  1. The question with Stewart centers around the value he still has and the perception that it's dropping. There's good reason for it (K rate), though to be fair, Stewart really upped that in his second stint at High A this season only to see it drop again in AA. He's very young for his league, so writing him off as a bust would be a bit silly. He has been pushed very aggressively by the Twins. If I have a package bringing back Alvarez, De Leon or Urias, and someone else highly though of like Bellinger, I'd consider it. If that was what it took to upgrade De Leon to Urias in a lesser deal (say Alvarez, Urias, and Calhoun) I'd again put a lot of thought into it. As for Puig, I'll echo what John said. Not a target, but most definitely a guy I'm willing to take if LA is desperate to get rid of him.
  2. yeah, I already looked it up. I'm in Crystal City, not too far from there... well, excluding traffic that is.
  3. Um, no. You set the bar high. They should be asking for Urias. Probably Urias and De Leon for now. That's how negotiations work. I wouldn't expect to get Urias, but they have to ask.
  4. If that deal was on the table, I'm pretty sure Falvey would have accepted it already... I sure would have
  5. Most likely yes. Where it gets interesting is if Dozier has lots of interest and the Dodgers really want him. That's where they can throw a guy like that out and make it hard for Falvey/Levine to look elsewhere. That said, the Twins should most definitely be asking for Urias right now.
  6. yeah, the WS have a weak farm system. They should be asking for at least 2 top 100s and 2 or 3 more young upside picks as well. Sale has 3 years left and is a top of the rotation pitcher. He won't come cheap.
  7. De Leon, Alvarez, and Puig... I'd be happy with that. 2 major leaguers with high upside and an ace upside pitching prospect. I'm liking the fact that LA is being noted as being aggressive... now hopefully one or two others gets aggressive and thus forces them to up the price, by say swapping Urias for De Leon or throwing in another prospect and taking Santiago off our hands. One can dream...
  8. Hmm... I'll be in DC next week. Anyone know the hotel/conference center that I should be spending my evenings at?
  9. I'd rather sink or swim with Mejia or some other young pitcher than tendering Santiago. I don't have a problem tendering him if the FO is confident he can be traded (and I do think he has some value), but I don't want to see him in a Twins uniform next season.
  10. exactly. I don't think I send Dozier out without two of De Leon, Urias, and Alvaraz. That's me personally. If we have to pick up Puig and possibly send a lower tier prospect like Stewart over for it, by all means. But at a centerpiece, no way.
  11. MLB caught up to him two years ago and he hasn't adjusted. You're right in that he's not abysmal (roughly a .750 OPS the last two seasons), but you add to it that he's got a negative reputation, there's definitely quite a bit of risk. I don't mind Puig in MN as a lotto ticket, but Puig is not what the team needs to be competitive, and getting him instead of what we really need (pitching) isn't worth it. Like I said, I'd take him as a flier, but no way as any center piece.
  12. I think the sentiment is that this would not be enough. Puig is pretty high risk high reward. You don't trade sure things for that. Taking him as a lotto ticket to help LA eat some salary and get rid of a problem is fine, but he's not worth anything on the trade market. De Leon for Dozier is heavily biased to LA. I think we are getting more if those two are in the deal.
  13. TINSTAAPP, right? I disagree with this statement just as much as I do with the poster you were responding to. We have upside in the minors with several guys that could fit that description. Gonsalves in particular definitely has legit number 2 potential. The key is potential, the odds of him reaching it, as well as the time needed to get him there.... and with pitching prospects being as finicky as they are, you need a lot of them. The Twins don't have a lot of them, and some of the best ones are still two years away at minimum. The problem the Twins have right now is that the hitting core is here now. Yeah, the lineup sans Dozier will be hurting, but expecting improvement from Sano, Buxton, Vargas, Rosario, Polanco, Murphy, and Kepler is not unreasonable, and there are backup options available in some cases as well.
