  1. To Summarize: 1)None of us are scouting experts, but we all have the right to our opinion about this pick. Some of us think it was a fine pick. Others wish the Twins would have gone with someone else and it should be fun to discuss those opinions. 2) We won't know for a couple years how these picks turn out, but we all hope they turn out to be great picks and contribute to a World Series Champion Twins team sometime in the not too distant future.
  2. For anyone interested, here is the link to the Box score for the DLS Twins game from 6/3. They lost 7 - 6. German Minier did not play and is not currently listed on the Roster. Gabriel Ynfante (2B), Jhonathan Alvarez © and Joel Ramirez (SS) each had 2 hits with a double. Jet Hernandez (DH) also added 2 singles. Elias Villasana started and had a nice pitching line - 4 IP 2 H 2 R (unearned) 3 K 0 BB They have 3 catchers on the roster who are all 17 years old. I'm not claiming to know anything about them, but Rainis Silva and Jhonathan Alvarez each had 2 hits in their first games. If I remember correctly (I don't have time to look it up right now) Silva was one of their more notable signs last year after Minier. It would be nice if these guys could develop into some promising catching prospects for the Twins.
  3. While I don't think A&M signing another QB 'evaporates' Stewarts leverage, I also don't think it 'changes nothing'. Stewart likely won't play QB this year as the Aggies have a fella by the name of Manziel, and the signing of another QB for the following year would affect Kohl's thinking in some way I would think or at least cause him to question A&M's commitment to him. He still has some leverage, but it would seem fairly foolish to turn down $4 mill. If the Twins draft him, I trust that they are very confident he will sign.
  4. I also appreciated the podcast. I also liked that it was short and concise. A few audio problems as others have noted but I'm sure that will get ironed out. I look forward to more short and interesting discussions. Conspiracy theory - yes seems very farfetched, but we're all at least a little crazy. Oldgoat - If the Twins do draft and sign Stewart, I hope you're right about him making the 3 player draft statements untrue.
  5. I think and hope you are right about a rule change, and one would think that serious injuries to Buster Posey and Carlos Santana over the last several years would push the issue a little harder. I also recognize the desire to score and that baseball plays happen at high speeds where decisions (or instincts) are made in split seconds. I think that is part of the reason why I think that coaching for those types of plays is so important. (Honestly, I don't know how much coaching is already done. Maybe organizations already put an emphasis on this.) Like you said there are dangers in sliding as well, but I guess my feelings have a lot to do with what I saw Goodrum try to do yesterday, then watching him laying motionless on the ground, then watching him being taken away in an ambulance. The throw beat Niko by several steps and he clearly went in with the intent to try to bowl over the catcher. The catcher reacted and Niko took a blow to the head and I can't help but feel like the whole thing could and should have been avoided. While some collisions (and unfortunately injuries) are probably unavoidable, this one clearly could have been avoided. Here's to hoping that baseball does something to help eliminate needless and dangerous collisions such as this one and that Niko gets well soon.
  6. I wasn't trying to be super critical of Jake. I know it's a tough decision whether to send someone, and I know from his reactions that he felt terrible about what happened to Niko. Sorry that my post sounded like I was trying to bring down Mauer. I think he's a great coach/manager for the minor league squad, I was just pointing out that he made a poor decision on this particular play. As you said, it happens. I was just surprised to see him send Niko on the play. As far as coaching players to avoid collisions, I disagree with your arguments. While collisions aren't against the rules, that doesn't mean you can't instruct players to avoid them. They really shouldn't change the mentality when they get to the bigs. They should still be trying to avoid collisions even at the major league level. One run is not worth risking serious injury. I understand that collisions may still happen, but players should be coached on how to best avoid those collisions until hopefully the rules are changed. I don't think any player should worry about getting a reputation as being 'soft' and any scout who would label a player as soft for that reason should be asked to run full speed into a brick wall a couple times. A guy can play the game hard without needlessly risking injury to try to score one run in one game. I mean absolutely no disrespect to you SD Buhr and I hope that my post did not come off as disrespectful. I appreciate your contributions and enjoy reading your posts.
