  1. Can someone be a little emasculated?
  2. If Gibson pitched for the Tigers he'd be their ace. Unless he would have been traded away.
  3. He spent some time in the air on that one.
  4. I hope you're right. I know the postseason rosters are based on the 25-man as of Sept. 1. However, any player on the DL on that date can be activated and any player who was on the roster on that date can be replaced by a player who was on the DL. And any player on the 25-man on that date can be placed on the DL and any other player can be substituted. Since Sano was on the DL at that time I didn't know if activating him now would negate that bit of flexibility.
  5. Dick talking about Romine playing 9 different positions in 9 innings. The thing is, the Tigers would have to be ahead or tied going into the bottom of the 9th for that to happen. So then, the question is, which position would he play in which inning? Save playing pitcher for the bottom of the 9th? Now THAT would be interesting. Of course, I suppose he'd only need to throw one pitch.
  6. Well, he's in mid-season form, at least.

  8. Oh, geez. Guess that means I have to drink two today.
  9. I have not seen the following issue addressed here or in the Strib's coverage of the Twins: If it turns out he is physically not ready and the Twins choose not to place him on the postseason roster does that mean he has to be placed on the 10-day DL? And if so, does that mean he would be ineligible to play in any games until Oct.13?
  10. Y'know, Brandon Kintzler isn't exactly Aroldis Chapman. He's probably not even Eddie Guardado. He's a journeyman who made the Twins' roster only because we had huge bullpen problems. Perkins goes down with a career-threatening shoulder injury. Jepsen, who filled in well for Perkins as closer the season before, can't get anyone out. Kintzler was chosen as closer because he was the least-poorly-suited for the job in the bullpen of a 103-loss team. When the Nationals came asking for him the trade was made because Falvine decided having Watson and $500,000 of pool money was better for the organization than having a 33-year-old relief pitcher who is unlikely to improve in the future, and whose removal from the roster would have a negligible effect on the odds of winning a world championship this season. I think it was completely reasonable to make that trade.
  11. Three more games of fall training then on to the postseason!
  12. We'll find out in 6-8 years. Dude is only 20 years old.
  13. I wasn't clear that I was considering which free agents or trade targets may be available during both of the next two offseasons.
  14. Worse off, yes, but by how much? In terms of how much closer they would be to a world championship the difference is so slight as to be nearly negligible.
  15. I think we will have to agree to disagree. While they will still need to acquire pitching they will (IMHO) be in a better position to acquire good pitching during the next 6 to 18 months than they were during July and August this year. We did miss the benefits of such acquisitions in 2017 but it's highly unlikely (IMHO) that the benefits would have gotten us a world championship this year. I give you the examples of Oakland and Toronto during the last couple seasons. Both of them went all in and have zero world championships to show for it. Moreover, they are far further (IMHO) from that goal now than they would have been had they not made the big trades they made. Verlander was (IMHO) not a good fit for the Twins. They are more than one pitcher away from serious contention for a world championship. The Astros, on the other hand, are close enough that one pitcher is much more likely to make that difference. Moreover, Verlander is 34 years old and appears to be declining. Beyond that, his salary stands at $28M each of the next two seasons and $22M the season after that. Clearly (IMHO) poor bang for the buck. I think the Twins would do much better spending money on pitchers approaching their primes instead of spending it on pitchers past their primes.
  16. I say no. Would having Kintzler on this team be enough to make a difference in whether we win the WS this season? I think not. Would we have re-signed Kintzler? I doubt it. Now, I'm not saying I expect Watson to become the next Corey Kluber but it's likely he will contribute more to the Twins in the course of his time with the organization than Kintzler would have contributed here in 2 months. In retrospect it is obvious to me that Falvine's decision not to become significant buyers before the deadline was the correct one. Now, no-one knew that Cleveland would run up a win streak of historic proportions but as it turned out going all-in for the short term at the deadline would have, AT BEST, changed the venue of the WC game. And it would have put a serious dent in the medium term and long term.
  17. These two posts illustrate what make me the most optimistic about the BeeGees. While the short term should always be kept in mind it appears that the long term is their priority. This is as it should be. It's only now, after a year of evaluation of the organization, that they are in a position to really start to put their vision into reality. Not only does it take time for a draftee to develop into a major league player, it takes time to put a system in place and hire the people necessary to make it work. We are seeing this in the recent terminations of a number of scouts and other minor league personnel. I think their goal is to create an organization that supports a major league team that contends for the postseason every year. Scouting and player development are the keys to achieving this goal, not just in terms of drafting but in terms of trading and free agent signings. And speaking of free agents, I strongly concur with td1947. The BeeGees were not in a position to sign big name players to big dollar contracts last off season. Not only were they brand new to the organization but very few top flight players would have been interested in coming here at that time. Now everyone in baseball knows that our batting order is replete with talented young players trending upward. The Twins' dugout and bullpen will be a much better place to watch them bat compared to the pitcher's mound.
  18. Interesting. I wasn't aware of this change. In the one-wild-card format there was no playoff game because both teams were in the postseason anyway. But in the two-wild-card format there is an advantage in the postseason schedule for the division winners so they play off to determine who gets which berth.
  19. They were about a half block from each other.
  20. Post of the night. One of the most successful anti-jinxes we've had all year.
  21. This is not as far-fetched as some might think. I'm thinking there are a lot of free agent pitchers who'd rather watch the Twins' rising stars bat from the Twins' bullpen or dugout than from the pitcher's mound