  14. Puig would not be of any value. Not against picking him up, but I'm not offering value for him b/c as it stands right now, he carries quite a bit of risk along with a high price. I'm all for picking up a contract like that hoping that the scenery change, and if that is the price needed to get a sexy list of prospects to go with it, I'm certainly game... but as a headliner... absolutely not.
  15. I think Garver starts in AAA, but if Murphy repeats 2016, I think Garver will find himself in the majors pretty quick. Not sure how much more seasoning Garver needs, but I think he's going to be in Minnesota for a long time.
  16. I hate hearing people complaining about the umpiring, particularly around ball and strike calls, and I absolutely hate that certain teams (i.e. Yankees) get an advantage there that no other MLB team gets. Not saying you get rid of the ump (still need calls at the plate, balks, etc.) but I am saying that I think it's time that this gets taken out of the hands of said ump.
  17. I'm really not sold on pitch framing. If as accurate as suggested, Castro is stealing just over a strike a game. That isn't going to make a huge difference. Suzuki/Centeno/et al weren't even losing a strike a game, so the swing is maybe two strikes a game. Don't get me wrong defense and catching hasn't done the Twins rotation any favors, but if those numbers are reasonably accurate, this won't cure the pitching woes. The biggest thing we need to do is go with upside in the rotation, that means no to guys like Santiago and yes to guys like May, Berrios, and Mejia. I would be thrilled if we entered 2017 with a rotation like Deleon or Glasnow (via Dozier trade), Gibson, May, Berrios, and Mejia (or Hughes with someone else in AAA). That leaves Duffey to spend time in AAA as a starter or in the pen if that's preferred. Gonsalves would likely open in AAA with lots of reinforcements in AA. I'd probably go get a few AAAA type arms in case I needed someone in a pinch, knowing depth is a problem in that setup, but I think that makes far more sense than rolling out guys like Santiago.
  18. Wrong on both counts. The problem is the people/system calling balls and strikes. This is something technology could fix, but if that happened, the Yankees would have same strike zone as the Twins... and that would be a travesty.
  19. The hitting core is here now. If we are 3 years out from contending, then Falvey/Levine failed in bringing in that pitching that we need.. and they failed in developing those young starters that we currently have. Personally, I think 2018 is very reasonable for contention. If we're lucky, 2017 will mirror 2015.
  20. A swing of a 134 is 1.3 strikes a game (assuming he catches 100 games). Not sure that's nearly as a big of a deal if that's the case. My two cents: 1) They clearly don't have confidence in Murphy/Turner/Garver. Turner is already a big question mark with the bat as it is. 2) 3 years is likely what they had to pay to get him. I'd have preferred a 1 or 2 year deal as well, but I'm guessing that was the price you pay. 3) There's not much out there for quantifying the value of a catcher defensively. If our staff takes a big 180, that's good evidence that there's something there that the metrics don't catch. I don't hate the signing, though to be clear, I don't love it either. Castro is kind of meh for me. As bad as our defense was there, I'm not going to argue, and I don't see Castro's bat as any worse that Suzuki. If anything, Castro can help Garver in particular on the defensive side of things, which could be very beneficial long term given that Garver will likely be an above average hitter at C.
  21. All this talk about framing makes me wish that baseball automated balls and strikes. I don't know if these metrics are accurate or not, but if being a better framer makes that much of a difference, then baseball really needs to rethink its approach to calling strikes.
  22. At his demotion, he led the starters in WAR... and that was after starting poorly said season. He can certainly profile to be something more than a back end starter. Whether he makes it there, who knows, but you have to give him time to prove he can.
  23. The real question is whether some team decides to ditch starters altogether and go with a 12 man pen, with each reliever expecting to pick up a couple innings a pop. If the roster sizes increase, I wouldn't be shocked if someone tried that at some point... Now that said, May is a starter. That's where he belongs. He shouldn't have been demoted.