  7. I was at the Kernels game yesterday. It was a scary time seeing Niko laying on the ground pretty much motionless while they were attending to him. Hopefully he has a speedy and full recovery. A couple of things about the play: 1) Jake had no business sending him home on the play. The left fielder already had the ball (in shallow left) as Niko was getting into third base. I like to see third base coaches be aggressive but that was a little much. The ball arrived well before Niko at the plate and he decided to try to dislodge the ball from the catcher's mitt. 2) Hopefully the team and the entire organization learns from this and instructs the players to avoid collisions at the plate, especially in the minor leagues. The outcomes of the games are not that important to risk one's health for one run. I understand that it is hard as a competitive athlete in the moment to refrain from doing anything you can, but it should be a point of emphasis for all the coaching staffs to all the players - don't try to run over the catcher.
  8. Was it just a day off for Buxton? I noticed he DH'd on Friday and sat out Saturday and am just curious if that signifies anything about his health. Planning to go to the game today and hoping I don't miss him, although I'm sure it'll be great either way.
  9. You are probably right about the explosion, but I think if they go with another position player, I would really want to see how they do in the draft as a whole. Originally, I was very much appalled by the idea of going underslot for McGuire. Although, I'm still not thrilled about it, if they were able to really grab some high upside (hopefully arms, maybe Manaea) with the next several picks, I might be able to keep from exploding.
  10. That seems crazy that the Twins would still take Stewart over Gray, but I think it also says a lot about how strongly Law feels about the Twins taking Stewart.
  11. Keith Law's latest mock and chat today suggesting that they would still pick Stewart even if Gray were available makes it seem like Kohl Stewart is almost certainly the Twins' guy. Geordy (NJ) Love the Mock today, what are the chances that Gray really does end up in Cleveland's lap? Klaw (1:10 PM) Cleveland gets one of the top five guys, if they want one; if the Twins are as locked in on Kohl Stewart as the industry believes, and they pass on whichever of the four college guys gets to them, then Cleveland gets someone they'd be very excited to land. I think their nightmare scenario is that Gray, Appel, Bryant, and Moran go 1-4, which can happen if Moran does go 1-1.
  12. It's unlikely that a guy his size with very little pop is going to be able to maintain a high OBP in the big leagues without hitting for a high average. Major League pitchers aren't going to give him free passes when there is little chance he's going to be able to do better than a single anyway. That's not to say that the Twins shouldn't consider giving him a shot, just that I don't expect much from him at the big league level.
  13. Well then he's perfectly suited for catching the Twins staff.
  14. May and Brummett have their work cut out for them as they're apparently scheduled to start both games this evening. Hope May improves his command so he can keep his pitch count down. PS - Thank you Jason for posting these links.
  15. This is my main point. The Rangers aren't likely to move any of their prospects (for aging players) until something is determined one way or the other regarding Stanton and Price. Despite there middle infield depth, right now I don't think the Rangers are a good trade partner for the Twins because of that. Fans should probably be looking elsewhere for those other teams interested in Willingham/Morneau... ...or maybe it could be more prudent for the Twins to hold on to them as suggested earlier in this thread. This could be a difficult decision the Twins have to make and is definitely an important one. It will be interesting to see how this season plays out. Hopefully fun to watch and fun to discuss!
  16. We are in agreement over Profar/Andrus. While Sardinas or Odor for Hammer/Morny might be a fair value, my point is that I don't think the Rangers will really trade any of their pieces when they likely have a guy like Stanton or Price in mind. Would you trade those A ball ceiling guys for post prime players, if you knew you might be able to use them for superstars in their prime? They might not need to be included in the deal, but the Rangers also won't want to leave their system bare if they do make a play for those elite guys.
