  1. TR was on talkin' Twins last night. After listening the three things I cam away from the discussion. I"m para-phrasing here, so give me a little latitude. 1) Essentially all of the free agent money will be devoted to Pitching. 2) Signing prior to the winter meetings tend to be overpriced. 3) He is expecting to sign enough quality starting pitching so that the team can compete in 2013 The Jury is obviously still out, but I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt until we start to see him actually make some moves. He either knows what he is doing and will put together a quality pitching staff or the game has passed him by and it is time for a change. Either way we should know on April 1st.
  2. Money doesn't buy championships. Just look how many the Yankees have won lately. I agree, you can only play one player at each position. I usually argue on the side of the importance of the team chemistry, the coaches, etc. However, this is just one revenue stream for them. This will ultimately have to be dealt with. The current system is not set up to handle payroll extremes that the current environment can create. Hopefully they can deal with this issue without causing another work stoppage. I would hate to see us miss another season of baseball.
  3. Agreed. He has already faced pitching at that level if not above during the last 6 weeks. Let him start out the season at new Britain and if he keeps posting a better than .400 on base percentage move him up again quickly. If we are overly committed to Hicks, Arcia and Benson, at the very least he should generate some trade interest. Personally, I would love to see him make the majors as a Twin. Trade the high profile guys that seem to have all of the potential and keep the guys that produce.
  4. No to Figgins, No to Valencia. Enough with players that aren't good enough to make other teams 40 man roster. Minor league deal? Perhaps, but lets go get some players that can actually make this team better. I would make a bad GM, I would eventually get impatient and just say sign him, I don't care about the cost. I'm convinced that is worth it to spend a little more and get quality.
  5. Any thought that by filling up the entire 40 man roster that it signals that we have a multi-player trade brewing? If we are shipping out 2 or 3 guys on our 40 man roster for one very good pitcher, that would leave us at 37 or 38? Am I being too optimistic?
  6. I think Gardy wants to win next year. In fact if they don't finish above .500 I think he and Rick Anderson are gone. I think Terry Ryan wants to win (yes, a world series), but I think he takes the attitude that he doesn't want to give away our future (prospects such as Sano, Hicks, Buxton) to win now. He will try and balance wins this year with a future that still looks bright. I think you are right about the Pohlad's however. I think they want to win, but only if they can make money doing it. I don't think they are interested in losing money to buy a championship. I'm sure TR has some flexibility with his payroll, as long as he doesn't lose money. With the reduction in ticket sales in 2013, it will be interesting to see how aggressively TR will be with free agents. I don't agree with the premise that there is a fallback plan. They will add 2 if not 3 pitchers, personally I'm hoping for 4.
  7. I won't ever get a job guessing someones weight at the fair. It is pretty tough just looking at photos, guessing how big someone really is, even if you see them in person it isn't easy. Someone was at the fall instructional league in late Sept and early Oct and posted photos of just about everyone there. Here are some links to those photos, you be the judge. Very good photos by the way, professionally done. Miquel Sano, baseball reference has him at 6-3, 195 Kennys Vargas, baseball reference has him at 6-5, 215 Max Kepler, baseball reference has him at 6-4, 180 Byron Buxton, baseball reference lists him at 6-1, 188 All of these photos were taken within a few days. The only definitive thing I learned, is that we have some big boys coming up and that baseball reference is just taking the information from the rosters posted by the Minor league affiliates.
  8. The wiki entry lists Max as being 6-4 and 220, is he really that big? Baseball ref and other still have him at 180 pounds. He is in the growing years anyone seen him lately that can give us a first hand observation? In all of the photos I have have seen, he doesn't look over 200 pounds even at 6-4. Curious if he will stay lean and athletic or turn into another Sano, Vargas type power hitter?
  9. There was a lot of discussion when he walked away from his contract with the Twins. He left a bunch of money on the table, choosing to effectively turn down $3.25 million guaranteed to play out the remaining year of his contract at Rochester. It was announced that he has a two-year deal with the Hanshin Tigers, for about $7.4MM, meaning he'll earn more money than he forfeited with the Twins. He had a rough couple of years in the US, I hope things start to work out well for him back in Japan.
  10. Guys like Roberts fascinate me. As you mentioned Seth, he doesn't have the tools that stand out, yet he has succeeded at every level he has played. He is not big, he is not fast, he doesn't have the beautiful swing but he gets the bat on the ball consistently and manages to get on base. I guess I compare it to the guys hat the NFL scouting combine. Would you rather take the guy that is fast, agile and strong or the guy that actually shows up tackles the ball carrier. Roberts only got 283 AB's in 2011 and 352 AB's in 2012. Obviously he was not in the lineup everyday. Was he platooned? Did he miss some games because of injury? I know you have to get some playing time for everyone on the team, but I'm surprised he wasn't in the lineup more often.
  11. Reds number one prospect injured crashing into the outfield wall. Tough break. Infielder, converting to the outfield. Walked off with assistance of the trainers.
  12. This is my first time watching him Seth. He is tearing up the AFL against the top prospects from every team, yet he isn't even in our top 20. He doesn't have the raw tools that everyone looks for, but he has had success at every level. Not a fair comparison, but is he an outfield version of pedroia? He doesn't look the 6'-1" he is listed as.
