  1. I was at the game tonight. I was so happy to see a victory over the Whities and the end of a personal 8-game losing streak in Target Field visits, that I can't bring myself to get too worked up over Butera, the 883 blown chances to blow the doors off (OK, I'm exaggerating, but it seemed like that many as I was watching) or any of the other negatives raised, valid though they are. And it was fun to see Good Frankie. I hope he keeps showing up.
  2. 1) Ha! I often DVR games I can't catch live but rarely go back to them and settle for highlights instead. But I was actually thinking to myself as I read through the thread "Man, it might actually be worth going back and watching this one." 2) I'd love for that prediction to come through. I keep thinking, or at least hoping, that Morneau will bust out and go on a tear. Tomorrow is about as good a time to start that as we're going to get. I'm interested to see how they come out in the series as well. There are a number of troubling aspects to the season thus far, the 13-22 home record is a big one. Gotta find a way to start winning on our own turf, especially against division foes.
  3. Awesome game thread, I appreciate the descriptions and insights. I couldn't tune in today, sounds like I missed a beauty of the game with a lot of interesting stuff that you don't really get from recaps, highlights and box scores. Maybe I should skip more often, I seem to have a habit of missing the good ones. And I've got tickets for tomorrow night's game, which doesn't bode well either - the Twins have lost the last 8 games that I've attended - heartbreakers, blowouts and everything in between. No better way to see that streak broken than against the Whities, but I have this horrible feeling that it's going to be Good Peavy vs. Bad Frankie.
  4. ---Well said, glunn, and I salute you for calling us out previously over this. We can disagree, even passionately so, but should do so without attacking each other's character, intelligence and motives. I've let emotion get the best of me a couple of times in the past and crossed that line myself; I apologize for that and resolve not to escalate baseball disagreements into urinating contests. I love this forum, and would hate to see it devolve into the equivalent of the Strib comments section.
  5. ---I'm with you. Hopefully it will be something towards the lower end of that range as the upper end (3 yr/$15 mil) is getting a bit steep for me.
  6. ---Well, so much for that previous agreement to debate respectfully with each other and only hurl snotty barbs at White Sox fans.
  7. ---I said that Hardy was a nice player (not sure where you got "essentially no good" from), but he is overrated by Twins fans who like to dwell on the decision to trade him. Doumit was not a good example to cite as he's not a shortstop, that's a fair point. Did trading Hardy and signing Nishioka prove to be dumb moves? Absolutely. But like Cdog said, you don't need falsely make the guy sound like a first ballot Hall of Famer to make that point. As far as "taking him back in a heartbeat" - yeah, sure, at no cost, but he's in the first-year of a 3-year/$22 mil deal. And outside of a 3-week period in May, he's been pretty ineffective at the plate this year. Dozier has put up better numbers at the plate than Hardy over the last month. Here's the other thing: suppose we had kept Hardy, he had a great year last year here, we gave him the same extension Baltimore did, and he put up the same 2012 numbers here; I highly doubt that you'd see the same fawning praise of Hardy.
  8. JJ Hardy is a nice player but I think the gushing over him is a bit excessive. You'd think we were talking about the second coming of Ernie Banks here. He had the power surge last year, but his numbers so far this year are pretty similar to Doumit's. And for good reason, I don't see a whole lot of gushing over Doumit. The Nishioka issue aside, I'd rather be developing Dozier than overpaying Hardy. .
  9. It's easy to Monday morning quarterback this move, but I'm good with the gamble. Yeah, we lost this one, but I'd rather see a team that takes risks in an effort to improve than one that either stands pat in hopes that what it has is good enough (or makes a bunch of Tony Bautista-type low-risk, low-reward signings.) Better to swing for the fences with the game on the line than get caught looking with the bat on your shoulder.
  10. I agree with the idea that there is reason for optimism because the team has some good things going, and a couple of good moves could have them competing for the division again. However, I also agree with those who have expressed skepticism over the current management group's ability to identify those moves. It sure seems as though a staleness has set over this organization, and I too would like to see some new blood from outside the organization. I'm not in the "everyone member of the front office and the coaching staff is an idiot" camp. In fact, I think TR and Gardy are good baseball guys, and I appreciate everything they did to help raise the Twins up from the ashes of the late 90's in the face of threatened contraction. Nor am I one who is quick to fire the coach or GM, which happens too often in pro sports not because it's the best move you can make, but the simplest. But having the same people do the same jobs for too long is usually not a good idea, and sometimes you need to make change for change's sake.
  11. Yeah, hard not to wonder what might have been in 09 or 10 with a healthy Morneau in the lineup. Winning in October is hard enough with a fully healthy line. Doing it without your top run producer makes it that much tougher. But injuries are part of the game. I am sure that many Cardinals fans wonder how the 87 series might have turned out differently with a healthy Jack Clark in their lineup.
