at all and not enough to write-up Santana's. I would have really liked to read about Santana's defense at short as he's got a lot of errors, but that is not always that informative. Another highlight from the article that I saw was Rosario's nearly identical splits in OPS against righties and lefties. I hadn't ever looked at his splits. It is very encouraging to see him handling lefties well.
  20. Seth, do you think Thorpe will/should move up to E'town? He's pretty effectively dominated GCL hitters and seems like he's ready for another challenge.
  21. I was actually thinking about something similar earlier today. A few notable international signings who weren't huge bonus babies: Oscar Taveras: $145,000 Gregory Polanceo: $75,000 and a name Twins fans are familiar with Oswaldo Arcia: $80,000 I remember reading one of the major prospect analysts (I think it may have been Jason Parks) earlier this year saying something to the affect that he would rather spread the spending pool out over a lot of players rather than signing one or two of the top dollar guys. As much of a crap shoot as the draft can be, signing 16 year olds from other countries is even more so. Of course signing a whole bunch of the big figure guys and snickering at the pool rules is another route to go as well.
  22. Sano with a 2 run homer and rbi double in his first two at bats as the Rock Cats are pounding Akron early. Summers making the start for New Britain. Is there any issue with Baxendale or was this just a promotion for Summers?
  23. I'm thinking that you are referring to dominating at E'town? I'm not sure how much more dominant Thorpe can be in the GCL. Stewart has also pitched very well, although he's seen limited action due to the foot injury.
  24. Yes, I know. I think my comment was aimed more at the Twins decision makers (I realize they aren't paying any attention to me). I am not one who is super critical of the FO and I try to trust that they know more about what they are doing than I. However, sometimes it appears to me that they are more concerned with a player's age than his performance. Not saying it's necessarily true, just the way it appears at times. This could all be a moot point if word comes down that they've promoted Thorpe to E'town. I would just like to see him challenged, but hopefully the Twins are doing what is in the best interest of him as a player and person.
  25. I think Ervin Santana would be a solid target for the Twins. However, he is very unlikely to be signed by the Twins for two reasons. 1) He will likely be overpaid coming off a career year. 2) He would likely cost them a second round pick. It is possible, though, that reason 2 prevents reason 1 to some extent as teams seemed hesitant to give up draft picks this past off season (i.e. Lohse, Bourne).