  13. Now that he has won the NL Cy Young award has his price gone up? Has his PR value to the Twins gone up? Would acquiring him now add some legitimacy to the 2013 pitching staff? Do they retain some season ticket holders with the addition of a Cy Young award winner? I think the knock on Dickey when he was here, was that it was tough and still is tough for a knuckleballer to pitch out of the bullpen. A few thoughts. 1) Dickey is not your typical knuckballer, he throws it harder than most and has some other pretty good pitches to keep batters honest. I agree that soft-tossers tend to age better than most pitchers, but since he throws his harder will he then age at what can be viewed as a more normal rate? 2) I remember an interview back when he pitched with us, he mentioned that he had less movement when he pitched indoors. Now that we play at target field and will play very few of our games in a dome he would be a better fit with our organization. 3) I would only trade for him unless he would agree to a contract extension through at least 2015. Right now it sounds like he is starting his demands at $10 per year and going up from there. What other elite pitcher is going to come here on terms even close to that? 4) I usually place importance on the difference between the AL and NL pitching statistics, do think these differences would apply with Dickey? 5) Any chance we could use him to teach the pitch to some of our other pitchers in our organization?
  14. Exactly. Use Span, Morny and the Hammer to bring in pitching. Sign FA position players if we feel the need to fill a hole.
  15. What do we need another toolsie outfielder for? We need pitching. Oh wait, time machine, this is 2009. What do we need another toolsie outfielder for? We need pitching. Yes, I do believe that he could have progressed through the Twins farm system just as quickly. When someone dominates at a level they will move, regardless of the organization. I don't think it will be fair to compare Buxton to Trout. He will get promoted when he is ready. He should not get promoted through levels just in an attempt to match the success of Trout.
  16. The little bit longer answer is probably, I don't think we have to worry about losing either of these two.
  17. I'm not sure it is the most intelligent thing to do, but if you take Jocketty at his word. A lead off hitter is his number one priority. Followed by a statement that the two main FA choices are in his own words "too expensive for his club". I would think that puts Span on the top of his list. I wonder if Jocketty has offered TR one of his SS and TR is holding out for pitching? I"m sure from the Reds perspective, they are close, they just need to fill some holes. They need to fill that lead off spot without taking anything away from what they have already built. SS is an area of excess for them. Pitching seems to be the one area where everyone claims you can't have enough. I wonder if they have got to the point where we have offers out to the Rays, Braves and Reds and we are just waiting to see who is willing to move first?
  18. From MLB trade rumors on Thursday The Reds' first priority is trying to find a leadoff hitter, though Jocketty said that Michael Bourn is too expensive for his club and the same could be true about Angel Pagan. Later he goes on to say Jocketty said last week that the Reds could deal one of their shortstops (Zack Cozart and Didi Gregorius) if the right deal came along, but Jocketty said that neither player is being shopped. "We’re not taking offers,” Jocketty said. “That gets out and then we have to call Cozart and call Didi.” I still think we are a good trade partner, even if I would prefer we go after pitching
  19. I think the addition of Hunter makes the Tigers much better. He will add a lot to the team attitude, something I think the Twins lost when he left. Although on the downside of his career, he still has above average skills in both the field and at the plate. Even with the addition of four quality starters by the twins, I would still give the Tigers the edge over us heading into the season. I can only speak for myself, but by saying we have to shoot for 2014 and 2015, I am saying that we have to sign pitchers that are perhaps younger and will peak in two to three years as apposed to someone that is an established major league pitcher who is on the downside of their career. I don't see value in signing a Pavano type FA that will eat innings this year, but will age and his skills will deteriorate to the point that he will be even less effective when we will really need good pitching in 2014 and 2015.
  20. Sounds as if Torii made the decision, before any calls or offers were made. Here is the link. http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/blog/scott-miller/20980798/the-tale-of-torii-the-tiger Hunter phoned general manager Dave Dombrowski and invited himself to town. So the Hunters arrive in Detroit on Tuesday, word leaks, and now Larry Reynolds' cell phone starts blowing up with texts. Reynolds is Hunter's agent. And, suddenly, he now has several clubs jockeying for position via text, wanting to make sure they get a chance to talk with Hunter before any decision is made. What they don't know, and what Reynolds -- who also is in Detroit -- now must tell them is, forget it.
  21. Torii is a great upgrade. V-mart will get most of his at bats as a DH. That leaves no room for Delmon. Tori will get his AB's in the outfield. I would think they could play him in both left and right. In either spot he will probably be a better defensive player than we will put out there with Parmelee and Willingham. I wonder if the Hammer and Morny will have more trade value at the deadline next year or right now? I think we can pencil in the Tigers for a few years at the top of the central. We need to start trading for pitching with an eye on 2014 and beyond.
  22. Great move by the Tigers. Improvement in defense, potent lineup and probably more importantly I think he will be a great veteran influence in the clubhouse.
  23. My thoughts exactly. That is a lot of money for a guy that won't be ready to pitch in April. If we need three starters better than Baker, will any of them sign at a price less than $10 per year? Granted, I'm sure Baker received a little more because it was a one year deal as apposed to a multi-year offer, but this could really be a bad sign for the costs of SP going forward. Perhaps Boras was correct, the new TV money will in fact be spent.
  24. I'll be interested to see how much guaranteed money the got. I always liked Baker, but don't see him contributing until the second half of the season. I wonder how many real offers he received? If you are looking for a chance to prove yourself on a one year deal, I don't think I would pick the Cubs.
  25. I agree with Nick, Rick and Gardy are looked as a team. If one goes, they both go. I think they would like to get Baker back for another year, just to see how he recovers, but I don't think it is a major part of the 2013 pitching strategy.
