  1. I'm not disputing that professional athletes make a lot of money. But why do so few people complain about how much money is earned by rock musicians and movie stars? It's really no different. Athletes are entertainers just like musicians and actors are, and they are entitled to whatever someone is willing to pay them.
  2. Central America? Absolutely no way. The only place in Latin America that has any chance whatsoever would be Mexico City, and I think the currency exchange and livability issues would make it difficult to make things work. I know I wouldn't want to play 81 games there.
  3. I think expansion will happen someday, but probably (hopefully) not for at least another 20 years. As several have mentioned, the Rays and A's are barely hanging on. Before expanding, first identify the 30 best markets in North America and put the existing 30 teams in those markets. Expansion should happen only if two conditions are met: One, there are 32 markets capable of satisfactorily supporting a major league team, and, two, there is a talent pool (especially pitching) capable of satisfactorily populating 32 major league rosters. It's kind of fun to think about what expansion might look like if and when that happens but it's essentially pointless until that time. I will say this, however. Instead of creating divisions and then deciding how the postseason would be set up, it should be looked at from the other direction. Decide how the postseason should be set up and then create divisions to facilitate that.
  4. But the revenue has to be split 32 ways instead of 30.
  5. It's not just fielding. FA pitchers will want to go to teams that excel at everything but pitching. They get lots of playing time because they are needed and they get lots of support. Locking up a roster with good hitters, good fielders, and good baserunners means that pitchers will want to come here, which means they'll be more likely to sign at a lower salary level here than elsewhere.
  6. I've said this before--the three mentioned in the OP plus Berrios, Kepler and Polanco. All are candidates for long term deals at some point in the next 2-3 years. I'd love it if they were all locked in, but it's easy for me to say what Mr. Pohlad should do with his money. As expensive as Mauer was, the organization would have been worse off not paying him the money. And I think the team got very good value from Dozier's mid-length deal. Same with Ervin. But there's always risk as we found out with Phil Hughes, and that's why it's a gamble. These six players all show signs of being valuable players, and for that reason it's probably in the best long-term interest of the team to pay long-term money. And don't forget that teams usually insure contracts to give the team relief in case of player injury.
  7. This post captures the essence of the situation. Falvey still has a lot of work ahead of him to build the Minnesota Twins. I say build instead of rebuild because he is really starting from scratch on the project of assembling an organization from top to bottom in his vision. He knows what he wants to do but he can't neglect what's in place in the meantime. I think he decided that Molitor will be satisfactory in handling the current major league team but as his vision becomes reality and he identifies someone who will better fit what he wants in a manager he'll thank Molitor for his service and make a change.
  8. I hadn't really thought of this, but how much of an increase following how much of a decrease is required for a comeback award? And if there's that much of an increase then shouldn't a player be both a comeback and a most improved?
  9. The trades they made at the deadline had no effect at all on whether this team would win the WS this year. I think they made the trades because they felt they were coming out ahead by making them. Just my opinion.
  10. Haven't had a chance to read the thread yet, but I just wanted to say that if his contract is not renewed I predict that he handles it with grace, as opposed to how the High-A manager handled it when that happened to him.
  11. The Yankee Stadium gun is way juiced, but the point remains that we are short on power pitching.
  12. Well, we were only 8 ½ innings away from a victory.
  13. Unfortunately more than that with that swing.
  14. 10 kinds of people - those who understand binary and those who do not.
  15. Your anti-jinxes worked last Tuesday against Cleveland. Keep them coming, and then leave the thread in the 7th inning like you did before.
  16. First base was open. Batter could have run. He gets a talking-to if I'm managing.
  17. Jose throw about 4 more of those foul-off-the-ankle pitches.
  18. Erv could go on 2 days rest on Friday with the short start tonight.
  19. Ladies and Gentlemen the evil empire no longer leads!
  20. What's the record for game thread posts? Second inning and we're at 510.
  21. OK boys, don't let up with the bats now. Hammer down!
  22. Non nam hucking hon of a non nam hucking mitch.