  12. ---I was at that game. At the time of the shot, I was in the men's room with my son - then a toilet training toddler, who, thankfully, was making good progress in that area. All of a sudden we heard the roar of the crowd. But it wasn't the typical home run roar that builds into a big "Yaaaaay!". It was more like a sudden "Whooooa!", as though 50,000 Spicoli's simulatenously tried Double Stuff Oreos for the first time. He was so pleased with his successful use of a urinal, I didn't have the heart to tell him he missed out on something he'll probably never see again.
  13. "In light of these parallels, fans are now wondering whether the team's current improvement is legitimate or another painful mirage. Fortunately, there are plenty of indications that a similarly dramatic drop-off is not on the horizon." ---Yep, that's the question. No reason to think this is the start of the unstoppable second-half freight train a la the 2006 team. But I expect better than the second-half train wreck of 2011. Hopefully we'll see some consistently competent baseball with youngster like Dozier, Diamond and Plouffe showing progress and Mauer and Morneau showing signs of returning to their former greatness.
  14. ---2011 may have felt like it lasted twice as long as most others, but I'm pretty sure it was still only 1 season.
  15. I don't hate him, I just don't think much of him. I agree with those who have called him lazy and pointed out his unjustified arrogance. He's awfully dismissive of the average fan, but he doesn't seem to have much more knowledge or insight than the average fan. Once in a while he'll write a piece I think is good, or at least mildly entertaining. But most of them long on snideness and short on analysis. And as far as the journalist/columnist thing, I have a problem with the way he handles that. A columnist is someone who offers analysis and commentary on facts reported by other people. But when you are citing facts not reported anywhere else without a source (e.g. the eye-rolling at Mauer), I'm sorry, but you are reporting. I cannot stand how he makes claims about events that nobody else has reported on, then when pressed about the his evidence for those events, hides behind the "I'm not a reporter, I'm a columnist" thing. It's bush league.
  16. Bremer said that he sent Plouffe, though I didn't actaully see the replay. Yeah, that bunt by Dozier was really dumb. Thankfully, he does seem smarter than that, so I'm hopeful we won't see that mistake repeated.
  17. ---Yeah he doesn't seem to have the greatest feel for when to send guys, does he? He's held up a bunch of runners I thought should have been sent this year, why he decided that was the time to be aggressive I don't know.
  18. ---Yeah, if we'd managed just a bad 14-22 start instead of a horrific 10-26 start, there would probably be a bit of a different feeling about this season.
  19. ---I agree with you on the rebuild. (Though as a guy who follows the T-Wolves in the winter, I kinda bristle at the word. It can be a slippery slope.) We should absolutely be sellers at the deadline, and making moves for next year and beyond. But even if we hold a fire sale and move Capps, Span, Carroll, etc., who knows what the remaining guys might be able to do in this division. Just because the front office has turned its attention to the future doesn't mean the coaches and players should. It's highly unlikely the Twins will win it, but it would be nice to at least see them make it a bit interesting. If nothing else, it would be good experience for Dozier, Diamond and some of the other young guys to play some semi-meaningful second-half games. Like you said, it's a crazy division. I wouldn't be surprised to see the eventual AL Central winner have even less than 87 wins. The Whities are facing a much tougher second-half schedule, Cleveland is thoroughly mediocre, Detroit hasn't shown any signs of figuring it out, and the Royals are, well, the Royals - they're the team of the future and they always will be. So while I'm all for building for the future, I'm not ready to concede this year yet. (Some may call it naive optimism, but it's really just old-fashioned Irish stubborness.)
  20. He's been impressive, and if he's able to maintain those numbers over his next few starts, he'd merit some consideration. However I think he got a bit too late of a start, and it will probably be the Hammer. But it's a good question. If he's strong for the rest of the season, he should get some love for Rookie of the Year.
  21. ---Yeah, my head says that the best thing about this run is that it helps build trade value of guys we should be looking to sell off at the deadline, but there's always that small part of me that roots for the team with my heart and stubbornly refuses to give up until the team is mathematically eliminated. I remember going to games with my Dad as a kid, and being down by like 12 runs in the 8th inning, and he'd ask if I wanted to go. And I would defiantly insist on staying because, dammit, it's ain't over 'til it's over. Guess I wasn't able to completely mature out of that.
  22. Yeah, it does feel good to win. It's too bad we dug ourselves such a deep hole so early. So far, it's a similar script to last year. Bad start, followed by a June surge against weak teams. It'll be interesting to see what happens next as the season wears on and the competition gets tougher. I'm not expecting the unstoppable freight train that we saw from June on in 2006, but I'm hopeful that it will be better than the second-half train wreck of 2011.
  23. It was really nice to see us finally bust open a game like that. Another series win - let's see a sweep.
  24. I agree, still too early to say what Plouffe is or could be. However, I recall some expressing anger when Luke Hughes was let go because we should have kept him over Plouffe. I think Plouffe's surge and the struggles of Hughes, which recently landed him another demotion down to AA, validate that the correct decision was made there.
  25. I like that lineup too. Good chance to keep feasting on bad teams and continue to climb.