  17. There's been a couple time that I've thought it would be great if the Twins could get one of the Rangers SS prospects. However, I think the Rangers have their sights set much higher than Morneau and Willingham. I highly doubt that they will move any of their top prospects while Stanton and Price are potentially on the trading block.
  18. Thanks Seth. Any thoughts or info on how the Miracle will handle Levi Michael's return? I can't see Double Doug taking playing time away from Pettersen after what he has done to start the season. Will they move AJ around throughout a given week (2B and Rosario to OF, 3B and Sano DH, while also getting a couple games at SS)? Also, I was wondering about DJ Baxendale. It seems to me that he would probably be moving onto this list somewhere if you were to redo it today. But I'm basically just scouting box scores and haven't read any reports on him. I believe that I've seen a couple times in different posts that thrylos is pretty high on him.
  19. I'm not exactly sure how to respond other than to say I agree with you. I did say that the relief pitchers would be drafted after their first couple picks. I guess my point was that if the conversion to starting doesn't work out, hopefully they would still have valuable bullpen pieces. With a young and cost controlled bullpen, hopefully that would also allow the Twins to spend more for starting pitching in free agency. I know that their free agent spending is a topic of much contention, however and probably best left for another thread. As far as the Twins first picks, I hope they are able to get a guy that will be able to fill a front of the rotation spot or at the very least a mid-rotation starter who will give them plenty of innings. While it would be pretty sweet to get Gray or Appel, I think I'd be fine with Stewart or Manaea. None of the bats excite me too much with the #4 pick, but I'll also admit that I'm not very educated beyond what Jeremy has provided.
  20. Whether or not the college relief pitchers are able to make the transition to starters isn't really a big concern to me. Of course it would be nice if even one of them could, but I think that having a system full of power relievers also has its benefits. Hopefully, it would allow the Twins to maintain a young cost controlled bullpen at the big league level which in turn would prevent them from overspending/trading for volatile bullpen guys. Of course, I could also see if having the opposite effect, where they are in contention but decide they don't want to trust the young guys down the stretch. But I'm going to pretend I didn't type that last sentence like I wish I could pretend they didn't trade Ramos for Crapps. Alas, I've digressed. Back to the draft discussion - I wouldn't mind seeing them continue to target power relief arms after their first couple picks.
  21. Thanks for the great write-up and solid info Jeremy. I was just starting to think that Manaea was becoming the more and more likely pick for the Twins, but your placement of Stewart ahead of him has me rethinking. Of course there's still quite a bit of time until the draft for things to change. I was wondering if you think (or have any inside info) that the Twins' drafting of a lot of college relief pitchers last year is a strategy that they will look to employ again this year, or if it was just something that fit that particular draft/talent. Was it a strategy that they employed and they were targeting those players, or was it just kind of how the draft played out?
  22. Jason Parks of Baseball Prospectus saw Micker Zapata at a showcase in January. The link to his notes on the event is here. Says he was the best player at the showcase with 7+ power.
  23. I wouldn't think that the Twins would have too much trouble finding a new AAA affiliate. While their recent history has been poor, I would think a potential affiliate would be excited about the number of quality prospects (and some very noteworthy prospects) the Twins have in the lower levels that should be spending some time in AAA in the not too distant future.
  24. Willingham in LF, Arcia in CF, and Parm in RF sounds like a really slow outfield. Given the Twins' low K pitching staff, I'm not sure I'd want to see that (but I guess I don't really get to watch many games anyway). On the other hand, maybe it's in the better interest of the Twins to just say, 'The heck with pitching and defense, let's see if we can out-slug some teams 65 times this year.'
  25. I don't think Sano's status as a prospect is really tied to his position much. It seems that most rankers I've seen already thought that he was unlikely to stick at third and still ranked him highly so I don't think a position shift would cause a fall in the rankings. His ranking is about his bat. It would be great for the Twins if he could stick at 3rd. But, if his bat gets anywhere close to its ceiling, I don't think it'll matter too much which position he plays.
